I know the perfect house for you Geoff - My old one in Wilkinson Street SW8...The Victoria line runs right under the garden..you can only *just* hear it and our lease was strange saying we only owned the top 20ft of our garden, everything under that belonged to LT! In the summer , if you sunbathed on the lawn on your stomach you could feel the rumble coming up through your body...like a massage chair...very relaxing!

I still think that the Victoria Line should be given the go ahead to be extended including from Walthamstow Central to Woodford or South Woodford and from Brixton to Croydon or Beckenham or Bromley. With the Bakerloo Line to be extended from Elephant & Castle to Hayes and Bromley via Lewisham. And with 2 new Underground stations being added on Old Kent Road.

Hi I was an Apprentice to London Transport in the 1960's. Up until the Victoria line was built all lines were interconnected for maintainance purposes. The tracks are service from Lilly Bridge depot. The trains were service on a daily bases in their local running depot of which each line has at least one and all major service was carried out at the West London depot at Acton Town which is now the museum storage depot.

H010 most of the Piccadilly line faults come from outdated signalling and particularly control room apparatus, meaning service recovery is slow or control room mistakes cause service disruption. The 1973 stock is actually very reliable for its age

With that many trains so close together in an automated system , your going to get much more service problems when trains fail or signaling technology goes up the spout . Plus you only have a few turn back crossovers to divert a failed service onto to it can tip out and run empty to the depot ,

Wow the tube gets stuff done quickly and efficiently -unlike the NYC subway-
@emjayay4 жыл бұрын
NYC subways that aren't cut and cover are drilled through solid rock. London Tube is through clay. And NYC subways are all 4 track while the Tube is 2 track. And once London got past the postwar period it really started to invest in the Tube. NYC didn't update anything for half a century and only started about two decades ago. But still there are obvious problems with NYC subways and lack of new lines and extensions that should have been done fifty years ago, and cost way too much when they do happen.

Geoff, it’s wonderful engineering at Victoria, and think that’s is going to be a victim of its own success, in that there are only two tube tunnels, at currently entrances are blocked off/shut to passengers from the British Rail concourse at rush hour, or if the service is not running well, all this will do is build up more people underground creating a H&S issue for evacuations, creating even more overcrowding, and at present, the current trains can’t cope at peak periods. So in essence, the project is deeply floored, as the Victoria line should have been a four tunnel system throughout, allowing the stabilisation of trains at key points, allowing other trains to pass or terminate mid-way taking away the peaks congestion at rush hour, even out of peak times, the service is congested, adding a new ticket hall and entrances does help, but for the reasons mentioned above, it’s storing up trouble for the future.

The Victoria line has the advantage that is A to B with no lines splitting or joining, unlike most other tube lines, allowing the tight schedules. At the Brixton end, the driver "steps back" and another driver takes the control in the opposite direction to keep up the schedules.

Hi Geoff. I'm not so sure whether you are aware of the problems in Singapore. But I think it would be great to do a Q&A in Singapore of the Victoria Line 36 TPH. Any chance you & V will come to Asia? Most deep level lines are completely isolated from other tube lines in terms of tracks. The only inter-connected lines are the sub-surface lines. The tube is very different from say the NYCS, where trains can go wherever they want if they just change track.
@iaspex12897 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. :)
@S1lverArr0w7 жыл бұрын
Each tube line has it's own array of terminus depots. There's one at each end and usually a couple in the middle. And theoretically you could use one deep level rolling stock and travel on every line possible. It's just a matter of finding the interchangeable tracks and reversing one or two times

@totalnike035 жыл бұрын
No the jubilee and northern line use a system called CBTC (communication based train control) which was installed by Thales, also being installed on the district hammersmith and city circle and metropolitan lines. This CBCT allows for in cab signalling by making use of axel counters, inductive loops and wayside radio equipment which the train is constantly communicating its position to.
