INSIDE Whitchurch Insane Asylum - ABANDONED Mental Institutes

Whitchurch Asylum opened in 1908 in south Wales, 2 miles of corridors connect a total of ten wards, designed to accommodate 750 patients.
It was a self-contained institute, with its own farm, bakery, dance hall, 800-seat church and even a clothing shop.
During both the first and second World War, the facility was taken over by the military.
It was undoubtedly a product of Victorian Age thinking and medical practice.
‘People would be spending their lives there, so it had to function like a self-contained society," said a former nurse.
‘We had some good results, but a lot died’ said Dr Morfydd Keen. ‘The people who have stayed are ingrained in the walls, there are a lot of ghosts of people that seep into you.’
In the 1980s the hospital went into a period of decline and by the 2000s it was considered unsuitable for the requirements of the 21st century and the doors were locked for the last time in April 2016.
It remains today as one of the UKs only abandoned asylums, an eerie, decaying shell of a bygone era…

Asylum’s are notoriously haunted!!! Sad that people spent their entire lives locked up in this place, once diagnosed with a mental or what they considered at the time, a mental illness 😞😢😰 As nice as this place was, I’m sure that there were numerous bad memories made here😞😢😰 Sad that the beautiful solid hardwood doors, antique lighting fixtures & stained glass,be saved 😞😢😰 Thank you Jess & Sam for allowing us to visit this awesome place 👍🙏💕

It is in many ways touching that the facility tried to provide all the elements that one might expect in a village for those who couldn’t care for themselves or had no one to care for them. We frequently find the restrictions of Victorian life and it’s adherence to a stratified society as laughable or ridiculous, but at the same time they made an attempt to provide for those falling through the cracks of society. And this “village“ also provided a transition for those exposed to the horrors of industrial warfare on a scale scarcely imaginable. Nice exploration, thanks.

Totally Amazing! I do love an abandoned asylum! It always has my mind slightly blown when I see the attention to detail that went into building these places, the amount of money spent must of been huge. I just can’t imagine that happening today! Hello, from Georgia! I enjoy this content and the way Sam and Jess interact is so sweet. I love it . I have traveled to several places in Europe spent two weeks there such a amazing place and history. So nice to watch your videos and experience other places as well. By the way Sam has the perfect voice for narrating the videos and introduction. Question ❓ why doesn't Sam ever drive?? Lol . Also like that even though you have troubles at times like flat tire, sometimes the places you stay at is not great, sleeping in a tent, driving and traveling long periods at a time etc you both never get upset or with each other it's truly inspiring. Wishing you both continued success and happiness 😊

Amazing! Great explore. I would so lay on the morgue table lol. On one of my trips to England, I explored a Victorian infectous dieases hospital that wasnt trashed to bad. I caught a few odd things and alot of orbs in my photos. There was no security and it still had an active aged care twilight ward in one building, only a board seperating it from the abandoned side of the ward. I often wonder what its like now. Victorian buildings are my favorites to explore.

When it was a self-sufficient insane asylum, the clothes shop was where they sold clothes that the patients had learn to sew in sewing class to the public. Kind of like the very first Thrift Shops, I suppose. Other patients could purchase them, as well. Good explore.

Even though it's a video those places give me the chills. They are like something out of a Hammer Horror movie. Although they tried to modernize them and pretty them up the misery of long ago patients still hangs in the air. You two will never age and always will be young at heat. My Grandmother was in there a few times from a nervous breakdown due to being in a very abusive marriage. She was an amazing woman that was an RN in WW2. This is crazy but I moved to the US at 21 and became a nurse at 41 working as a caseworker with over 24 individuals and some from Penshurst Hospital. Makes me sad to see where my Grandmother was taken.
