The reason the helical gears is more silent then spur gears is that it has more teeth engaged at the time on the meshing gear. If you don't go with a helical piniongear the sound will still be loud since this gear is the one with the highest amount of revolution. I belive that if you install a helical pinon you will get the sound you are looking for.
@wrenchtheroo6557 Жыл бұрын
Actually its less surface. It engages from one end to the other as a straight cut its the full width of the teeth

Nice video! BTW, I have counted the teeth on SHS gears and found out that "100:200" has a ratio of 23.8:1 while "100:300" has 26.4:1. SHS 100:200 Pinion 10, Bevel 30/10, Spur 45/21, Sector 37 => 23.8:1 SHS 100:300 Pinion 10, Bevel 30/9, Spur 45/21, Sector 37 => 26.4:1

Wanted to add a couple supplementary comments on using helical gears. The more technical reason they are theoretically quieter is because torque is distributed gradually between the teeth as they engage, and also because the angled profile pushes the gears apart axially into the bushings/bearings, removing slop. I say theoretically because the higher ratio results in more gear and motor movement, which ultimately plays a bigger role in noise you hear. The main upside I find is their durability. The teeth are generally thicker by design, and in my experience wear more evenly. The higher ratio also requires less torque from the motor, which is good for your batteries. The downsides are they are harder to install, and need a more specific setup. I have found they work best with a faster or mid speed motor and active braking mosfet. It would be interesting to see lower ratio options for helical gears in the future.

Another note. 100:300 I believe is 26:1 ratio, not 36:1. The only difference in the 100:300 and 100:200 is a 9 or 10 tooth bevel gear, at least for the shs sets. For anyone interested in getting a set at this time you can get new shs sets at Airsoft Atlanta for $14 or $15

this vid helped a lot with the basics. I do have a question tho that hasnt been adressed: Could you explain the Gear Ratio given by the manufacturer? Usually we work with 13:1 - 20:1 which is simple to understand, 20 rotations of the bevel gear turn into 1 rotation of the sector gear. Gear Ratios with helicals are denominated 100:200 or 100:300. I don't get that. How do you arrive at the 24:1 and 36:1 and how does the calculation work? I know these questions are delving into detail but your help would be appreciated. thank you!

I was curious if you could make a High torque build with 32:1 gears, High torque motor, half tooth piston with roughly 400 fps m4 or mp5 because I'm so interested on seeing what you could do with that, I really appreciate what you do and don't push yourself too hard in these tough times :)
@democracy20053 жыл бұрын
400 fps is nothing with 32:1 gears, you can even make it up to 550 fps

@@zacktrever1878 nope, trigger reponse is better with lower ratio gears like dsg or 12:1 ssg with high torque motor

I'm not entirely sure what advantage the helical gears can provide for airsoft other than quieter operation. Also I've never seen tappered roller bearings or thrust bearings being widely available in airsoft sizes to work with these helical gears. The added axial load would make the gear train less efficient.

Thanks for the great video! Could you share some thoughts on what would be your ideal/what you usually go for in DMR builds? I'm studying and looking to build an extremely silent and consistent DMR, so any knowledge would really be helpful!

@silvergoldengun27473 жыл бұрын
hello! good video thx. does it render the gearbox more silent?
@ViniColen3 жыл бұрын
Teoricaly, this is the stronger gear that is possible to put in an AEG, right? (the 100:300) . So, teoricaly, in your opinion, what is the stronger spring this gear can push without break itself? Of course, we are considering an high quality piston.
@mikemegadeth41103 жыл бұрын
So when shimming bearings should I account for the slight movement that the bearings move when I push on the gear when checking the shimming? I've heard bushing are .1mm and bearings is .3mm. So is that .1mm both bearings move and .1mm of movement of the gears axel inside the middle hole?

What's the point of ball bearings instead of bushings inside aegs? isn't the springs and the motor going to defeat the purpose of them since aegs are not designed for long continuous rotations Usually, everything that uses ball bearings has a goal of reducing friction to improve speed and efficiency (skateboards will roll further, fans can run more efficiently, ect)
@Fernando-ry5qt4 жыл бұрын
If you fire in full auto the system works non-stop for a lot of cycles, the reduced friction is considerable
@oooppiikkk4 жыл бұрын
@@Fernando-ry5qt I would think once the first tooth of the piston touches the gear there would be no difference between the bushing and bearing right? so that small degree of rotation to reset the gears for another pull would be the only time it would come in handy, but even that its at the mercy of how soon the piston can reset.
@Fernando-ry5qt4 жыл бұрын
@@oooppiikkk The motor works with the system as a whole, every bit of resistance costs you time and battery, you can't neglect the friction during spring compression, there is always friction on the gear's axles while the system is engaged, being the spring engaged or not. Ball bearing have a lower friction for the axles at the cost of a more fragile piece, they also usually keep lubrication for more time, making them almost always better in low/mid powered applications.
