McSorley's Old Ale House is the oldest Irish pub in America and the most legendary bar in NYC. The 165-year-old watering hole is steeped in history, as seen through the countless old photos and artifacts covering every inch of its hallowed walls. Here, the current owners explain what makes McSorley's the most storied Irish bar in the country.

...I LOVE this joint...it's one if the few things I miss from the NYC Metro/NJ area since moving to Florida in 1979...I first went there ca. 1977 on a wintry Saturday afternoon - while I was in that mecca of military, modeling, armor, aviation and civilian transportation books & magazines, the late Bill Dean's "Sky Books', on E 52nd street - a fellow modeler/painter from the NJMMA (North Jersey Military Miniature Associates) asked me for a ride home to Jersey City - said that he'd pay for drinks at McSorley's - I didn't drink anything at the time - especially if I was driving, but I told him I'd get him home - and took him up on the offer to visit a new (to me) place...WOW WHATTA joint!!! the dust looked like it had been there since the place opened in 1854...it didn't matter if you didn't know anyone - everyone, friends/strangers (but not for long) sat at a round table set on top of a beer barrel...the deal was that each person paid for a round for the entire table - forget if that went clockwise or counter so...there was a plate of crackers, slices raw onions and HOT (read Colman's) mustard..dunno if I'd eat onions if I was trying to impress a babe - but they were GOOD - and the sandwiches you ordered from the kitchen were HUGE!!! Thoroughly enjoyed myself and wouldda stayed longer but he needed to get back...I made plans to get back as soon as I could...The memorabilia - and the layers of dust in that place is seriously impressive - at the time they didn't have a 'ladie's room' but the guys would stand guard outside the door of the one john. Up until 1972 McSorley's was the one place a man could go and hide from an angry - or pissed off wife - where she couldn't follow him with rolling pin - or sharp tongue- but after the court's ruling the owners said = Fine...but we ain't building a separate john - if you ladies wanna be here ya gotta use the same john as the rest of us....I've been back a few ti,me - prolly three - since I moved to Florida - hard to really enjoy the place though, when you can't drink the ale because you're diving

Still amuses me that 1854 is portrayed as super old in the US. Probably because the country is young but basically everything that is older than 100 years is super old over there. In Europe we have pubs that are over a thousand years old.

The only thing that bugs me upon further research is that their beers are brewed by Pabst Brewing Company now in LA, which not only means that it’s not regional, but that the beers themselves are probably Pabst recipes that they contract brew for many establishments claiming to have their own house beer when in reality it’s the same batch in pubs nationwide. Kind of cheap and tacky for somewhere proud of its authenticity, but helps explain the decent price.
@emintey
@emintey 4 жыл бұрын
"the beers themselves are probably Pabst recipes that they contract brew for many establishments claiming..." Assumptions like this are very dangerous. The fact is that you don't know if this is not McSorley's own recipe produced by Pabst, and you then proceed to call McSorely's cheap and tacky for it. I think you need to retract your statement because you simply don't know what you are talking about until you can make an authoritative statement, according to at least one website it is in fact McSorely's own recipe.
@Hawksandlagers
@Hawksandlagers 4 жыл бұрын
Edwin Mintey well for one thing their history talks proudly of when they used “New York City water” which I’m sure they don’t use anymore brewing in Los Angeles. And it is definitely likely the recipe is from McSorleys but there is still plenty of changes it would go through to be brewed macro. Also I’ve met multiple brewers even at craft breweries that get contracted to help get a place started and in these cases they bring in their own recipes, in one case a man had been apart of at least 12 breweries and mentioned how all these places still use his recipes and all the beers have different names, kind of off topic but just showing similarities in the beer world. I’m just saying it’s not a bad thing, it makes economical sense for them. I don’t think the assumption is very dangerous because I don’t think people go to McSorleys for great beer, they go there for a great time, and when you’re having a great time beer goes down easy!

When I was going to university back in the mid 1990's we used to go to a pub called O'Rielly's and O'Tooles. It was run by an alcoholic Irishman who had recently got out of prison. It was my favourite place to go drinking. One time his liquor license was suspended for serving after hours and he had to close for two weeks. When he reopened he needed cash (i.e. he needed his customers to drink lots). I ordered fish and chips and then my friends and I got down to doing our best to make him some money. A couple of pints in and he confronts the table next to us because they weren't drinking enough. A fist fight ensued and it dawned on me that nobody was in the kitchen looking after my fish and chips (he ran the place by himself). I got up and ran into the kitchen and pulled both the fish and the chips out of the deep fryer before they were too overcooked. When I got back to my table he had just finished kicking them out and then he headed to the kitchen. My supper arrived shortly after and he never seemed to notice that someone had gone into the kitchen and saved the fish and chips. It was things like this that made the place so good. Ken

For me a reason to go there! The most boring thing about Irish bars and pubs abroad is they all have Guiness or Kilkenny.

First time I went I was underage, sat outside like a poor little puppy dog while my friends went in for a beer. Years later after coming back from Iraq I finally got to quench my thirst. Stepped up to the bar and looked around for what beer they had. I had not idea, so I said to the bartender can you give two such and such name brand beers. The girl next to me just started laughing her arse off. I looked at her like she was crazy, of course I was the crazy one. And she told me how it works, that you order a light or dark and one means two. LOL! Great freakin' time!

You have to go here for a beer while you're in newyork. Not many bars in the world that have history like this one. The food and beer are great to.👍🇮🇪

"not many bars in the world" have you visit the average European pub? Lots of them are way older than this one. I'm not hating btw

At night it can be interesting. Only bar i've seen throw people out for not drinking enough. Years ago anyway, you didn't really have to "order" beers... they just kept coming until you left. If you stopped drinking for too long, they'd kick you out for taking up space while there's a line outside.

This bar was my first stop off the train when I got into New York after college, I was on my way further upstate. But my father had insisted I do a bit of a route through some of his favorite spots in NYC, he grew up in Staten Island. I walked into McSorley's after a long train from florida. It took me no time to find it, it was as if my feet were moving on their own. I sat down at the bar and put my bag down, and the bartender was there standing in front of me, a smile from his last interaction still lingering.. "I'll have a guiness, my father insisted" The barkeep laughed, "a good ol boy eh!? ", I was completely disarmed. It was like irish ancestral roots were emanating from my body and filling with comfort, that space has old energy. I can remember every moment of that day, magical tavern.
