You should check it out sometime. If the electorate chooses representatives who’s decisions are influenced by a shared religion, does that make the election of that representative invalid, or the the actions of that representative invalid unless said actions are outside the confines of the Constitution? “The Church” (or lack thereof/anti-Church) can influence and have sway on the government, but the government cannot influence or have sway on “The Church”/religion. Conversely, while elected representatives can make policy decisions through the lens of someone who has a faith (even if those who do not have faith do not agree, so long as the policy Constitutional), they cannot use the force of government to coerce non-believers into practicing a particular religion. More people should understand this and not get confused by it. Though, I do understand that some prefer to be willfully confused if it better comports with their preferred world-view.

Church on Sunday..Tucked away on page 589, in the section focused on reforming the Department of Labor, is a breathtaking proposal to use American laws to support religious doctrine. At a previous place of employment, the rules said employees could take off two unpaid days a year for unspecified religious holidays. I asked my boss if I could use one of those on a non-Christian holiday. She glared and told me not to push it, that I could call it a personal day but NOT a religious day. Non-Christian citizens often risk losing a job, home, child custody, etc if someone with more power objects to their faith or lack of faith. It gets bad in red states and dangerous in rural parts of red states. Fanatics love to hate.

Just remember that if the framers of our Constitution had intended the nation's government to be under or heavily influenced by any particular faith, religion or god, they would have clearly stated that intention in the Constitution. It's nowhere to be found in that document. Even the Declaration of Independence did not mention a god but used the term creator which is ambiguous at best and particularly does not refer to a god or it would have said God. Our Bill of Rights were crafted by the framers and the first one that came to their minds provides for the prohibition of the establishment of any national religion and gives the people the right to believe and practice whatever religion or none as they choose to. That directly contradicts the biblical first commandment which obviously means it wasn't given to us by any god, but by wise men who knew the tyranny and oppression of government-imposed religion.

Take it from a 78 year old man who's gay and has known this since ... about 70 years ago. (esp @russh6414) I'm also very, very mindful of the Christian right (and that includes old world Catholicism under which I grew up) and its attitude to gay people. However, I've lived and worked in four Islamic countries: 2 years each in Morocco and Saudi Arabia and 1 year each in UAE and Egypt. Met many wonderful, gracious, hospitable people but I was not naive to think that many of them would have condemned me, not only to my face but physically as well for being gay. As for 'pushing your agenda' .. you've probably never been pushed and at times yelled at for not accepting Islam. For this reason, though I unequivocal am against ANY religious regime I fear Islam above all. Somehow, Islam has largely been passed over for condemnations as to how they treat women, gays/lesbians, Christians ... et al that do not follow the 'word' of Allah and Muhammad. Don't be so naive.
