Back in 70s and even into the 80s sights like that was still common on older hunting rifles and 200y was the nominal range. Scoped rifles were uncommon, fragile and expensive back then, unless hunting in rocky mountains or the prairies where you can see for miles. In military 1980s we shot iron sights FN FALS to 300yards. A few times a year everyone shot to 400y to find candidates for 500 and 600y. That's using figure 11, a 4 foot tall man shaped target "named" Herman. Later ranges got changed to 500 metres with a few still to 600m = 656y. I recall some had longer ranges like cfb borden 1k range but those aren't for iron sights.

The first time I had to shoot something other than a .22 in competition was a Remington .308 bolt action that didn't have long range sights on it and I wasn't allowed to use a scope - I did enough to make 5th place and took home a cash prize of $100 - I gave my godfather his rifle back and suggested he put adjustable sights on it which he did and tapped it for a scope

Is it weird the gangs figured out medium-caliber semi-auto carbines were the way to go before every Army on Earth did?

"John Q field soldier" had figured that out, but ordinance and desk jockey bean counters don't listen to the guys using it normally. Many nations had small arms development under the artillery umbrella for design. So long-range, big boom, big heavy bullets were what they knew and wanted. An example was the volley sights on rifles to mass fire at a thousand(s) yards.

Anyone else think that Ian's impersonation of Dillinger sounded more like what Dillinger's grandmother might have sounded like? 🤣

Dam, that intro wanted me to give all my money to Ian! Well played, sir! 😁😁😁

Dillinger's Lebman conversion 1911 was apparently in .38 Super, but the gang definitely used 1911A1s in .45 ACP, so it's not really an anachronism, aside from the Tisas part.

Like you said in the breakdown video for the rifle it has to be because he was converting them to full auto that he put the muzzle brake and foregrip on them
