Kokoweef Mine and the Lost River of Gold Legend! We do NOT disturb these incredible caverns. I only work old tailings collecting 120lbs of Cave Onyx (Calcite & Aragonite) flowstone, popcorn stalactites, and stalagmites which make beautiful mineral displays and jewelry. This site also contains millions of prehistoric fossilized bones. I've been there. Went there about 50 years ago with a friend and met the owner of the mine. He was nice enough to let us tour it. The reason we went was because we had read about this legend in a treasure hunter's magazine, and thought it would be cool to see it. I think the legend was just the owner promoting it for his own aims, because surely if there had been a river of black sand gold, it would have been found by now.

I agree, there was a lot of that back then and this is likely mostly legend. This site however does produce some gold, and there is a public record of one large gold sale to the US Mint. I know that for a fact. That being said I only visit to collect the cave onyx from the tailings for making jewelry. I have no interest in metal mining. Best wishes!

I was in there in the 70's my father worked that mine I was allowed to explore with one of the miners
