Sky News US Analyst Michael Ware discusses possible running mates for US Vice President Kamala Harris if she becomes the Democratic candidate.
“Even if Kamala Harris were to assume the Democratic Party nomination, the other question is who would be her running mate?” Mr Ware told Sky News Australia.
“There are lots of names being bandied about, one of who is the
Governor of Pennsylvania, which is a key swing state, and he is very popular there, but he doesn’t have national name recognition.
Another potential running mate is Gretchen Whitmer, she is the Governor of Michigan, and some believe that she could pull in not only Michigan but other Rust Belt states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
“It’s an absolute dog show what’s going on right now in the Democratic Party.”

There is nothing in the US Constitution that prevents a Presidential candidate and his (or her) running mate being from the same state. It is not normally done, but there are no rules against it.

The Constitution says the electoral college electors can't vote for a president and vice president unless one of them is not from the electors' state. So if Harris picked Newsom, the California electors couldn't vote for them. The same goes for Florida if Trump picked a Floridian. Of course, one of the candidates could move to a different state.
