I could be convinced that something can be an "apartment" that lacks a kitchen. BUT....I feel like a bathroom - at least a toilet and sink - should be a minimum requirement to legally be an apartment.
@feliciafelicia6826

I agree. But, people in New York City attach status to living in Manhattan, like they have "arrived." So, the landlords can get away with spaces that would be unacceptable elsewhere.

It may be absurd but I would argue this simply a dormitory. Calling it an apartment is a stretch but this is a very common set up in areas like China and Japan with other highly populated areas.

Agree. This was my dorm room😬
@ThereAreNoBlackPpl
@ThereAreNoBlackPpl 2 жыл бұрын
I am highly confident there is a legal requirement, special dormitories have arrangements like these where they don’t have to have a bathroom inside the individual’s personal space, &NYC says that apartments need certain things, last I checked some of these kinds of apartments were being busted up, because people need access to certain facilities, this is likely a rented room with a SHARED bathroom and kitchen area that people mostly don’t use because they don’t want to share with strangers and prefer to stay in their own space, so they make a mini kitchen and more apartment-like in their room, … basically, this is either misleading or illegal.

I am surprised how many people criticize this nice young man. I think he is happy where he is and I hope the best for him. I see there are many different people out there, and I support their choices. There is no such thing as not good enough home. There is just a home and your attitude towards it.
@CMV314

I disagree. For example, say someone lives in a building which is being condemned. Would you say there's no such thing as a not good enough home? Or, if a family of five lived in a one bedroom apartment with one bathroom?

I'm not criticising the young man, who is clearly motivated and making the best of his life, but I absolutely do criticise the landlords and the politicians who allow adult humans to pay exorbitant rents to live in a tiny room with a shared bathroom and call it acceptable.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with presenting how “normal” it is to live in this situation because it is the reality and only option for many. What is wrong in my opinion it is to over glamorize living in spaces like this, the girl seems so campy and happy about everything, he is stating that he missed having dogs, that he lives like that because it is New York City and there’s no other options, she is overly excited over seeing a bathroom he has to share, it is ridiculous. I think there is a lot to learn from videos like this but it is clear that people for the most part live like this due to limited options, not out of pure want.

Well in Asian countries and some European countries they have a lot of apartments that are even smaller than this….so people live in small places and rent out places like this all over the world. It’s nothing new and not unique. I always keep seeing comments of people saying things like they don’t know how landlords can even think of renting something like this….when this is done all over the world and accepted all over the world. I guess people in the US think they are too special or too good to live in small spaces or just don’t pay attention to how other people have to live in other countries. Many of the tiny apartments in Asian countries don’t have their own bathroom or kitchen either….they have to share that. And some Asian rooms they rent out are so small only a mattress fits in and you can’t stand up in it….only sit or lay on the bed…..so this guy actually has it well compared to many people.

@@wombat5252 before making such comment, this is the situation: Wake at 3:30 AM NJ Taxi fare one way to the train is $25, then another $25 going back home. Another almost $10 one-way train fare to grand central. Then another bus on the way rides $3 to my work-4x a week. So do the math. I rather pay $1k apartment that is unfortunately located in NYC, but the best it is just 10 minutes walk. It is not being desperate as you assume; it is what is better, most especially I get more rest. And I specifically mentioned I used to live there for three years.

Idk. They have different building codes although some are def illegal. And the landlords know this. I was born and raised in NYC and any actual NY’er will never live here. We don’t play that and they know that. So they do stuff like this for the transplants because they know they won’t move to the outer boroughs. Disgusting.

I’m always so surprised how anyone who lived in Brooklyn first would choose to move into Manhattan, bc generally speaking the Manhattan apartment would be something quite similar the one in this video…with no living room, communal bathrooms etc. When I first moved to Brooklyn I thought “ok how do I get into Manhattan.” Ten years later and I prefer Brooklyn hands down. The trick is to live a few stops into Manhattan. That’s the sweet spot.

I love tiny spaces. Always have. I grew up in a small home and my room I made into my "tiny apartment". Decorated it like a tiny home. I'm in love with tiny homes, tiny apartments etc. In fact I'm about to move into my truck camper full time next summer. Putting all my belongings into storage and trying out "camper life" like van life but with my truck and camper. Should be awesome. Travel around and see the country. No rent. No mortgage. No electric bill. Etc. Just insurance, gas and maintenance when needed. Thanks for your channel. I love it.

When I last lived in New York these type units were listed as bedrooms and they rented for about what parents used to pay for a 2 bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. This particular unit is not even that but rather a closet converted into a bedroom which is honestly sad. A trip to Lisbon, Barcelona, Rome or Milan would easily clarify what should one should be able to get that hard earned buck in terms of buying a property, access to transportation, entertainment, culture, professional opportunities and safety.

I lived in the Bronx for the first 28 years of my life, and then left NYC. I miss the excitement and the plethora of things to do 365/24/7. When I lived in Georgia, I had bigger bathrooms than his walk-in closet of an apartment. There is definitely enough room to fit a twin size bed lengthwise, if he utilized the wall space more. How can he afford to get space-saving furniture items, after paying an arm and a leg for rent? If I had to live tiny, my air-fryer oven, toaster, microwave oven, electric wok and electric tea kettle are non-negotiable appliances.

@@justkhloevlogging The Bronx is more affordable than Manhattan. Nowadays, people are renting a bedroom in Manhattan for what a studio apartment goes for in the Bronx. I live in Dayton, Ohio, and rent a remodeled 575 sq ft 1 BR apartment for $600.00 monthly. I just started my 3rd year in my place, in a safe neighborhood, and my rent has not gone up one penny since I moved in. Since leaving NY in 1990, I never paid more than $750 per month to live anywhere, including mortgage on a 3 bedroom home I was buying. I don't miss living there, just the variety of things to do. I only miss my family and the few friends I still have there. Most of my friends left years ago, like I did, to get more bang for the buck. I will always love NY, but from a distance.

That's like living in a small van except it has a much higher ceiling. My living room is bigger than his entire place . I remember looking at a fire trap like his place which was a converted house with just 1 little window. Basically there was a single bed jammed in the corner, a little coffee table (1 ft x 1.5 ft) with a 34 cm (12 inch) tv on it (all you could possibly fit), about 1.5 feet down the side of the bed to squeeze past, a small chair then you were in the kitchenette and the only door out of there. It has really thin walls so you could hear your fellow neighbour fart / talk / cough / snore. You then went down a narrow wooden hallway past several other fire traps and around a corner to the shared toilet / shower. I didn't even check out the toilet / shower. I was like, "I'm outta here - How is this legal ?" It was so bad. You'd have to see it to believe it. I'm still undecided if it was better or worse than another place I looked at which required the lights on during the day to see, smelt mouldy / damp in fine weather. These were back in the late 90's / early 2000's before fire codes were really in place. I wouldn't be surprised if the build on both of those properties was done without approval either.
