Great video! Thank you very much. In general, everything looks good. although some things could be improved. Firstly, the current-carrying bars at a glance have a rather small cross section, they will heat up and transfer heat to the cells. passive balancer? he will only do worse here, as an option at least active.

Dear Jo, i see this give out (3.2v X 5) = 16v @ (3500mAh X 2) = 7000mAh the OEM is (as a block) 14.4v @ 6500mAh and has better cooling since metal is better at conducting heat compered to NexCell that is staked up lithium in a plastic case. Mr. Jack say his battery is 2.6 times more powerful than OEM.. how is that possible.?? the numbers don't add up. i am not so convinced. can you please shed some light and in-light us with your knowledge and experience.. thank you very much for a great video, and thank you Jack for making Prius good again.

According to my tests here i would say a 30 to 35% more powerfull than the OEM batteries which is of course impressive...
@bensonak47
@bensonak47 Жыл бұрын
On their website they are claiming 2.6 times more power using the "peak power" capable of each battery. 260 amp peak for the lithium and 100 amp peak for the OEM battery. 260/100 = 2.6. But in my opinion this doesn't mean anything but marketing because the battery will only output as much current as the vehicle calls for. If the OEM battery maxes out at 100 amp, the car will never draw more than 100 amp. I suppose the only benefits would be about 7.7% more capacity per "block", 7000mah vs 6500mah. The lighter weight, and more charge cycles? Although, to be honest I thought these cells would be much larger and not small cells as shown in the video stacked together with questionable quality control and overall design. I had these on my radar for when my OEM battery goes bad, but after this video I will stay with OEM.

To me the biggest benefit is that LIPO4 batteries don't self discharge like NiMH. How long can you leave your NiMH powered car parked without starting? The other big benefit is longevity. LIPO4 batteries are usually rated at 4000 recharge cycles. Looking up NiMH, I see 1000 recharge cycles at best.

Jose, Excellent video. I really enjoy your lectures and learning a lot. Recently I did the EV Only Button mod on my Gen 2 Prius. Now the stage is set to use the EV mode for my short trips around town, but it looks like this is the battery that would make that possible. I never go over 35 in town anyway. But I was interested in Jack's comments that the battery could take a strong current to charge with no problem. I have an HV charger but it only puts out 300 mA. What can I use to grid charge this battery to make it into my daily EV around town with no ICE except maybe once every few weeks for a longer drive to maintain the ICE?

Very Good Video :) inside/outside of the housing look real clean an the internals well thought out, in noticing the disassembling the outa neg terminal wasnt fully sealed (A) on further viewing the yellow wire ware pintched against the neighbouring link where the blue wire resides on those pairing cells (poly type) (B) also the P(b)MS with the load resistors along the thin circuit board. (A) would this cause heat displacement where the resistance an tolerance put unwanted stress on the adjoining cell (B) the pintched insulation on the yellow wire from the neighbouring link cause disruption an cause that cell or the apousing cell to fail (C) with the resistors running beside each other on a unfilm circuit board where no heat sink neither is applied would cause uncharatricalistic nature in the resistors due to resistance and tolerance variations due to heat or distorted volatge irregularity. regards Dave.

I have bought these cells to replace my old ones and I have not felt that they were cheap. The OEM are plastic and metal and that metal is feels rather thin. I would say that Toyota's engineering of early Prius is substandard. Just the fact that they manufacture a car whose batteries would die after a few weeks without driving is indicative of idiot engineering. They should had at least provided a trickle charger that could be plugged in to maintain the batteries. These replacement batteries are LIPO4 and don't have that self discharge problem. You can leave your car for a year and unless there is some parasitic drain, the batteries will be fine when you get back to it.

Aside from some balance circuits I don’t see any special circuitry or computer interactive bms or anything. Just some lifepo4 pouches with balance leads? I mean a BMS really isn’t required since the Prius has a built in high and low cut off and active cooling. What’s to stop me from using much larger and cheaper prismatic cells and building my own custom pack? Pretty sure I could cram 10 maybe 12 kWh or more in the boot.

