I believe that the novels of Diana Gabaldon on which Outlander is based, are beautiful, with very well defined and captivating characters. I understand that Outlander is an adaptation of these novels, however when producers and writers change too much the plot of the novels or the characters, the series doesn't work very well. It is for that reason that the 1st season worked wonderfully well! The adaptation was good but true to the story and the characters.

D***, D***, D***! I watched this series and have been captivated by the beautiful scenery and the simple tale of Claire and Jamie. Been binge watching back-to-back episodes since episode 1 of season 1... Everything was fine until Frank in Ayr. Then I realised just how invested I have become in the show. Cried buckets. So glad it's been picked up for at least two more seasons.

I don't think frank is a good person. He clearly doesn't love Claire as much as Jamie does. When he found out that Jamie was still alive and Claire goes back to Jamie but dies in a fire he selfishly never told her for her happiness and to warn her about the fire. In contrast when Jamie found out she tried to go back through the stones to Frank after the love and intimacy they had just shared im sure he was hurt. But he put her happiness before his own and took her back to the stones. He loves her more than he loves himself. He will ALWAYS be the better man in MY book. ❤

Deb Deb that was the difference between the men's personalities, and how their love for Claire was expressed. Frank was somewhat selfish, while Jamie was selfless.

This episode missed a huge amount of the character and personality of Briana, portraying her as ignorant of how to take care of herself. The dress cloak and boots were a travesty of what Brianna would have worn. In the book she is eminently practical and sensible and had many skills - some of them down to her father who knew what may happen in her future). The boots were rubbish - so much wasted time on her walking through the wilderness and completely unnecessarily twisting her ankle. She had the money to outfit herself appropriately and buy money for the era she was travelling to, courtesy of her inheritance from Claire. As one person commented she would have gotten a horse and she did in fact head straight to Lallybroch, not a port and the map was a joke. Disappointed with Lizzy - hard to see how the actor they have chosen will pan out in some of the future scenarios as a small shy but attractive young girl. I don't mind the plot being messed with but messing with Brianna's character and personality is a big mistake and a disappointment. I do hope that she is portrayed as the strong and independent person in future episodes as is her due.

I'm also very unhappy with the way the TV show is portraying Brianna. The "real" Brianna may have been reckless but she was very capable and stood her ground when necessary. One of the defining moments into her character in the books is the way she yelled at Leogahaire when she tried to take her mothers pearls and swore at her. Instead the TV show are portraying her as a little girl who needs looking after, falling down a hill and twisting her ankle then ending being pampered by the woman who her mother hates! I simply don't like the way they are making her into a victim. Also I can understand them making Lizzie a little older due to the upcoming story (she was massively underage at the time by modern US standards) but to change her physical appearance altogether and make her older than Brianna will mean that their relationship dynamics are changed completely. I understand that many things have to change due to the practicalities of TV and I'm overall fine with that but why add new stories which have no importance to the story. I just hope the upcoming episodes are closer to the books.

I believe Frank has been maligned unfairly. He and Claire were happy until Claire disappeared at the stones. Frank pestered the local police about his missing wife and was optimistic about seeing her again. We have no idea how their relationship might have developed had they remained together - Claire never having met Jamie. Although Claire tried in vain to return to the stones to get back to Frank, it was Claire who chose to take up with Jamie. She might have remained a healer until such time as she could get back to the stones and Frank but she made the decision to place herself in the path of the law of the 18th century by adhering to her 20th century beliefs instead of laying low. When she arrived back with Frank, she told him honestly what had happened and suddenly Frank finds out that his wife, whom he loves dearly, had been with another man, married him and is carrying Jamie's child. That's a lot for anyone to take in, it's betrayal at its lowest form. I believe many people see Jonathan Randall in Frank and as such he is unfairly tarred with the same brush as 'Black Jack'. Black Jack may have been an officer but he was no gentleman and his depravity knew no depths. On the other hand, Frank had loved Claire all along until she returned and revealed her story. Frank was an officer AND a gentleman all along. Even when he agreed to raise Jamie's daughter as his own - that's a huge ask of any person. Frank kept his promise to Claire to help raise Brianna. That their marriage was a facade and he eventually met someone else who made him happy is still coming from Claire's decision to marry Jamie after falling foul of English law which she could have avoided. Had I been transported back to the 18th century, I would have sought work to feed myself and keep a roof over my head until I was able to get back again. Of course, it would not have made for a very interesting story...

The producers want to make Frank so good that they make him a victim of Jamie and Claire. Jamie is the only one responsible that the marriage of Claire and Frank fail and make Claire look like an absent mother, a desinterested wife and a insensitive person for not being able to love that saint. I prefer the version of the books, where it's clear that Claire and Frank were destined to fail because of their differences (he is a racist, a sexist and very unfaithful from the beginning of their marriage) and if they were so many years together it was thanks to Brianna. He was a great father and nothing more. On the other hand, it's paradoxical that someone so good was willing to let Claire die in a fire, a horrible way to die.
@95CeliaM
@95CeliaM 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, I agree with what you said about "book Franck" and "show Franck" but I feel like what the producers meant to convey here was that yes, Franck did discover that Claire was going to die in the future BUT that also meant that he was going to die before her in the 20th century and pretty soon, based on the time of the obituary (if he believes the 200 years span that time travel takes) so that might have may be why he decided to leave with Brianna and to divorce Claire, because he knew he was going to die. Maybe he would have said something to Claire, but then again he died before he could or even wanted.

