That segmented window weight was used for various sized windows to adjust for larger (heaver) or smaller (lighter) windows. Rather than needing specific weights, just adding or subtracting a segment to get the proper weight.

I enjoy your videos and love your enthusiasm for finding old things in the ground or in old structures. It was mentioned in this video about looking in places in old buildings for hidden treasures and I wanted to mention about three old (1936) conetop beer cans I have that are near mint condition that were found in a wall of an old supermarket that was being torn down to be made into an office building. These three cans are the pride of my little collection and they could have been easily overlooked and trashed with the rest of the construction materials had someone not looked in the wall while taking it down.

With the way that one porch joist was notched out to specifically go in that hole, you should keep it so when you rebuild the porch you can create the replacement joist from that pattern. Also I would put the clapboard back on the side of the bottom of the house until you can replace the board. And the window weights, they are able to be reused as there are replacement pulleys available, and the ropes are fully available now too so they can work like new (the old weights are restringable).

Robert! Shame on you for psyching this ol' lady with that jar! 😁🤗 It's my understanding that when they would replace those old sash windows, they'd just cut the ropes and leave the weights cuz they were such a bear to take out. I've never seen a jointed one either. Cool stuff! 👍💜
@Ragnar85043 жыл бұрын
Quite possible, although I think these windows weren't ever replaced. More likely the ropes broke near the pulleys and the weights fell down.
@Sister3253 жыл бұрын
The weights and ropes can be rehung. Don't toss the weights. Someone may rehang them in the future. I get new rope for my windows, at...write me, for the URL. Those old ropes are the proper kind of window cord, but the kot is wrong for adjusting the rope. Old windows are the souls and eyes of an old house. They work well if cleaned, re-puttied and the glazing reinstalled/replaced etc. Storm windows were probably used for winter proofing, seasonally. Can ya tell I love old houses and have one? Also Nice to see everyone and Cody!

Isn't that just plaster that fell into the bay cavity from the inside when they troweled the plaster on the lath? I had a couple of old weights and used them for gate closers - their weight just pulls the gate closed if you hang it on a rope or chain from the door to the gate post on the hinge side.

@@THEOLDBYRDFARMVLOG Lime plaster and mortar are literally the same thing used for different purposes (although plaster often had animal hair in it and mortar didn't) so I do think it's plaster. Those window weights are still made for renovated homes as the ropes tend to rot or get painted over and the window no longer works properly. Easy to replace. The 3 piece weight could be a replacement where they added 3 smaller weights to total the weight of the original. I had a 1920s apartment that I needed to replace the rope and weight.

The window weights suck as boat anchors because when you drop them they shoot into the mud like an arrow and burry themselves. When you try to pull them up they create a vacuum behind them and you have to cut the rope and leave them. They worked great for river anchors but not for lakes with deep sediment. Coleman gas fired pressure cloths irons were also a favorite boat anchor after electric came on the scene. I can't even begin to tell you how many Coleman pressure irons I have found diving in lakes and rivers over the years. By the way the linked window weights were used to replace lost weights in areas that the header or top rail made it impossible to install a new rigid or solid weight because of low clearance, IE low ceiling on porches or addition extensions.
