@@giagarex at the time, my main goal was to only break down conversations. Wanted to demonstrate what power moves looked like through characters, so I focused on the isolated scenes and convos. This was a while ago though, had enough time to rewatch the full show now, and remembered many details I once missed.

When Walt goes to Gus's house for dinner, there are childrens toys strewn about, and Gus makes a passing reference to having children. But when Jesse goes, the toys are gone and there is no further mention of a larger family. It's because there never were any kids. Gus was just pretending in order to appeal to Walt as a family man, which he knew was his justification for cooking meth.

The ribbon was about the plane crash. But it serves the same function as you expressed. It plays as a facade of empathy to establish connection on a subconscious level. That common ground, and perhaps unknowingly using Walt's guilt for the plane issue, allowed Gus to work himself into persuading him. The jealousy ploy wouldn't have worked if Gus hadn't already established the respect and empathy as a baseline in the skirmish phase of the manipulation campaign.
