The real world of Japan's Royals.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We’re all obsessed with every outfit Kate Middleton wears and how Meghan Markle is adjusting to royal life...but have you ever heard of the drama behind Japan’s royal family. Not to mention their friendship with our favorite royals? That’s right, the two royal families have long standing ties. But there is also a darker side of the Japanese Monarchy that has shocked the world and we’re going to share it all here. The Imperial House of Japan runs things quite differently and with the abdication of the Emperor Akishino coming soon, more is about to change. The throne will be taken by his successor, who must be a male. Which may be the reason why Princess Mako of Akishino and Princess Ayako are marrying commoners and leaving the royal life. The older Princess Masako of Akishino, has barely been seen for years and went from vivacious to practically a “broken butterfly” as the people call her...but why? Watch TheTalko video to see the secrets inside the lives of Japan’s Royal Family.

The narrator is giving a cross cultural comparison. She is not confusing a Chinese folktale for being a Japanese one. The Japanese princess would give up her prestige and honour for a simple life just like how Mulan gave up hers to return home to her father. The narrator also compared another princess to the British princess Diana and I see no one raises an eyebrow to that comparison.

@TruthSeeker I don't know what you mean by "technically". Japan is officially an empire, and nothing else. And king and emperor are two different things. While there were emperors who were also kings, like the Holy Roman Emperors, or the British monarchs starting from Victoria up to George VI, they are still two distinct titles, with emperor being considered higher than king, at least in theory.
@davidfreeman3083
@davidfreeman3083 4 жыл бұрын
@@Saruman38 That's exactly why ppl say the emperor is technically a king. Actually in Chinese translation the royal and imperial especially in modern usage is pretty much interchangeable. For example everything that starts with 'royal' is translated into 'imperial' almost at all times, however their titles are still 'kings' and 'queens'. Furthermore, royal, king, queen are almost exclusive for monarch, while 'imperial' as an adjective as other meanings. For example, 'imperialism' doesn't imply supporting to have an emperor of any kind, while 'royalism' almost exclusively means promoting a monarchy.

But too many things are kept secret, way more than in the British royal family, so that would be very hard without having to make up most of the events. Plus we perfectly know how Americans represent Japan: they would hire Chinese actresses and change the traditional costumes and hairstyles to make them look like clowns like they did in Memoirs of a Geisha...

Liberalism VS conservatism is not 'culture'. Especially when you talk about big 'culture' like East VS West, or even just regarding a major country like Japan, the level of conservatism vs liberalism, level of social diversity, equality and inclusion, and level of democracy and freedom should be completely independent from the so called 'culture difference'. It's NOT a 'cultural difference' (as they're not 'equal', and I believe that cultures are 'different but equal') when it comes down to, for example how much a society diverges on standards regarding the same issue (such as marriage, family responsibility and career and professionalism) for men and women, or other things such as how much freedom individual should have.

I read somewhere a while ago that Princess Masako, a Harvard grad and fluent in 5 languages, had some type of breakdown years ago. Unable to conceive and rounds of invetro therapy she was only able to produce a girl. This prompted pressure on the family and her sister-in-law eventually gave birth to a boy who now is the hereditary prince, leaving her daughter Aiko in the rubble. Aiko also had to drop out of school due to relentless bullying (apparently a huge problem in Japan). Masako turned down her husbands proposals several times and only accepted with conditions. She should have read the fine print and darted when she had the chance. Wonder if she'll emerge after she is the queen consort. She appears brilliant and needs to step up and be a positive role model to the world.

Thoughts from someone who has lived in Japan for a number of years, speaks Japanese and has done a lot of research on Japanese history and the Imperial Family: 1) it is Emperor Meiji and not Emperor Meihi. 2) Calling Princess Mako a “little monarch” is incorrect. Emperor Akihito is the Monarch of Japan. Therefore you would just call her “a member of the imperial family. 3) Japan’s government needs to update the law on succession for woman. Japan has had female monarchs and some of the greatest monarchs in history have been women. 4) not only that, they need to allow women to marry outside the family and still keep their title. I just don’t see any harm in that. Good example of this is royal families of Europe. 5) the Imperial family needs to adapt with the modern society of Japan. I would love to see like a Twitter and/or Instagram account for the Imperial family so the people of Japan can become closer to them and see the achievements and the good that they do for their country.
@loslopez6997
@loslopez6997 5 жыл бұрын
In Japan tradition is a huge thing and it’s very unlikely that the government would do such thing since the Japanese people are not so open to the idea, besides in the European royal families there are up to a hundred possibilities of succession and that’s a problem for the Japanese since the emperor is for them Japan and allowing to extend the succession list would mean that the single dynasty in Japan would die out because of a lot of non royal blood
@juliettelimz9965
@juliettelimz9965 5 жыл бұрын
Although I agree with your points I can see an European bias in your views. It feels like your suggestions are heavily based on how European monarchies work. I think the key thing to remember here is that the Japanese culture and their people’s mentality is quite different to that of European countries, so while for example the twitter thing might be nice in the UK, it would seem very scandalous and too much in Japan (in my opinion as a Japanese person). I still think for us the imperial family has a bit of an almost spiritual level to it, hence the distance between them and the common people, and I don’t think Japanese people really mind that, on the contrary.

