Simple in game you lose these features: 1) 2.5s autoloader 2) aiming without stupid "siege mode" limiter 3) Very few enemy tanks using higher then a 120mm (aka the armor is good irl)

The tank was designed for defensive operations. Sweden abandoned imperialism after the death of King Gustavus Adolphus. That in mind, shoot from ambush and scoot to the next firing position. The tank would be at a decided disadvantage on the offensive.

The manual for the real thing says "don't do that", though. In fact you are not really supposed to drive it around with the elevation controls unlocked at all - you are allowed to do it to sneak in and out from behind cover, but that's about it. The manual warns that driving around with the elevation controls unlocked risks damaging the hydraulic control system.

@@renhanxue Didn´t see that chapter in the manual, and none of us anyway obeyed it. Maybe that´s why we always had our feet in 2 inches of hydraulic fluid... but since I have kept my manual in mint condition (as every dedicated tanker), perhaps you might guide me to that paragraph?

As I understand it, the key to driving the S-tank effectively is to not be shy with the gas. The throttle pedal has two ranges because it controls two engines; the first 50% brings the piston diesel to full power, and the rest of the travel brings the turbine to full power. Due to the fact that all turbine engines are sluggish in changing power outputs, the standard procedure was to simply stand on the gas pedal and control speed with the brakes.

The S-tank was designed as a defensive tank. It was designed to ambush Soviet tanks preventing them from invading Sweden. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, it kind of lost its role. The S tank was not up to the requirements of NATO-tanks, and it proved too hard to adapt them to be used in different terrain with different tactics. So their service-life was ended. But I still believe they was, and probably still is the best tank for the task of denying invading Soviet Tanks passage thru Sweden.

Yep. Considering swedish doctrines, tactics at the time and the specifics of the terrain it would have been fighting in, the S-tank would probably have done pretty well. Only problem would probably have been the use of conscripts instead of professional soldiers, however, considering that sweden had what? 5-6 million people at the time? A standing, professional army wasn't an option.

ZeroneAngel I am a conscript. And one of the big advantages is that I have aquired many other civilian skills during the past decade, skills I can use in case of war. The conscript army is unpredictable. And I think that is a good thing.

I couldn't agree more. For a small country without the ability to have a standing professional army, the conscript army is outstanding in some cases. Your argument that the use of civilian skills in a war situation is a perfect example. Especially in a defensive war. In an offensive war, not so much. But that is honestly beside the point when we're talking about the swedish defence. If I am correct, Sweden never had any offensive doctrines or strategies. Well, at least not for the last 200 years. Before that it's a different matter. But when it comes to specific tasks in an army, professional soldiers will, for the most part, outperform conscripst. Spec-Ops, boat crews, tank crews and certenly air force. However, I will admit that sweden had a working strategy when it came to design of vehicles and aircraft. The fact that they were designed to be operated, serviced and maintained by quickly trained conscripts whitout specific expertise is awesome.

ZeroneAngel that is correct, but there is an other doctrine that is potentially devestating to an invading force. Decentralization. There is no authority that can order me to surrender. And during basic training we are told we are expected to resist as long as possible. We are also trained to resolve our task, and my commander doesn't care how I resolve it. Same how I am concerned about my soldiers. (I am a squad commander) I don't care about how my orders is carried out, just that my squad resolves our task so our platoon function to resolve our part of our company's part.

ZeroneAngel But an agressive defensive doctrine. In the 70's Sweden was too strong for any power to invade. Sweden is also quite large, (it is bigger than Germany, ) France , Spain and European Russia are bigger and Ukraine about the same.

I've read about the British trials in Germany; they just didn't understand the tank or the doctrine of how to use it. Swedish doctrine was that the first person to see a target engaged it, while the British liked to bounce it of the commander, slowing engagement-time down a lot. There was a slew of other issues too, but it was years since I read the report, but misunderstanding was a keyword.

