'Inside The State Rooms Of Windsor Castle With Dan Snow'
Windsor Castle has a legendary connection to the British monarchy: the longest-serving royal palace in the whole of Europe.
Ever since the days of William the Conqueror, the castle has dominated this strategic point on the banks of the River Thames, overlooking west London. Over the next millennium kings and queens would invest lavish amounts in its development.
As a result, today it is one of the most magnificent sites in the British Isles. In this video, curator Kate Heard provides Dan Snow with an exclusive tour of the castle's beautiful state rooms and interior.

I worked at Windsor in 1970 my father was a stonemason We worked most of the summer there replacing gargoyles and damaged stonework on the prince of wales tower Being in a restricted area of the castle I got to see the everyday going’s on of the royal family and on one rainy day as I was getting stone reddy for the hoist the queen came walking with her corgi’s and asked how old I was I traveled all over the roof’s of Windsor There are lots of great stonework hidden up there Anyway just thought I would mention it As I was watching this it brought back memories

Windsor Castle is somewhat legendary in my American family. My uncle Edward, born in 1906, was a guest there for about 6 months in the mid-1920's. He regaled my cousins and me when we were children with stories of the ghosts of Windsor Castle. I have a framed Christmas card to him from the Dean.

Much as George IV has been derided, he certainly was a great art connoisseur and had real artistic vision. Windsor Castle was much dilapidated when he became King and his renovations were its saviour, making the marvelous palace that it is today - and indeed the Queen's favourite residence. Kate, the curator is just the sort of enthusiastic and knowledgeable curator this building deserves.

My 1st visit Oct 2018, on a Tues right before Princess Eugenie's wedding. The castle is much more impressive and grand in person. No photo or video can do it justice. It is a "must see in person" place of historic significance. AND the people that work there are lovely! So helpful and want to answer your questions, plus give little details about the rooms and grounds. Well worth the trip.

One of the grandest and most spectacular residences in the world. This building to me reflects the great history of the British People. The only building I thought was in the league of Windsor was Versailles. However, Versailles has no soul because the monarchy is gone in France. Windsor is a living entity that has no comparison in the world. How blessed we are that through wars and fires Windsor still shines like a beacon.

Well said. Versailles is magnificent but lacks that beating heart - that it is actually lived in and used by the people for whom it was created. For that reason, there is a sadness about Versailles.

I was in Versaille yesterday and was sadly under whelmed. The difference in the upkeep of the Palaces is striking and when there I said to mt friends that the difference is that we still have a Monarchy. People go out of their way to impress the Monarch and Queen Elizabeth had exacting standards and always inspected the State Dining Table before state occasions to ensure it was up to her standards...it shows. Sadly Versailles has bureaucrats and it shows.

Thank you for posting this video. In the 1980s I was privileged to have visited Windsor Castle while on vacation and fell in love with it. It is still, to this day, my favorite place to visit wasn't it for the fact I now live far away. Also, thanks to the camera person for showing all the surroundings. I watched West Minster Abbey earlier and was a tat disappointed that the focus was more on the people's conversation than the splendor, the beauty, and the so many things to see there. Great video. One thing I kept thinking when it was mentioned "before it looked like this..." with the stairs moving, bricked up walls, etc to have artists depictions of what that would have looked it. I kept trying to imagine but the camera moved too quickly to properly freeze a frame and it was all sort of glossed over.

It’s a medieval castle with Georgian embellishments. The castle in its true medieval form was a very austere and oppressive building even with Charles 1st alterations in the mid 17th century. What George IV did was apply a 19th century romantic view towards a medieval castle like they would appear in the great stories and fairytales from across the ages. Real medieval castle life was as I described the building. Oppressive and austere!

When HM is in residence at Windsor Castle would these be the same 'royal apartments' she would occupy? OR is there another set of royal apartments that are even more private than the ones we see (which clearly are open to the public) ?

Wow, this was awesome. No wonder the now-late Queen Elizabeth II loved this place, and was so devastated in her 'Horrible Year' when it caught on fire. She was so devastated to think that such a precious royal castle & it's belongings could be destroyed under her watch. But, her legacy ("Elizabeth the Great", maybe?), it left secure & in tact, better than ever. Well done, to the Queen. Now for King Charles III to keep it in prestine condition. About Henry VIII's armour, I watched a documentary a couple of weeks ago, about how with the increase in weapon technologies, armour had to not only be toughened (& these experts actually worked out the method for themselves of hardening metal, and even how to decorate it in patterns & colours - all for the the richest of wearers). Also, armour stopped being flat against the body, but poking out, to look like a big belly gut. This helped, with hardened metal, to deflect the round bullets away from the body, away from vital organs, and this outer layer (the fat-look) helped to allow a safety space between the body & the outer layer of armour. Even before guns & bullets, bows & arrows turned into deadly crossbows, piercing any basic armour... before the hardening of the armour gave better protection. It was fascinating. I watched the doco twice, just to grasp how fascinating this knight armour had improved, before it was phased out.