I'll make a fan fiction about, The Japanese Royal Family, and it's called, The Finger Snapped Kanabo. It's about the trials of hierarchy and the succession Japan needed, based around a daughter, and her relationship with her father. A lot of the succession to the throne, revolves around the voice. Male voices travel further and can be heard clearly. The women usually tell the male what to say, and then they go edit it to make it clear. Like Māori culture.

Watched this after just coming home from Bangkok, where I witnessed the coronation of the new King of Thailand, along with several other rituals in Sanam Luang, such as the Royal Ploughing Ceremony. I also took part in the cremation ceremony for the late King Bhumibol in October 2017. I am an American who has lived 5 years in Thailand (in Chiang Mai) and spent most of my adult life in Asia. Therefore, I have a bit of a different perspective from those who compare the Japanese customs with those of the West. It would be far more appropriate to compare the Japanese customs with those of other Asian countries such as Thailand and Cambodia. Even in the bowing and the women's dress there are similarities, and also, Japan is a Buddhist country, like those nations. The main difference is that Thailand and Cambodia were sort of colonies of various South Indian empires in ancient times, so their dress, decorations, and royal traditions reflect this influence, of the ideas of DEVA KING and DHARMA KING, whereas Japan has no such influence from India. I don't know to what degree their customs are similar or dissimilar from those of the royal traditions in China and Taiwan. As far as the degree of traditionalism, I would say that the Bangkok and Cambodian rituals are a lot more traditional and elaborate as far as decorations, royal objects, and dress (especially for males). However, in Thailand, females have always played a significant role in the Royal Family, and the Queen and Princesses are given great respect and admiration by the people. I don't know specifically about the Cambodian Royal Family, but I know it's true in their culture generally also about females...everywhere in Southeast Asia, as opposed to East or South Asia...Malaysia, Philippines, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, etc. Even in South India, it was the same in ancient times, until their culture was taken over by European Dutch and Portuguese colonists and later by North India.

The Talko really should be ashamed of itself for the lack of research they did to put this video together. Many of the "outdated" practices such as Royal princesses must leave their title once they marry a "commoner" and the emperor being unable to abdicate were all part of the post WWII constitution drafted by the victorious allies a.k.a. Americans. Just wiki Japanese imperial history and you'll find it was actually a common practice for emperor's to retire and pass the torch once they reach retirement age. The retired emperors still retain some power and their own court. There were some instances where there were 3 living emperors at the same time. Of course that led to wars when competing emperor factions happened, but that's not the topic. If it seems strange that such a long running dynasty only have 3 male heirs and 8 princesses, it's because also during the constitution drafted post WWII, they limited the line that can claim the throne and many imperial lines were left out. It's not that the monarchy can change by themselves either. All of it requires Japan to change their constitution. Japan actually seriously thought about allowing Princess Mako to inherit. That was until the youngest prince was born and then all discussion ended. In order to abdicate, the Japanese parliament had to do a special amendment for the current emperor to abdicate. It's one time thing so not a permanent change.

Hmmm? You need to understand culture and tradition that kept the japanese nation great. Westerner need to understand that we asian love our tradition and respect it.

Sometimes you need to change things. The Russian Imperial Family had kept to tradition and that's what ended their monarchy. They couldn't adapt to a femal heir (they had four girls and a sick boy), they had trouble accept a peoples court(the duma) and in the end the people revolted and they were killed. They should keep some traditions and end other traditions. They shouldnt make the same mistake the Russian Imperial Family had.

It’s important to end the tradition that keeps women and others from expressing their selves and growing in our career and lives. Tradition can be great if it is fair. Plus I don’t think they want to be killed because of some of their pointless and sexist rules.

When it comes to the Japanese Royal Family i commonly think of Emperors MEIJI, TAISHO, AND HIROHITO... BUT DAMN TALKO! GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT AND PLUS, IF YOU ALL THINK THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY IS THE MOST POPULAR, STOP SAYING THAT.... AT THE LEAST, JAPANESE MONARCHY IS RICH IN HISTORY FOR AS THE BRITISH ONLY HAD A MONARCHY 1000 YEARS AGO! GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT! EVEN I AM A FILIPINO BUT I KNOW THE FACTS! MAKE SURE THAT YOU RESEARCH ON THIS TYPE OF TOPICS BEFORE WCTUALLY CREATING VIDEOS ABOUT THIS! GOD! THE ONLY REASON WHY BRITISH MONARCHY IS SO POPULAR IS BECAUSE OF THEIR WEDDINGS AND THE POPULARITY OF ELIZABETH II,CHARLES, HARRY, CATHERINE AND MEGHAN!