@@hybridsolutiondiagnostics just asking, I see loads of forum posts but not a lot when it comes to actual specifics like balancing, bms etc. LTO looks like a better fit with higher current capability, temperature range and it falls better in line with NIMH. I’m kind of a dumby, I can copy but most of these vehicles are way over my head. I’d like to squeeze a plug in hybrid out of my gen 2 though. A robust vehicle, I live in a rural area, all electric is unreliable but a plug in with a very efficient gas engine back up sounds perfect. Even more so the gen 2 lacks modern network integration and all the other bs I don’t want.

I ordered modules for my old Prius and he responded to my email questions within 24 hours. My impression was that the modules are the same and what changes with a kit for a specific car is the number of modules and instructions. Hi Jose, nice video showing the internals of the Nexcell blades, but I am not convinced with the build quality of this product. The bus-bars are not sufficiently thick to carry the current required by the system. There is no proper cooling or heat dissipation for the cells! I know that you provide a good service to your customers, but you will take a serious draw back selling this product which won't last . . . I have also learnt a lot from you Jose by sharing your knowledge, but please keep away from this product as you may own a bad reputation with it. The Toyota NiMH modules are 6S1P in configuration, since this drop in solution replaces two original modules with one Nexcell module which is 5S2P of LiFePo4 which kind of matches the voltage profile. Thus 12S1P NiMH cells are replaced by 5S2P LiFePo4 cells. Well while Jack deserves a lot of credit for bringing this solution to the market, which consists of replacing the cell chemistry NiMH with LiFePo4 or Lithium Iron Phosphate, by a drop in replacement of two Toyota modules with one Nexcell module, he does not address the fact that the car has no notion of the new cell chemistry in the battery. NiMH with respect to Lithium Iron Phosphate chemistry have different charge and discharge profile in terms: -> Maximum peak charge and discharge currents as well as for how long -> Maximum sustainable charge and discharge currents without deteriorating the battery health/longevity The guys making the Nexcell Lithium battery are not telling you the whole truth. These cells build quality is questionable, can it really handle the high amperage current it claims when you look at them. For sure they did a good job of replacing the chemistry of the NiMH with LiFePo4 and adding cell balancing, but there is more to that, what they don't mention anywhere is the software of the Toyota Hybrid system is not touched. The car has no notion it has a bigger battery in terms of capacity (Ah) and there is no way that it will make better mileage for what it what it was calibrated for! Its good as a battery replacement, but too many customers are complaining about the Nexcell cells failing. Wished the product was better well designed or else there would not have been so many revisions, they should have done it right the first time . . . They are taking 2 Toyota modules of NiMH {known as a block in Toyota jargon} and replacing it by one Nexcell blade, from 12S to 5S, they should be given some credit for that. Have a look at one the video where the Nexcell is being fixed kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHOmZmmdaKhjb8k by its creator. Its like a teardown.

They are part of the Lithium family. It's actually in the technical name that you wrote. So they are Lithium just not Lithium Ion. In my opinion, it is better chemistry for this purpose. Yes, less energy density but as a trade off you get safety as it will not spontaneously burst into flames like Tesla and much more life. Lithium ion is rated at about 500 recharge cycles vs 4000 for LIPO4.

Wow soldered batteries in series with over 100a current passing thru A tiny passive 400ma balancer wich is useless when the car will push over 300v in full regen going downhill If one cell is dead like in that case (I assume not even 1 year old) the rest of the cells will receive a lot more voltage wich will terminate them a lot faster and that applies to discharging as well That is a big failure module/battery no offence and I personally wouldn't have it in my car

I see no strategy at all for minimizing the spread of a over-temp event that occurs in one "blade". Nexcell designed 6 pockets in its injected molded case, but that's it. The thin molded walls between these pockets are the only things that prevent flame spread. I might have chosen to skip the clever diamond pattern on the external faces of the blade that mimics what Toyota did and instead insert a sheet metal flame barrier between the blades.