Quick engagement times were also the strategy this tank was designed for. Its a shoot and scoot tank with the ability to easily ambush an enemy and if deemed necesary run away before the enemy had the chance to engage you. A tactic you find prevalent throughout Swedish military doctrine and a tactic which could be extremely effective seeing as its hand crafted to fit the swedish military and the swedish terrain. We are not an offensive country but rather a defensive one. Being defensive in nature we have no need to equip heavy and contineous strike tactics nor are we stupid enough to expect to hold set points forever against a likely nummerically surperior foe.

I believe it was not better than the centurion for a number of reasons. There is a Swedish article that names a list of problems with the design which led to it being dropped. The main one is that you had to run the engine to aim the cannon which generated a heat signature that other tanks could spot.

@@roosterbooster6238 I think kind of vehicle is intended to be used as more of an easily movable gun emplacement. Which makes sense in the context of Swedish tactics and terrain. Park it somewhere, wait and cause the biggest 'cyka blyat' you could when a T-55 rolled around the corner from the farthest distance possible.

Angry Irishman it was intended to provide mobile fire support to mech infantry but proved ineffective in this role.. If you read Swedish articles they mostly considered it an unsuccessful design / vehicle for a number of reasons. Moreover had the design / concept any merit then it would have been more widely adopted..

What should be mentioned maybe that the idea was to use the trenches glaciers left behind from the iceage behind as cover. With an flat tank that meant pre digged tank trenches, the tank hunkers down, pops up and shoots and hunkers down, and can drive around in cover. So its low height was what made it perfect for that terrain, all technical shortcomings for "normal" terrain did not apply. Normal tanks entering that terrain where at an disatvantage naturally. Most of the swedish vehicles where made with mobility and pretty much hit and run tactics in mind (volvo type c303 tank hunters for example) and not with slugging it out on the open.

Not having a heater is not really a flaw in the design. I lived in Alaska where I imagine it gets as cold as Sweden in the winter and it's a pain in the butt having to take-off a heavy coat when in enter a heated car or having to put it back on when you exit from it. There's also the problem of moisture when you open the hatch when your tank is nicely heated and all that cold air rushes in or the reverse where you close the hatch and the cold air heats up.

Due to the gulf stream, sweden has something of a miraculous climate, despite its northerly position. in southern half of sweden, "winter" winters rarely see temperatures below -10C, occaionally down to -20C during cold snaps. northern sweden can get a bit colder, but nothing extreme. the record is -48C compared to alaskas -62C. the relevant swedish saying is; there is no bad weather, only bad clothing.

@@Merecir Ive heard about that winter. I was in Boden 99-00 in the artillery, so I just missed it. The wind was apparently coming from the southeast as the Baltic was not frosen over, so the windchill effect was combined with extreme humidity near the coast as A8 had a week long fieldpractice that had to be called off because hydralics froze and several personell got frostbite. Apparently temperatures fell about 20 degrees C over night.

Yep, it was the same winter when Gävle got 4-5 meters of snow in one day. I was on a train that almost reached the train station before it derailed because of the compacted snow.

They get the northern tip of the Caribbean Gulfstream sea current, that makes the climate more mild. Not in northern Sweden, but the rest gets it, basically anything close to the North Sea. Alaska by contrast gets the artic gulfstream bringing cold water south, which makes sure that even around Vancouver and Washington you'd be a fool to swim without a wetsuit in mid-summer. Source: My Dutch experience of going "A sea in midsummer! Great! Show these guys how to swim!" and then freeze my balls off as surprised and mildly amused Canadians looked on.

This was an amazing tank and it was a bold move from the Swedish government to put national security at risk on such a novel and unproven concept. I think the idea still has potential for a number of reasons: - Advances in active suspension technology can make gun stabilization possible for this tank. You only need 1-plane stabilization as on the horizontal it's very easy to keep the tank on target manually with a car-like steering wheel; - You can mount larger guns that would be possible with turreted tanks. I think a 155mm wouldn't be much of a problem. - You can still add on top a small automated turret with lighter weapons if necessary; - Lower height and thicker armor than in conventional tanks are still possible; - Additional weapons can be easily mounted coaxially with the main gun; a Bofors 40mm autocannon for instance, to deal with softer targets; - It has the potential to be cheaper than a traditional tank; that's no small thing in today's market where tanks have grown very expensive.

