Uncover the surprisingly humble home of the man behind the world’s largest retail empire. From his early days in the Great Depression to building a business that changed the way America shops, Sam Walton remained grounded-even as he became the richest man in America.

Walmart was much better when Sam was alive. I remember him touting most of his products were made in the USA. American flags were often in his TV ads, along with himself. After he died the suits took over and most of their products came from CHINA, at a much lower cost. And a MUCH higher profit. They have put out of business a LOT of smaller places and even American factories.

I also worked for Wal-Mart in the late 80s - early 90s. I went through their management trainee program while finishing up my bachelor's degree. I actually met Sam Walton when he came to one of the stores that I was an Assistant Manager in. He was very kind and appreciated my work managing the upfront cashiers. He complimented me on my smile. I agree that he is most likely not too happy with the way things are ran in his stores now. I do not shop in Wal-Mart now because I see how much they have gone downhill.

@@LA_Mom_2023 Sam Walton retired in 1988 and Walmart sales were $15 billion and net income was $.6 billion or 3.9%. Now (2023) sales are $611 Billion and net income was $11.7 billion or 1.9%. Explain, if customers aren't happy, why sales increased 40 fold since Sam Walton left? Maybe it is because Walmart is keeping less profit for the corporation and sharing more of the profit with the customer. Profits are down 50%. Customers must see a better deal and flock to Walmart.

I worked for Walmart in Hot Springs AR when there were only 350 stores. He and his wife bussed all the employed our families to his home on Bentonville for a cook out…because our store was number one for the third year on a row. What a house to see in person. Walmart was pretty new to our area in the early 1990s, knew somebody who got a job there. As soon as Sam Walton died he noticed all of the American-made goods were getting replaced with imported stuff. When he asked the manager about it, he was simply told "we're in the business of making money". He quit the job shortly afterwards. Walmart has done more to cause the closing of American factories than pretty much any other factor of our society, and for that reason I'll never shop there.

Mr. Sam was a fine man. His greedy kids grew the company and intentionally shut down local competition in small towns to establish a monopoly. Then by reputation they moved into suburban America. They sell with the clams of being patriotic and buy products from China for consumers. Don't even get me started on how they treat employees. I have not shopped there in years. I would rather pay a dollar more and support local retail. Sorry Ken. You gave a good report, but I am prejudiced by knowing behind the scenes corporate greed involved here.

They just pretended that was their home. I went there to meetings & that was just like a “summer” home. It wasn’t their main home. When he died we most a lot of our benefits. They called us associates because I were given some of the profits. They called it profit sharing. They took that away about 10 yrs ago so they’re not “associates “ anymore just employees. And the home office thinks we’re a dime a dozen. They had an open door policy but that gone too. Their insurance sucks & they prefer to have part time employees cause they don’t have to give them benefits. Just before I quit in 2009 they started getting rid of those that had 20 or more yrs with the company. They’re no better than any other country now if not one of the worse to work for.

She had nothing but good things to say about Sam, and in 1973 while working at Sam's favorite restaurant, Fred's Hickory Inn in Bentonville, I finally got to meet Sam Walton as he always asked for me to be his bus boy. Of course it was some 30 years later that I finally realized that man in the restaurant was the man my grandmother talked about, Sam Walton. Sadly due to military service, I never saw him again, but to be reminded of his kind nature I would pull out my one dollar Silver Certificate, with hand writing on it that read "To my favorite bus boy, Allan"

I used to work at Sears in the 70's. Occasionally, the big shots would come in for an inspection and the bosses would get on us to have everything perfect. One time, they just walked up the main isle and then went out to play golf. I don't recall ever hearing of anyone other than upper management talking to them. Big difference.

Went to the Walton Family Museum several years ago. I knew Alice Walton lived in Texas at one time. She was one of the richest ladies in the world! In 1998, Walton moved to a ranch in Millsap, Texas, named Walton's Rocking W Ranch. An avid horse-lover, she was known for having an eye for determining which 2-month-olds would grow to be champion cutters. Walton listed the farm for sale in 2015 and moved to Fort Worth, Texas, citing the need to focus on the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. She moved back to Bentonville in 2020.

Target stores attempted to have stores here but failed after only a couple of years they shuttered them as they couldn’t compete with Walmart success which they were hoping to replicate . Fay designed many great homes. This is merely one of them. I've had the great fortune to work on a few Fay Jones properties, as well as one from a contemporary of his, Ernie Jacks. Fascinating and beautiful homes. It's fun to see the differences between the two architects too. Jacks house was significantly more difficult to work on/modify. We have continued working on one of them even recently. Funnily enough it's owned by another billionaire family. That's about all I can say about that one.

He had a pilots license for two engine planes. He had a pr team pushing his frugal life style. His kids are worth over 200 billion the poorest only 39 billion worth. He built a high school for the city with 3000 seat auditorium yet school only had 700 students. A great tax, Wright off. He used it for company meetings. Like all FLW knockoffs, the house is rigid and inflexible. No allowance is made for personal items or furniture not designed by the architect, which being mostly built-in defies rearranging. The exterior however nestles into its footprint nicely and is not without charm… the dichotomy of the Prairie school of architecture. That being said Walmart is still a cancer on the American retail landscape.

I love that he moved everyone into a doublewide during the renovations. 😁 People love to hate Walmart. I was middle-aged before I ever shopped in one because I lived in big cities, where they didn't exist at the time. Once I moved to small town Midwest, I started shopping there. Now I get things delivered and it's fantastic. I recently moved to a new state and got everything I needed both for the moving supplies on one end and new outdoor furniture on the other end from Walmart, delivered to my door. For reasons too numerous to go into here, shopping is not the way it was 15 years ago, much less 50. I was a child just before the civil rights era and old enough to know how some small retailers where I lived treated people of color. Not everyone had great shopping experiences in the days of the small merchant.

I loved the house! The influence of Wright is obvious but the architect “softens” much of what turns me off to Frank Lloyd Wright’s houses. This house felt homey, less cold and stark than FLW designs. The galley kitchen, the loggia, the entry way, the vaulted ceilings, the floating shelves and the many windows were just beautiful. I dont care as much for the bedrooms, however. I’ve lived in enough barracks in the Marines to recognize a room that sacrifices personal style and taste on the altar of conformity. (translation: the bedrooms appear to have had very little thought put into the idea of making them “charming”) Thanks Ken! For sharing this unique house.
