Inside the Ships: The Battleship Mikasa

We are very pleased to bring you the first “Inside the Ships” episode, a future sister series to the commonly known “Inside the Tanks”.
The last part of “Wargaming Asia” series brings a tour & a review of the pre-dreadnought battleship Mikasa - the only pre-dreadnought, an ancestor to the Katori-class, still in existence.
This 15,000-ton beast was the flagship of Admiral Togo. To best illustrate you the rich history of this sleeping battleship we had teamed up with our Tokyo colleague: Tadamasa Miyanaga, our Military Advisor for Japan.

Such a legendary ship. I wish WW2 ships could have been preserved and serve as museum ships instead of unceremoniously being sunk in a nuclear weapons test or sold for scrap after the war.

The Hungry Wolf 足柄 It is sad, but the US was pretty damn determined to utterly destroy the Japanese navy. The attack on Kure was supposed to be the revenge for Pearl Harbor. I'm guessing the other reason for using Nagato during Operation Crossroads was to destroy the IJN flagship, the remaining symbol of Japanese naval power. But the other reality of keeping ships and tanks around in museums is the large cost and maintenance required to keep them from falling apart. As important as Mikasa is it still has pealing paint all over, it looks like a fair amount of the ship is totally sectioned off (and probably un-maintained) and that's for a ship which isn't even in the water. It takes an army to keep them for combat and a slightly smaller army to keep together.

While in the US navy, I was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan (was there for 2 years). The Mikasa's museum is right next door to the naval base where i was at. We went over there many times; she's a great ship to visit. Thanks for this video.

We berthed at the US base in Yokosuka in 76; so was lucky enough to have a look at Mikasa. Last pre Dreadnought battleship left in the world. Great that it has been preserved.

Days after the end of the Russo-Japanese War, Mikasa's magazine accidentally exploded and sank the ship. She was salvaged and her repairs took over two years to complete. Afterwards, the ship served as a coast-defence ship during World War I and supported Japanese forces during the Siberian Intervention in the Russian Civil War. After 1922, Mikasa was decommissioned in accordance with the Washington Naval Treaty and preserved as a museum ship at Yokosuka. She was badly neglected during the post-World War II Occupation of Japan and required extensive refurbishing in the late 1950s. Nice! Always wanted to have a look at this iconic ship, there is a LOT more than meets the eye with this epic pre-dreadnought! BUT, the Japanese historian, as a lot of Wargamings history sources at this stage, got some very vital facts quite a bit off the mark. For instance, 118 Japanese sailors died in the whole battle of Tsushima (where the Japanese lost a few torpedo boats only), not just aboard the Mikasa. In the battle itself, Mikasa was not hit as much as one might believe. Only days after the end of the Russo-Japanese war, a fire erupted aboard the ship and a magazine explosion occured which blew away a lot of the superstructure, and actually killed quite a lot more sailors than she ever lost in both the battle of the Yellow Sea AND the battle of Tsushima. It was a powerful enough explosion that the ship sunk, after which she was raised, refitted and recommisioned at the Sasebo Naval Arsenal, mainly as a coastal defense ship during WW1 but she also partook in the Japanese intervention during the Russian civil war, then she was shortly relegated as a training vessel, then decommisioned. During the Washington Treaty just after her decommision, all parties present agreed to the Japanese request that the Mikasa ought to be a memorial ship, this is mostly how we see her today with the exception of a few minor differences: After WW2 her guns were removed and she was left to deterioate, then the Japan Times (newspaper) and none other than Admiral Nimitz himself paved the way for her restoration, replica guns were fitted, and crew from the USS Nimitz herself actually repainted her. ^A lot more than meets the eye, a lot more!

US Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz knew a terrible sight of Mikasa after WW2 and made a USMC sentry stand in front of her, and such as donating, did preservation activity. Thank you very much, Mr.Nimitz. And I wish for development of future's Japanese-American relation.

