Aussies put the Saladin turret on the M113 chassis as a Fire Support Vehicle, used it in Vietnam. Tamiya made a kit of it.

Must have been a super rare kit, couldn't find the actual kit though you can the variants of the M113 by a simple Wikipedia search. To quote " The initial M113A1 FSVs were fitted with a turret taken from the Army's Alvis Saladin armoured cars. " -Ser_Remseldorf

The M113 fitted with the Saladin turret proved a success. Subsequently, the Australian Army purchased 45 more modern Scorpion turrets to convert further M113 into FSVs. @@WorldOfTanksOfficialChannel

I was a driver and then gunner in in Stalwarts between 1972 to 1974. Really enjoyed the vehicle. One problem was if the hydraulic system failed. You lost steering assistance and brakes. I had a very interesting drive back to base over three hours and had to engage first gear as an emergency brake when a vehicle overtook a parked vehicle in front of me. The silencer on the rear of the vehicle exploded when the engine backfired. According to the vehicle behind me I sent shrapnel all over the village. I was then stopped twice by the police because I was then throwing a severe smoke screen behind me. Funnily enough it was in the workshops for a while after that.

Quality! The Saladin certainly was one of the best armoured cars out there. They should've kept the production line open and carried on updating it. It's a pity Britain went out of the armoured car business.

So glad you got rid of the incessant music from a few years back. Amusingly, whilst the presentation of the inside evokes things like the Tank Museum's own videos, the presentation of the outside really had me thinking Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear. :)

There are not many but you can own and drive them in the USA. At least in Texas. Many states also allow Ferrets and other armour made by different nations. Unless you have the space and the workshop, I'd recommend the Ferret. Smaller and 'slightly' easier to work on. Great fun to drive.

Its a shame he didn't mention the HESH rounds that the short 76 was famous for, and the really clever 4 wheel steering, which gave it a tight turning circle, making it surprisingly agile.
@SuperErikRoss
@SuperErikRoss Жыл бұрын
Ahh i was wondering about that so also had anti tank capability
@johnfarscape
@johnfarscape Жыл бұрын
@SuperErikRoss yep, it had amazing HESH rounds. It was chosen as its primary anti tank round due to its armour penetration not being affected by the relitively low velocity of the short barrel 76, it was an awesome armoured car in general, I loved driving it, although when buttoned down, the vision wasn't great, still perfectly acceptable for its time period though. . Selecting a gear in advance is also a bit odd, I kept trying to find a clutch that it didn't have. . . Wargaming really done this tank a diservice with the atrocious in-game version, almost all british armoured cars were designed to be able to turn around fast, it was the French armoured that had a wider turning circle, but they often had a 2nd driver facing backwards, no idea how WG got everything so backwards.

I did hear that the Saracen, because of the front mounted engine, the driver had to operate the gearbox in 'reverse order' to the Saladin.
@bsquadronguy
@bsquadronguy 3 ай бұрын
Sort of. The difference is, when selecting forward or reverse, the driver has a simple lever which merely changes driving direction. If you want to go forward in a Saracen you pull the lever to the rear, push it forward in a Saladin. The pre selector was the same in both vehicles. I preferred the Saracen as the handle was there when you dropped your hand while you were driving, no fumbling about in an emergency. You have the full range in forward or reverse. I was trained on Saladin/Saracen in 1974 in Cyprus.

Fun thing about the B series engines, they were designed to run on poor quality fuel, to the point where they can (allegedly) run on Polish vodka. But not Russian, the russian stuff isn't good enough to burn. They can also be hand cranked. Yes, I've done it on my ferret, Yes, it's hard work and I wouldn't want to do it if someone was shooting at me.
