Paisley was once one of the wealthiest places in the UK, at one point almost 90% of all the thread used in the world, was made in paisley. It’s wealth came from textile industry (there’s a famous pattern named after paisley). Just goes to show what happens when you take an industry a whole town relies on away!

I think its more the case that the people who owned the thread making industry were wealthy, but the general population lived in poverty.

Just an FYI for those watching who might not get this from the video, Paisley isn't Glasgow. It's the largest town in Scotland. You also wouldn't call the centre of town a "scheme". It's normally the roughest housing estates within towns or cities that are called schemes.

It’s a hundred percent not a scheme, has some of the nicest architecture you’ll see but the bampots calling it a scheme, hanging around drinking in the middle of the day think everywhere they go is a scheme. The Scottish couple with them should have have them the context that this is not what 98% of the people in that street are like.

I grew up in a middle class town to the north of london and honestly a lot of people were cold, insincere and judgemental. In contrary all I ever hear about people who grew up in estates is that they were like a big family with a community, everyone knows each other and helps each other out. Something I never experienced in the town I grew up in. Community isn't something money can buy!

A few days ago there was an ITN news report on YT about British families with primary school age children, and with working parents, that were living in hotel rooms, that were arranged by local councils (there's tens of thousands of families living like this) and one family were even living in a tent in Stoke. All because of the lack of housing in their areas, and high rents now. So it is enraging to see good quality family houses., with gardens, like those in that 'scheme' all boarded up and being left to rot.

This is one thing I’m strongly opposed to with English culture. In most countries housing is treat as a basic human right. But, driven by our corrupt government, in U.K. housing is treat as a business. This is disgusting and astronomical English house prices reflect the damage that’s been done through this approach. My daughter went stelth camping with her pal and pitched a tent on top of the roof of a 18th century church, they used a flat section of the roof covered in lead to get a comfortable spot, unfortunately they didn't realize that this church was still in use and got the fright of their lives when the bells began ringing very early the next morning. They had been using what they thought was a disused chimney pot as a toilet, unfortunately this chimney connected to the ministers changing room and they discovered a fireplace full of human solid waste inside the church. My daughter and hers pal had some explaining to do when the security arrived!

When I use the word "exotic", what I basically mean is the stereotypical british architecture were the houses mostly are made of bricks, wich is very different from the wooden houses wich I'm used to here in Norway, at the same time, we don't have those type of castles on this side of the North Sea either. Even Danish and Swedish architecture can come of as exotic to me. Despite similar landscapes and climatic conditions, despite the fact that countries can be located so geographically close to each other, yet having such different styles of architecture, that's what I find fascinating.

If you’re going to visit somewhere do your research beforehand and if you have tour guides try and make sure they actually know the area. Making assumptions of a place and its people is never a wise idea. Also Tennents is a lager not a beer, if your guides had even known Glasgow they could have shown you the brewery which is a 10 minute walk from the centre. It has nice exhibits like long swords during early centuries' kingdoms, armor wear for war, various kilts of clans, paintings, treasures, etc. Then went on tour to the Highlands, saw Loch Lomond; Three Sisters (mountain ranges) where Bond's film Skyfall was shot; Glencoe, went on cruise from Urquhart Castle to Lochness; Fort Williams, etc. Love Glasgow ❤

I feel if you go to these places with good intention and actually get talking to people then you'll be fine, obviously always have your wits about you and take in the surroundings because being around people on drugs/drink situations can take a turn. I went to both places last year too and 100% agree wit you, the people seem so lovely and the places look amazing. For comparison, take a train into London and see how atrocious it is! When I visited both, I looked into houses and couldn't believe the amazing value compared to South England! Honestly for anyone house hunting in future and from anywhere near London, definitely check out Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales - You'll be pleasantly shocked at what you can afford!

Scheme, Housing scheme. That's what that means, they tend to be rough areas but that's not what it means. "Why are the windows boarded up, did something happen here" Yes poverty and kids not going to schools happened there. They send the worst offenders away from the Glasgow area into "overspill towns" Like the one near me, it doesn't change the people, they just do the same sorts of things in the nicer area they get moved too and those places end up all boarded up.

The flats & houses are boarded up to stop people going in, ripping out the pipe work & selling it to the scrappy, that’s what you’d now call a metal recycler. These empty properties are usually scheduled for demolition and new housing being put up. The scheme you’re in on Saracen Street is Possilpark, or ‘Pocil’. A ‘scheme’ is traditionally council house area in Scotland, they call them ‘estates’ when the houses are owner occupied, or ‘bought’ houses. You weren’t in a scheme in Paisley, you were in town, or up the toon. If you wanted to see a scheme in Paisley you’d have gone to somewhere like Ferguslie Park.

I was using the phonetic Pocil, like pencil, not Poss ill, to try to demonstrate to non Weegies how a Glaswegian might pronounce it. I recognise all the ways Glaswegians might refer to the scheme, I was more focussed on explaining how it sounded if you heard a Glaswegian like me say it, rather than the spelling of it, which can end up being misread as Poss ill and or Poss O.

the boarded up windows are the council forcing people out of their homes, when the council house become empty instead of rehousing people they leave them empty in order to bring the prices down for home owner who then get their home compulsory purchased with a price that they cannot afford to rebye anywhere as they bought their original council house cheaply, new houses are built but of course the people from the area cant afford them and very few are for rent

Possilpark isn't in Glasgow city centre, it's a couple of miles out from the centre (shouldn't you have people from Glasgow showing you around who know their stuff? They even said they hardly ever come into the city and usually it's the centre!). And you only really see how rough 'Posso' is when it's at night! Used to live there. Dodgy, yes, but never had any bother, thankfully. I could tell that estate in Paisley (which is not in Glasgow) was scheduled for demolition, just by looking around at the boarded up windows everywhere (is it really 'rough' if hardly anyone lives there?!). Usually you get one or two brave residents hanging on to eke the most amount of money out of the council (home owners). As others are saying, 'scheme' doesn't have negative connotations, unless you're being judgey. It just means a council housing estate - typically away from the city centre and somewhat isolated from the rest of the city (at least, Easterhouse was originally like this, and debatably this caused a lot of the social issues there, and in schemes like it). The Police used to call Paisley "Crazy K" which maybe speaks for its reputation (different areas in and around Glasgow were split into alphabetical letters - they probably still are). If we're talking rough, some honourable mentions for me would be (at least, going by previous knowledge of these areas): Haghill, Blackhill, Milton, Easterhouse.

The metal shutters are put in by the council to protect the houses and the windows. The first area looks like Gallowhill. It used to be a lovely place, my mum was born there. Paisley was a lovely city, the Abbey is really nice. Paisleys town centre died a death when they built all the out of town shopping centres, like Braehead. I can remember going shopping there when I was young with my aunt and it was always buzzing and a nice place to go out. The windy place was the Rest and Be Thankful. Lots of history there and a brilliant burger van right at the top!! Jim Clark used to race the hill climb up the rest.

The biggest difference between the English drinkers and then the Scottish & Irish drinkers is the BANTER. You will never get that in England. The English banter is... what do you do for work, what did you get up to today, did you watch the game last night and then it's all dull football talk for 4hrs whereas the Scots & Irish will talk about everything else that's interesting with banter and jokes thrown in every sentence or other. @@CreatorOfWhites Nice? LMAO where can I get a draw of what you've been smoking? 🤣Within the first 30 seconds of looking at Penrhys on Google Streetview, I could see tinned up houses. Just imagine a place like Barrafield or Blackhull in the middle of nowhere and there ye huv Penrhys.