SpitzMezame I love how MacArthur made the Japanese strip Mikasa of her guns. She was a ship that was 40 years obsolete when the war was over. The Japanese would not have tried to sail her into battle. She would have been sunk before she got a single shot off. It is also MacArthur we have to thank for Japanese whaling. He got them whaling for food after the war so they could get back on their feet. they haven't stopped yet! (BTW, I hate Whale Wars, or should I call it Whale Whores)

Although,back in World War 2,she participating in one major naval battle.The Battle Of Tsushima,which is one part of the Russo-Japanese War in the beginning of the 21st century.And also,the part that the ships magazine on the main turret explodes.And had been sunk to the bottom of the sea.But couple of days,Mikasa had been raised and tow back to Japan for repair her main turret.She was repair in Yokoshuka,a city that is 20 miles away from Tokyo.

Didn't the Americans demand that everything above the deck be stripped down and removed after World War 2 so that the Mikasa could not be used as a weapon against them? So everything above deck now is a replica? Also how spiteful of the Russians to demand that the Mikasa be scrapped. I estimate that there are around 80-90 ships from WW2 still ‘afloat’ if you count small craft, i.e, PT Boats, mini subs etc. Sadly, outside of the US, you only have the Belfast, a couple of DDs in Canada, and some random gunboats. Of the once mighty French, Italian, and Australian Navy, all I could find is a lone MBT in Malta.

In the UK we have HMS Victory launched 1765. Ironclad HMS Warrior 1862. The cruiser HMS Caroline 1915 HMS Belfast 1938 And the Destroyer HMS Cavalier 1944. The US has about 8 Dreadnoughts. Only Japan has the a Pre-Dreadnought. MIKASA!

Hello Wargaming! thank you for the hard work and the awesome game! As a Japanese BBs fan, I want to ask you this question on this legendary ship: is there any chance of it being buffed ? Topics abound on how it doesn't exactly deliver a solid performance and how it could be buffed without becoming a broken ship. I understand your commitment on satisfying collectors and History fans, but wouldn’t it be a thousand times more glorious if the ship could be more than the inaccurate brawler and a beautiful port ornament it currently is ? You make great premium ships, the Atago and the Murmansk players bear witness to my statement. The Ishizuchi is a speedy anti cruiser sea shark and th Nikolai a great and punchy "tank", even against higher tier opposition. Let's not forget the destroyers: both the Kamikaze and the Gremyashi are very satisfying ships to play. Could the Mikasa get some love too ? Could the Mikasa become the venerable ancestor that shows the BB road, an ancient Treeman, a force to be reckoned with ? Thank you again for your attention, thank you for the good job, keep it up

There are only two ships since Tsushima battle are still alive - Mikasa and Aurora (cruiser) in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. The difference is Mikasa unfortunately immured in concrete, and Aurora is still afloat (as national museum and heritage surely) and is part of the Russian Navy. The after war story of Mikasa wasn’t so bright as japanese guide told us. He didn’t told that after 1945 Mikasa ship was deteriorated under control of the US occupation forces and was almost destroyed and turned into a dance club. Only in 1955 a businessman John Rubin, formerly of Barrow, England, wrote an open letter to the Japan Times about deplorable state of the ship and ashamed people of Japan who shows such a disrespect to their own history, so that was the catalyst for a new restoration campaign, that was done in 1961.

While the USS Olympia is technically a protected cruiser she is also "pre-dreadnought." The Olympia was also built prior to the Mikasa though served after the Mikasa due to ongoing modernization and the needs of WWII.

Whitpusmc I am not giving her up. My point is that she is endangered in her existence. Keeping a ship in one piece is very expensive so the chances aregood that one day noone wants/can pay the repairs that have to be done each year.

Whitpusmc Moving them out of the water doesn't mean they will be safe. A museum close to my position had a about 20 metre boat for ten years. Then they wanted to move her to get a closer look at the rust that was seen at her keel. She snapped in half and they had to scrap her. It was such a nice fire-fighting boat. Died even under theirprotection.

What these two aren't saying is that it only takes an hour to tour the ship. Why? As part of the agreement to keep the Mikasa as a memorial ship at the end of WWII, her engines were removed, her armament bolted down and rendered permanently inoperable, and filled almost entirely with concrete. CONCRETE. Case in point, she was also coated in conrete, which is why the ship has that odd, off-white color. It's not paint, ITS CONCRETE. It's just... disrespectful, to the ship and the crews who served on her.