You would not like to add one gram to the weight of the 103. Your ideas are interesting, but they would immediately end up with a 80-ton monster that couldn´t swim, and would get stuck everywhere. The armor of the S was very thin, and making it able to resist modern APFSDS would add some 10 tons. A bigger gun, with a not too small magazine, would add another 3-5 tons. New engines to match this would add 2-3 tons. More fuel to retain range would add at least one ton. Sheer size to accommodate new engines, bigger ammo etc would add 10 tons, just by structural members, thin side/top/floor armor, track length and additional road wheels. The 40 mm Bofors with ammo adds an extra 2 tons. And how do you stabilize a gun that is fixed in the hull, in height and traverse? Without doing away with the crucial auto-loader? Easy to maintain horizontal aim you say? Do you know how much 1 degree mean at 3000 m? I think you are dreaming, and very far from being attached to the reality. The Swedish designers in the 50´s were thinking outside the box, but they had common sense when it came to simple engineering - which you lack. They also had a list of goals to fulfill with the project, and they ticked them all. Sadly other countries didn´t have the same list, so it was no export success.

As someone who doesn't know a great deal about tanks and judging by the pictures of these things in dug outs on tree lines they must of been extremely hard to spot, even with negligible heat signature tucked away behind a self made berm. So very much an ambush tank. Fascinating machine!

Looks like a great solution to the Swedish situation with heavily forested, rolling terrain in the defense.. One of these can control an avenue of approach like a boss and then disappear to the next position.

I was thinking that the S tank design would make an excellent solution to a modern airborne firepower vehicle. You would have to reduce the weight to 20 to 25 tons, up the horsepower, use modern equipment add a small turret with a 20 or 30mm gun with a missile mount and a seperate remote machine gun mount. I would like to see a 120mm gun tube but would settle for the 105 due to ammo stowage considerations. Obviousely the machine has limitations but it could be airdropable and would provide armored infantry support big guns where there arent any now. The requirement would be largely defensive holding an objective until relieved...

I hope you will experience that sound IRL yourself. And hear the "clonck" when the gear is engaged, the increasing RPM and whining sound from the GT as the accelerator and brake are pressed simultaneously, and see the jump the tank makes when the brakes are released. If lucky, you might even see a full "clutch-and-brake" maneuver, going from full speed ahead, turn and go the other way in about 1 second. Or, but that is just a dream, see a "target catch" - going full speed ahead, the commander sports a target at 4 o´clock, locks his cupola, turns the tank, returns control to the driver/gunner and 8 seconds after detection three rounds have hit the target - and the commander has been looking for other targets the past 5-6 seconds, knowing that this threat is no more. That is a challenge even for Abrams/Leo II/Leclerc.

If it were to be redesigned, it would probably be more like the T-14 than the original Strv 103. There were a lot of tradeoffs made to accommodate the hull mount.

@@AlexKall well yeah, this tank was never ment to do so, it was a counter to a potential invansion. it would dig in and wait, but due to drones and other recon ordinance it is obsolete. but back in the day, for what its purpuse was , it was pretty great. this video may have been missleading. this tank was purly defensive/ambush. whilst he often compares it to the turreted counterparts. turreted tanks are usally better in every way, tank destroyers in general are just cheaper sience one doesnt need to spend money on turrets.

@@TheBurnknight my response was made in regards to updating the electronics, it would still not be viable or rather effective to fire on the move even if you redo all the electronics and drive control as the tank is physically not made for shoot on the move. Which was not a problem because of tactics and the fact that no other tank at the time could effectively fire on the move until its later years. But if it was to be updated and used till now it would not be usable because of doctrine of our armed forces and enemy forces, also the protection is lacking today and would not stand today's round if hit, even on the steep angle slanted front.

