As an American I discovered UKG looking for instrumentals online in 2002 at Virginia tech. UK Grime/Garage? Bruv, UKG is the acronym for UK Garage, while Grime is just titled as Grime. That whole 'UK Grime' tag is there, because the UK Music industry got lazy with not separating UK Hip-Hop from Grime. Award shows like the MOBO's categorised UK Hip-Hop/Grime, which was the worst idea ever.

They seem to have faced some of the same issues N.W.A had - in that the rest of the US didn't want to hear how these kids had to grow up and how violent their inner cities were. The British public didn't want to hear it either and our politicians most certainly didn't want the condition of our inner cities, and all the ways they had failed the people who lived there brought into the public eye. This doesn’t make any sense and I hope I’m not the only one that is seeing it. In the video this guys highlights how the media used to essentially blamed So Solids music for crime in south London but over two decades later the description in his video is “most dangerous group..”. Surely he is trying to draw the same distinction between SS and Crime? I appreciate they weren’t angels but this seem like a bit of contradiction?
@RIDEMusicYT2 жыл бұрын
Hey man. I get what you’re saying, I think I was trying to weight up both. Like, they did get blamed unfairly for some stuff - like the Birmingham shooting - but they did do some mad stuff too. Like Carl Morgan did murder someone, that’s just fact. Aside from the Carl Morgan and Skat D things, I think So Solid were just normal folks caught in bad situations. In terms of the title, I’m playing the KZbin game man - but… Carl Morgan did shoot someone still. So… idk Does that make any sense? 😂

I get what you saying , but when a black man or a group of black men come together and say things it is deemed dangerous if there is any violence , Football games have thousands of white fans fighting but the teams do not get bad press and get labelled

@@gmain1977That form of SUPERIOR logic goes against his natural programming lol. He will malfunction against that intelligence. Can you not tell by his reply he is at a loss and can only play the "low ball"? He even apologises but can change. Type in "racism and narcissism" by Richard Grannon. Its innate behaviour and typical

Garage faded out and grime faded in, where Dizzee Rascal rose to be bigger than So Solid ever were.They could have switched to grime, but were not motivated to. They quickly became dated.

When Dizzee showed up the whole sound flipped on its head. I was so into it all at the time and he just broke it in the best way

So solid flopped out cos they didn't have the skill to evolve. They sounded gangster compared to MC creed and the garage mcs but soon as grime started so solid were done. They had 30 members and none of em could actually drop fire bars 😅 All style, no substance. Dizzee stab incident, Walters getting clowned on so hard at an open mic, there were so many examples of em getting hate from the scene. Quality stays around. So solid didn't have the levels. This whole so solid changed the game just isn't true. They charted. They didn't invent darker garage but rode the wave. Instead of having the bars to stay underground they went pop. Soon as dark garage got pushed out by time So Solid was Romeo doneeee 😅

Swiss had fire bars and still does, he was on another level to the rest of So Solid

This is true, just look at envy with ms dynamite, she outbarred and spun every single member on their own tune

Even asher vs dizzee, the disparity was too large they could not keep up at raves or clashes

I didn't rate them at the time. The UK already had a thriving underground rap scene. A good few of these MCs were absolute poets who understood rhyme-writing and the English language deeply. They used powerful metaphor, multisyllable rhyming, clever punch lines, puns, wordplay, assonance, alliteration, juxtaposition, clever rhyme schemes, story telling, psychology, references to mythology, theology, literature and political history etc etc etc. So Solid's early stuff was not that. Yeah, some of their later stuff was much better, and everyone has to start somewhere. It's just that the music industry didn't let you in unless you filled the negative preconceptions of prejudice Britain. It's almost as though they didn't want self educated and super smart non-white rappers to be role models (look how they've now treated Lowkey and Akala). I just think it's sad that we already had great MCs but they weren't as sensationalist and marketable to impressionable and rebellious middle class kids. Swiss is the best MC to come out of So Solid (and he didn't join until 2004). As it happens, what So Solid did has paved the way for a lot of other artists, but (like I said) I didn't rate them at the time (but perhaps I was already a little too old to look past the industry hype machine).

Fully agree with a lot of what you’re saying here. It’s criminal how the U.K. has treated the likes of Akala and Lowkey. Diamond artists like them fully deserve more respect and recognition but they’ll never get it from the mainstream. Just the way it is I suppose. They’re still getting through to the people that matter 🤷♂️

Vert true , UK industry is very prejudice towards black people. You need to take a look at how media and Britain acted towards Eminem

UK rap had always existed in the UK underground, but I think it was garage and then grime that appealed to a wider audience. You need to do a video about the UK underground rap scene and it's history... People like phi life cypher, London posse, taskforce, skinnyman and the list goes on. The UK hip hop and rap scene of the 90s and early 2000 was monumental.
