Take a look inside the Union Pacific gas turbine electric #X-18 located at the Illinois railroad museum. Only two of these are preserved. Filmed with permission from the volunteers.
At 7:36 I am in the second unit or B unit behind the locomotive, looking towards the rear of the train where the turbine is located. The B unit has three compartments each with walls. At 7:36 I am in the middle compartment looking at the turbine which is behind that machinery and a wall. There is no access to walk around that machinery but you can creep under it and go into a small portal where the turbine is. At 7:52 I turn around and walk towards another compartment in the B unit heading towards the locomotive. There is a small generator or portable welder in that unit. At 15:24 I am back in the middle of the B unit looking forward towards the locomotive. I would be looking at myself at the 7:36 mark if there was two of us. At 15:37 we are looking towards the rear of the train and in the final compartment where the turbine is located. You can see the exhaust stack which is at the very rear of the unit. As you can see there is no access either below, above, or on either side of the turbine. At 15:56 I am looking forward again with the turbine beside me. You can see how it is possible to gain access to the turbine room by bending down under that machinery.
