It’s not a navy base, it’s the US Naval Academy. A four year college where the cadets get a college degree. After graduating they must serve as an officer in the navy or marine corps. Their education is free and they actually get a monthly salary while attending.

Just as West Point is a military academy/college. Graduating army officers. These programs are extremely difficult to get in, only the best of the best.
@acetone738a Жыл бұрын
It is technically a navy base. Just as West Point is an army base. The ‘kids’ that attend (using ‘kids’ as they are 18-21ish) are in the military. I while education is technically free they have to commit 4(?) years to that branch. I may be wrong on the number of years though. Once they graduate they are fully commissioned officers and often are given priority on promotions because they attended an acadmey. And yes only the best of the best get in. You have to have I believe your senator and maybe your representative to recommend you. You can also go through the process to have the VP of the US to recommend. It’s extremely difficult to attend but by all means it’s 100000% worth it if you get accepted. They often spend entire careers with that branch (talking 20-30 years sometimes)
@Big_Tex Жыл бұрын
The commitment is actually 8 years, at least 5 active (and they can then go reserves for the last 3). Students need a “nomination” to be considered, and the nomination can come from Congressmen, Senators, (and under certain specific criteria) the President and Vice President. That’s the easy part, that amounts to thousands of nominations per year per academy, and maybe only 20% of those nominees are accepted (“appointed”). An entering class is maybe 1200 students (not sure exactly nowadays).

@@Big_Tex i figured my memory wasn’t 100% accurate but in the ballpark on stuff. I was looking at going to Naval Academy to swim but quickly realized I was better suited to a DII school so I didn’t do full research. Still wish I had tried but I know my grades would have disqualified me. I barley had a 2.0gpa and you need close to a 4.0 to get in and to ace the SAT and ACT tests (at the time anyways)

@@acetone738a I could’ve used your skills, because we’d have PE every semester and you could literally flunk out on one of the PE tests. One semester it was swimming. Annapolis is the Naval/Marine Academy -- it is a 4 year University that you have to enter the Navy/Marines to go to it. You get a 4 year degree when you graduate and you become an officer. It is very prestigious and very difficult to get into. If you graduate from there, it looks very good on your resume.

Plus all the military academy’s are different then traditional university. In the academy’s the student body gets paid. I believe something like $200 a month first year with increases for the four years.
@Big_Tex Жыл бұрын
@@MrGlenspace I don’t know the amounts today but in the 80s we were paid gross about $500 a month. BUT there were a lot of deductions, because not everything is free. Tuition and housing is free but not books, supplies, uniforms, computers, food etc. So you show up day one and you’re issued a big loan that you spend 4 years deducting from pay. Not complaining, but net pay is a lot less than the gross salary, though net pay it was set up to increase each year.

I just hope this is ALL privately financed and not paid for by tax payers. I understand that they would surely justify it by saying its an important recruitment tool (for the military not for these sports teams), but the Army/Navy game should be a purely for-fun game between the two military branches and not some big business venture like major college athletics. Presumably the Ron Terwillager Center was financed by the real estate magnate of the same name.

I went to USNA in the 80s, graduated a year after David Robinson. Can’t say I knew him but he borrowed masking tape from me once, and one time I stepped out of the elevator on his floor and he nearly ran me down on his skate board. Very athletic guy. The Naval Academy campus is, I guess technically you could call it a base but the sole purpose of it is to house the Academy, so basically it’s just a college campus located in the Capital of Maryland. (Midshipmen call it “The Yard”, that’s how I think of it.) It’s a lovely campus; I visited the Army’s West Point once and the place just seemed gray and depressing. But USNA is beautiful, located on the Chesapeake Bay, all blue and gold and copper domes oxidized to green. Of course I might be biased. Haven’t been back there in many years. I’ve been around UK and my analogy is, West Point reminds me of Oxford - impressive buildings but gray and depressing. Naval Academy reminds me of Cambridge - bright and lively and colorful. Again I might’ve been influenced by the weather on those respective visits but that’s how I’ve long seen it.

Annapolis is not a Navy Base, it is a university. It is the college for Navy and Marine officers. The Air Force Academy and West Point is the Army Academy. You can only get in these schools through congressional appointment or scholarship
@Big_Tex Жыл бұрын
Congressmen “nominate” candidates but getting accepted is called “appointment”. The academy does the appointing. Only a fraction of nominees are appointed. So you need a nomination, but you’re still not in unless appointed. There are no scholarships because tuition and housing is free (in that sense everyone has a scholarship), and as government employees the cadets/Midshipmen receive a monthly salary.

Annapolis is actually a Naval Base. The Academy itself is only a part of the entire Naval Base, though it takes up the vast majority of the space. The naval base is situated at the mouth of the Severn River where it empties into the Chesapeake Bay. The Naval Base itself sits on both sides of the Severn, with the main Academy ground situated on the southern side of the river.

The Army-Navy rivalry is very intense. The two schools play against each other in 25 different sports each school year. The football game is the most famous match-up. It is the final game of the regular season for college football. No other games take place on that day. Both schools recruit from essentially the same pool of athletes that are qualified to be appointed to an academy, so many/most of the sports are evenly matched which makes it all the more intense. When you’re a freshman at the Naval Academy, every time your turn a corner in the barracks/dormitory you have to say either “go navy sir” or “beat army sir”. It’s taken very seriously.

Navy needs to change the system or theyll never compete. Stop forcing recruits to serve in the military would be a start. I dont even know why they play. They get crushed by people who want to pursue the pros. If you want to pursue a career in the armed forces, you probably aren't as good at football as someone who wants to pursue a career in football. I support the troops, but the way they run sports is so dumb.
@Big_Tex Жыл бұрын
Is this satire? The reason taxpayers fund the Naval Academy is to produce Navy and Marine officers, and promote a core of knowledge and professionalism in the sea services. Sports is just a sideshow. Taxpayers would not be happy if the mission were corrupted just to recruit illiterate future NFL players who don’t serve in the military to pay back that investment.
@chroniccomplainer3792 Жыл бұрын
@@Big_Tex sports programs are for profit. But its hard to profit with such a shitty product. They cant even throw the football. Its just embarrassing. Makes our service men look weak. No missions will be corrupted by recruiting a decent team. There are plenty of schools that hold recruits to a higher standard, Michigan and Stanford to name a few, and still have success. But if you are forced into a miserable job and get a shitty education, its impossible to get good players. If you aren't gonna get good players then shut it down. Compete for real or stop.