This is a beautiful tank ,it is as convenient and effective as a Volvo....i bet it was very hard to spot hiding and waiting to surprise the enemy because of low profile .

I believe elevation values were increased for a total range of about 25 degrees in the B or C model. 11 down, 14 up. Technically the early models had a two-mode _transfer case_ with high and low range; the transmission was on the piston engine and I think it was a three speed. The turboshaft had no transmission per se. Due to the nature of an automatic transmission's viscous coupling and a turboshaft's free power turbine, torque multiplication was roughly similar for both engine outputs to the transfer case. Later models I think had a similar arrangement other than the transfer case was an actual 3 speed transmission, removing the need to stop and change to low-range for rough terrain.

I have studied and designed military armor and armored vehicles some years ago, and always like the whole story rendered on various armored vehicles you guys put out. Having said that, I am just in awe of many of the technological innovations in the Swedish S Tanks. I also realize the Swede's never had to actually go to war in one of these combat vehicles.Good thing.... But as I am looking at designing and producing a new novel combat vehicle in a few years, this thing has many features worth borrowing. Having said that, there is no way in Hades that anyone in their right mind would incorporate the fixed gun feature. That is like dating a drop dead gorgeous girl that is clinically insane. Great many positive attributes, but might kill you unexpectedly.

You looked like you were having a bit of fun. I always thought the concept of the S tank odd but interesting. I can see where a modified or evolved version could still have a place in the swedish toe. I liked the ribs on the front and think they should be explored on the Abrams. Including the track skirts. Reactive under the ribs? The risks there being shrapnel hitting blue on blue. As for the actual S tank, the only thing I would have done differently, overall length. I would have add 12 to 18 inches in length to the crew compartment. I think it would improve comfort and efficiency. I wonder if the loader could be mounted in a low profile turret. Turret handles traverse and the hydraulics elevation. Keep the crew in the hull, but provide turret access to the rear driver. This would allow basic service without dismount. The gun could be rigidly mounted or some stabilization to allow firing at.low speed under good conditions. I like the dual drivers. I had an idea for a fire support vehicle with dual gunner drivers. The vehicle being wheeled, one engine front and rear. in front of the engine, small turret, mounting either a Vulcan or a mini gun. Guns would be controlled remotely by either driver or the the commander. The crew would be seated together in the center using remote optics.

Per the manuals, you aren't supposed to drive around at speed with the elevation gear on, the forces are likely to break it.

Great rundown of a very strange, but neat tank. A fighting vehicle only the Swedes could manage. Strikes me that if used in defensive ops, by well trained crews it could be very effective.

You showed how the AA machine gun was aimed, but how was the hull mounted machine guns aimed? Or were they directly linked to the hull aiming similar to the main gun? It looks like it at least has elevation capabilities and could have a little side to side depending on the mechanics. On a side note, it wasn't so much discontinued due to drawbacks. It was discontinued due to economic feasibility since it was so specialized to Sweden's terrain and needs that nobody else was interested in buying it. Interestingly enough, its design now kind of lives on in the Merkava.

The hull MGs are fixed. And as they are located far to the left it is a bit awkward when you aim the gun at the target and then switch to the MGs and the fire ends up about a meter to the left of the target.

probaly my favorite tank next to the jaghttiger defensif tank great in ambuch fast yup even the dessin is stil one of my most love tank dessin it was far ahead of his time i think that why other country dit not know how to use it i his best options . i think it would have made somme big difrence during a batle as a sniper tank to cover the main tanks on field .. but this i my point a vieuw of course

I´m not sure you actually would like to. It is much worse than any other drug - once you done it, you´ll keep on wanting to do it again. And since the opportunities are becoming scarce, you will end up with severe addiction problems.

The tune brings back memories from the old videos. Now when its gone I miss it. When the tune starts in the beginning of the video I get to the relaxing "inside the chieftains hatch"-mood. Its hard to get to it nowadays.
