Would love to visit all the mansions, but living in Australia isn't getting me there. Oh well, your tours are the next best thing. Thankyou very much.

Chatsworth, where it is more economical to gild the windows rather than paint them (i.e. the gold will last for 30 - 40 years, they would need to be painted about every 8 years - from a televised tour given by the 11th duke). It's a pity that th Paxton greenhouses are no longer standing at Chatsworth. There are 2 missing homes. Hardwick Hall had to be donated to offset brutal death duties of the duke who died just before the family trust became official. Like all too many city mansions in cities like London, New York, Chicago, etc., Devonshire House was sold to be demolished for new construction.

Amazing Estates and Mansions, it's a wonder how the family retained the wealth and are able to maintain the Mansions, Gardens and Estates 👌

You should a story on the largest stately house,Wentworth Woodhouse with its scandals and oppulent wealth and the downfall of the family and now being given a new lease of life This house screams for a miniseries about it It makes Dowton Abbey looks like 2 bedsit flat compared to its massive size

I would love to see a story about Wentworth Woodhouse! After Kathleen Kennedy Cavendish rebounded from the loss of her young heir to Chatsworth, she pursued the wealthy & much married heir to the Wentworth fortune. That alliance also ended in tragedy…in the hills of south France on a stormy day that was not suitable for flying.

Well with so much diversity already in place, be it ecological, in array, whatever, I still feel that these estates could be much, much further enriched. With so much available space I was trying throughout to mentally calculate an approximation of their capacity to accommodate our new cultural enrichers.

Did I miss mention of Deborah (nee Mitford), Duchess of Devonshire? She was instrumental in putting in place the tourism of Chatworth, and starting the various money flows surrounding that tourism to maintain it. She was the Mitford sister who really did it right. The late duchess really had the aristocratic manner, but was modern in her practicality.

Many years ago I read a romance book based on the life of Bess of Hardwick. Even if only a part of it is true she still was an inspiring woman. A determined woman.

It’s such a tragedy that Kathleen Kennedy’s brief marriage to the heir of Chatsworth ended during WWII, a few months after their wedding. The 2nd son who married a Mitford sister, took over after the death of their father.

So, is Hardwick Hall no longer a Cavendish estate?? I know the 6th Duke redecorated IT as well, responsbile for many of the cut-up tapestries that line the stairway, and the current look of the long hall.

Yes. I visited Chatsworth. Looked for famous Gainsborough portrait of Georgiana. Not on view. Nice lady didn't know what I was talking about. Then there were a number of crap portraits commissioned by the present owners by 2nd rate Scottish artists. Struck a sour note. Best thing to be said is that it's incredibly well-organised thanks to Debo and obviously money-making. Everything A1. But why not tax these privileged inheritors on the capital value of their estates? Simple Act of Parliament. I know. I know. Death duties. Inheritance tax... it's all been tried. The revenue could then be used to improve housing for the masses. This would yield BILLIONS! Nobody really needs to live in anything but one modest house or apartment. Not even Lucy Cavendish.

The estate provides jobs for 1000 people locally in an area where there is not much employment. They support local people in many ways, build affordable housing on brown field sites and provide opportunities for apprentices.the estate is run by a charitable trust and the family derive no income, this is all ploughed back into the trust for the preservation of Chatsworth.
