That car is near and dear to me. It was the first and last car I bought new and it lasted 21 years - it was a tank! Regular maintenance is all it ever got and it just kept going strong. It was sitting in front of my house when someone crashed into it so that was the end of my baby. Since then, whenever I'd see one on the road (not many) I'd take a long look and if I saw one in a parking lot, I'd take a walk around it. Good to see you fixing it instead of dumping it.
@LithiumSolar Жыл бұрын
Damn, that's terrible - especially when it's someone else's fault that destroys your property. Hopefully nobody was hurt. And yeah, I'm certainly NOT dumping it!! The plan is to evaluate how well it's running post-rebuild then get a few estimates to have it repainted to the same OEM white. It's going to look like brand new inside and out by the time I'm done with it :)

That's awesome! It is a great car even though definitely not considered a classic by any measure. Please keep showing it off. Mine was blue(ish) silver ... it could be dirty but the dirt didn't show. Inside, mine was a dumpster because of our 3 dogs ... we took them everywhere and they were medium sized dogs to the interior took a beating but exterior and engine were superb so I kept the car. Funny thing was that I thought it would be bad luck to get rid of it. @@LithiumSolar

@@WillProwse I didn't capacity test mine. I assume you have a video coming so I'll check back on the results you got. Besides, the engine part is the more interesting part of the video anyway. I'm tired of looking at 12V 100Ah batteries. I never seem to get the "fun" ones you do like with giant globs of solder. I mean... that's a good thing of course but still, they make for more interesting videos LOL.
@bobcole3852 Жыл бұрын
Wow, hadn't heard about the engine until now. I must have missed a video or two. Good luck with that project. I'm surprised it needed to be done at that mileage and assume you will use synthetic oil when you finish and get at least another 250k miles out of it. I have thought about using 12v batteries but believe it's better to use a 48v one in a 48v system instead of 4 12v. You have done some great reviews in the past and you and Will have been my go to sources for the best, most complete and accurate information. Thanks for what you do!
@LithiumSolar Жыл бұрын
I mentioned it at the end of the last video. I bought it used around 100k miles. I don't know how the previous owner took care of it, but it was bought from a dealer not just a random dude sale. The piston design flaw is well documented online though and was fixed in later versions of the engine. I think my lack of experience the first time I went through this around 160k was the reason it didn't last as long as I would have liked. It sure will this time! I fully agree that it's better to buy a 48V battery than get 4x 12V and wire them in series. The same goes for 24V. It works but it's just not optimal. And thank you :)

You are doing yourself an injustice if you dont have that block hot tanked while it is out of the car and bare! Awesome videos as always, and we all love watching the battery/electronics videos, I would like to see some of you doing the restoration on the car too! Keep up the great work!

I wish I could, but it's just not in the budget unfortunately. I checked a few local machine shops and professional cleaning/honing started around $500 and went up fast. Maybe if it was a sports car...

This was the first year the Corollas got timing chains with the new 1ZZ engine. Having a chain makes them much easier to work on than timing belts :)

Another good vid! Interesting to hear about the 1ZZ. I was going to buy 4 LiTime 100A mini's but they barraged me so badly with ads, that I got sick of them and went with Power Queen instead.
@LithiumSolar Жыл бұрын
I don't blame you. Their advertising has been rather intrusive and even called them out on it in my Black Friday video. I think they're trying to get people to impulse buy out of fear of missing out. I'm not a fan of that business model.

Great video, battery and engine. I have 4 LiTime 12v 200AHR with 200Amp Bms. 2 are in series 24v on a Xantrex 3Kwatt inverter as a home power source with 3K watt of solar through a Flex Max 80 controller. The other 2 are used at a off grid cabin, 2Kw Eaton 12v inverter to power lights and a small freezer set up with a temperature controller to run as a fridge. They are charged with an 80 Amp charger and a 2kw inverter generator when they need to be recharged. The batteries are light enough that I can bring them home to recharge. I have had no problems wit the 2 batteries in series keeping them balanced. Very impressed with LiTime and the price keeps dropping. Great reviews and information.

@@LithiumSolarI have since looked on the DIY solar forum and I am not impressed by what I saw. I is good to see each cell, bit I question the quality I saw on one battery. I saw Will breaker one open and I thought he liked what he saw for the price. But any company can change things at any time. I do not recall the brand, but one choice was a clear case. Maybe that is what we should demand from battery assemblers? Would make for an easier battery review than this last one. With a clear case there could be plugs that could be removed to check each cell's voltage. Just a thought. If someone added another battery in parallel they might never know if they had a weak cell. Thanks for the reviews and I am glad you have a hobby you like. We need more people that can rebuild an engine. I hope your videos will inspire a lot of people. We are going to need a lot of skilled people.

Good day. After fully charging my battery, the voltage drops to 13V in 2 days, and to 12.90V in 5 days. But when the battery is connected to 200W for 1 minute, the voltage is 13.39V and it stays like that all day? Is this normal or not a battery problem.

The cam bearing surfaces could be polished on a lathe with long thin belt sander. It's a pretty quick job, but if they still feel smooth it's not a big deal. Most importantly, you can't have and scratches or wear that are not evenly radial around the surface, if there is, that will allow oil flow out of the hearing surface too easily. The cam caps and bearing surface in the head could be very lightly polished as well.
@LithiumSolar Жыл бұрын
They all feel smooth except for that one spot on the cam that has a scratch mark and I can just barely feel with my finger nail. Interestingly, there is no corresponding scratch on the bearing cap. I guess the key to polishing is not removing too much material? Not sure I'm ready to attempt that LOL.
@Donn29 Жыл бұрын
@@LithiumSolar it's a super quick job at a machine shop. Might cost $50 or $100, but it's very simple and hard to mess up. I have experience with the 5M and 7M motors and the 7Ms are the same setup, but those cams have a Babbitt layer that gets worn thin and looks like the cams are junk, but if you polish them, they are perfect and at the high end of the allowable oil clearance. I would get those polished. If it was a car that wasn't worth anything and could be scrapped at any moment, slap it together, if you are keeping it, probably get a machine shop to grind and re setup all the valves, but at least take that scoring out.

Have 4 of their 12v 100ah batteries that acts as an extra battery for my Delta Pro.. So pretty much low power energy storage.. All 4 of my batteries are way out of balance and the BMS will go in to cell overvoltage around 13.9v or so on each.. I'm slowly working on them to get them balanced back up.. AOLithium server rack is catching my eye right now.. Hear you may have a review on the way... :)

If your piston rings line up after you aligned them correctly, your piston bore might be out-of-round. Also if ring gaps were too large, that could cause them to move. Toyota used piston rings that they described as "low friction" that might also have a tendency for the rings to creep. If this engine used them, perhaps aftermarket rings would be a better choice. Check these videos out Measuring Cylinder Bore Diameter, Out of Round, and Taper DIY CYLINDER BORE CHECK: How to measure OUT OF ROUND, TAPER, and REBORE size
@LithiumSolar Жыл бұрын
The gap for No1 ring is 0.25-0.35mm per the Toyota manual. Mine were around 0.40mm. I realize tolerances are super tight with engines - think that extra 0.05mm would prevent them from seating properly? I put Mahle's in, seems to be a premium replacement choice. Will check out the videos tonight, thanks for the infos! :)