Not only could they not force Jenny / Laura to honor her contract for 3 scenes, but now Brianna has to feel guilty over Frank ' s death...and he found out about Jamie having survived Culloden when Brianna was a child and the thing in the book is that then he could have told Claire and she could have gone back...but he did not out of egoistical reasons...so he is a negative character...........him finding the death notice when Brianna was an adult does not come close to a substitute for the events of the book.........this episode has too many character misrepresentations to fill in for a missing actress.....and please stop trying to make Frank and Leoghaire positive characters - they are NOT

Frank was a negative character long before this episode. In the books as well as the series. The series just made him a little more easy to identify with. I don't think they make either Frank and Leoghaire positive characters at all, just a little more human in terms of their background, which is normal for TV. This series is based off the books, but it doesn't mean everything will be exactly like the books. I prefer a little difference every now and then anyway. As the Harry Potter writer said of the Harry Potter movies. The DNA thread is still there. And I am bastardizing that quote; not saying it exactly. Way too many fans of the books are purists in a way that makes reading comments more annoying than need be in this particular fandom, as TV Shows and novels always end up needing to be different.

I've been reading the books on and off between episodes, (I read the 4th book before this season) but I think I honestly prefer the TV show. It's like they're building on the brilliant foundation that DG laid out. So often when I come across love triangles I end up villainising one of the love interests but this is the first time I love them both. I love both Jamie and Frank. And I see that more in the show than in the books. The show writing may not speak to everyone, and of course things always change from book to screen, but I gotta say I still love the quality of the show.

There are so many good details in this part of the book, that I am missing! Brianna acts like a little girl and not like the strong young woman she really is. Where are her trousers and her horse? Rogers as a historian should know how to dress in 18th Century. Ships didn't sail to the conlonies in wintertime. Where is Brianna bonding to her family in Lallybroch? Puts her grandmothers pearls on the table and confronts Laoghaire, looks just like her grandmother Ellen and reads Jamies letters send to Lallybroch? And Lizzy should be a fragile girl, that Brianna takes care of like a poppy, not even have her menstruation yet. Why make a wonderful deep good story full of inspiring moments into a saltless soup?

I haven't read the books, so am not upset by any deviation from them. Books are never adapted word for word onto the screen, it just doesn't work. Even Shakespeare gets carved up for film or TV versions. I do agree that there was a bit much of Brianna trudging thro the glens though. And I find her quite hard on Frank at times, and quite narcissistic, eg re the divorce: "Don't I have a say?" Well no dear, because its Frank's and Claire's marriage, not yours....

After all this story is about Jamie he is king of men .....Frank took this child,, Jamie gave up a child,,,he has sacrificed everything he holds dear for the people who he loves ..... The writer pretend to know him, but they don't... There should have been someone at Lallybroch, someone to tell Brianna about her father. . And how she reminds him of his mother...to give her some sense of family so when she meet her father she already know and respects him.... This was horrific I am done with this show... They have massacred D.B. books by taking them apart and left disjointed and miss characterization of characters.... Now I'm finding out that Ms. Balfe is getting another job on Netflix. As I am a book fan I am rather disappointed with this episode. All this is extra or changed material, is this really necessary to make the series more visual, I think not. What about Frank, I like Tobias Menzies enormously but was all this needed for the storyline? In the books I got the impression that there was some kind of mystery about trhe accidennt, suicide due to hartproblems? De finding out of Jamies facts are also not so explicid in the books. ( The gravestone is not mentioned here). Then I am worried about the actress they chose to be Lizzie, already Brianna is not so tall as in the books, Lizzie shoud be a chidllijke small girl. How is it possible for this actress , who is taller and bigger than Brianna , to be the fearfull and rather weak Lizzie. How can Diana Gabaldon accept all this, the story goes from being about Claire and Jamie to a variety of side caracters who are differently depicted in the books

I loved this episode. I have read the books several times and find it boring when adaptions are too faithful to the source material. They grounded the story with the changes they made. The changes are more believable than the book. The idea of Brianna travelling to the past and being all gung ho and ignoring the harsh realities of the role of women in that century when she had been studying history at college level stretched my suspension of disbelief. The portrayal of TV Frank makes more sense to me than the book Frank. Book Frank is an outright douche while TV Frank is a more nuanced character, more human, with virtues and vices like anyone. I was in tears at the end when he was bidding farewell to Bree at the dock. Tobias is an amazing actor - he really shined in this episode without Caitriona in any scene with him. Caitriona gets the lion's share of attention but Tobias is an incredible talent too.

@@mariselaisea5417 This has nothing to do about Jamie wanting to raise Bree she knows this, but Frank as sad it unfourently is for Jamie is the one who has raised Bree all her life and took her on as if she was his own daughter and for that he will forever remain her dad and she will always love him and see him as that.

Curieux. Founded a good translater. 🌪🔥⚡🌞👏👏👏👍💌💕

200 years not 2. Sorry. Omg for Frank it's not personnal. Il joue bien son rôle mais je le hais en tant que Black Jack Randall. Ouach... 👊

Jaime all the way!!, he made a hugh sacrifice so Claire and Bree could live...Frank was unable to have kids....that's the only reason he took Bree...

I understand some changes, and liked the episode as a whole, but why would they let Lizzie be portrayed by a girl in her 20s, when she's barely even 13 in the books? it takes away lots of her character and future storyline..

@starz - why on earth do you shave Roger’s face to go into the past!? So ridiculous since shaving was a novelty back then. Also why does Brianna’s hair go from straight to curly? Same with Claire.

Do you know what does that mean k-a-r-m-a??? Translater please!

I don't really see why everyone likes Frank so much. Or maybe for me it's Menzies playing him that is so bothersome for me. Frank just gets very little pity from me.

Can't be bothered reading the books. It's so boring. I'll just watch on TV. Brianna is in danger. And Roger looks so funny in those trousers
