The new bridge will be just like the Sunshine Skyway bridge in Tampa. It won’t have the beautiful views like the Skyway bridge, but it will be a much better bridge. This bridge was named after Francis Scott Key because the British ship he was on was located in this location when Fort McHenry was being bombarded and where he came up with the lyrics for the National Anthem.

The Gordie Howe bridge is 1.5 miles long, including the half mile center span. With the center span construction completed, the Gordie Howe bridge is now officially a border crossing with customs of both countries on site, (currently screening bridge employees & officials). Note, with the Gordie Howe bridge, NO structural supports are in the water to interfere with (or vulnerable to) shipping vessel traffic. Gordie Howe bridge is also six lanes wide (plus shoulders), plus a dedicated bicycle/pedestrian lane. The Gordie Howe bridge project cost $6.4 billion (CAD), up from the original $5.7 billion (CAD) estimated prior to the COVID pandemic. The Gordie Howe's bridge support towers stand 720 ft high, and their footings are about 725 ft deep. The bridge is designed to last for about 125 years, becoming the longest cable stayed bridge in North America. Expecting to be open in September 2025, construction began in 2018. Tolls will be paid on the Canadian side, since Canada is footing the bill for the entire bridge project, which include both ports of entry, approaches to the bridge from the ports, and ramps to their respective ports from either I-75 or 401 highways. However, bicyclists & pedestrians may cross toll-free, but don't forget your proper ID or passport.

Would tunnel be an option here ?
@jnvivian5 ай бұрын
Hazardous cargo is not permitted to go through tunnels probably because crashes with hazardous cargo in tunnels would be much more dangerous to clean up than similar crashes on bridges, making bridges necessary for those kinds of loads. Some hazardous loads could also damage a tunnel like explosives, while a bridge would be able to avoid much of that damage should an explosive load detonate. Tunnels therefore cannot replace bridges for all loads that need to be transported, so bridges are still necessary.

it would cost about $220 mill to build a tunnel between the span where the FSK Bridge is ( give or take ) , this is taking into consideration that it costs $30 mill per mile in chicago by the Boreing Company - to replace the bridge is about 2 billion dollars, they claimed $1.7 to 1.9 but we all know costs will over run... we are going to replace the bridge, reason for this is Hazzard Trucks, cannot go in a tunnel, BUT, if a Tunnel and a Bridge were built, you would have a backup so that the whole system is not completely shut down for years or months and would be a drop in the bucket to add to the system, so for the next 3 to 4 years this area will be under construction... if there was a tunnel, a code variance with a Manned 24/7 fire station at either end could have used a tunnel in the short term and act as a backup

I want to know why the bridge was able to be struck by the ship. Such a critical structure continually subject to dangerous traffic should have had more substantial protection from a predictable disaster.

It’s hard to not be a “theorist” with this one. Out of all the things I’ve witnessed and dealt, this left me speechless more than anything. I’m sorry this just doesn’t happen. All the bridges in the northeast are built poorly, compared to the ones in Charleston, outside of Savannah, and the one in Tampa. It’s difficult to explain if you haven’t seen the bridges in Baltimore/Philadelphia etc, compared to other areas of the country.

The only actual solution I can see is to tunnel under the shipping channel, so that there is no bridge there in the first place. Like the bridge-tunnels in the Norfolk, VA, USA area. My solution would be a tunnel as on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and I-664 Bridge-Tunnel. No bridge over the shipping channel that can be hit by ships or bombed during war. The I-695 approach tunnel portal causeways are already in place, for the original design of a 6,200 foot long tunnel.
