Video suggestion: This might be a weird suggestion for a video, but I’m interested in the relationship between certain martial arts. That includes arts that have often been taught together or combined, like Bajiquan and Piguaquan, Taekwondo and Hapkido, Savate and Le Canne, FMA and JKD, or Tai Chi Chuan and Shuai Jiao. I’m also interested in classic rivalries between styles, like Kyokushin vs Taikiken, or BJJ vs Luta Livre.

My lineage here in USA is the first and oldest existing kung fu school and the first CLF to be taught here. Our Founder Lau Bun, had run ins with bruce lee. Choy Lee Fut was developed for war. It was used in many of the uprisings and revolutions and even the over throwing of the Qing Dynasty. It can def work in the ring and works extremely well on the streets. Combat runs in the DNA of choy lee fut.

@@inside_fighting I totally agree. In Choy Lee Fut we have 3 major branches that all developed seperately from one another but the root is still Choy Lee Fut. ALL 3 brances are combat focused and some have adopted BJJ since CLF is a stand up system. I've had my guys fight in Karate, San Shou, and now against Muay Thai. So, while most of kung fu was just happy doing forms, my guys were out in the streets getting into fights every weekend. so i had to change my teaching to focus on combat first. One thing i love about CLF is that we have everything a fighter needs for stand up combat. Even after 42 years into one system, i'm still seeing and learning as CLF is a system that one can live 3 lifetimes adn still find new stuff in it.

The actual meaning of gongfu (功夫) (i.e. kung fu) as it's used in the Chinese language, is (skill/attainment developed) through substantial time & effort. Often, it's used as an euphemism for martial arts, because developing martial skill does take substantial time & effort, but for the same reason, it can also be used for parkour, cooking, etc etc. If there is one main philosophy in the "martial art" of kung fu, then it is this: if a move, stance, tactic etc didn't work for you initially, you put in the time & effort (i.e. practice, sparring, correction, habituation...) to *make* it work eventually. (within reasonable limits of course. obviously if you try to intercept a punch with your face then you haven't actually intercepted it.) It's a transformative process. Your mind & body changes, and the technique works. In other words, if you're always expecting to learn some technique that is going to work by virtue of being a certain kind of technique (with no conditioning on your part), that's actually the *opposite* of kung fu. Hence, people who go around pointing fingers at kungfu demonstrations and saying, "that's not practical in a real fight!" are almost totally missing the point.

Choy Li Fut ,i would love an indepth look at their swinging punches. Is it closer to Hung Gar? Kuro Obi World make a video about using Kung Fu in MMA. In my opinion Kung Fu is a gold mine of opportunities for Mma fighters, nowadays people are doing the same things, arts are ristagnating and reducing to the most "optimal" ,leaving out a lot options. I like to see new stuff, and there are a lot of things that they only do, waiting only to be brought the mainstream. You need someone that understand both the old and new,so that it can translate effectively. The future of Grappling is adding Biting and Small Joint imho, and that can be achieved through Kinamutay and Chin Na.

Bruce Lee praised Choy Li Fut because of it’s early on willingness to compete against Thai fighters. They have always had a fighters mentality. It’s also the original Chinese Martial Art to land in America. Hung Sing Tong has been in California probably 150 years. Wing Chun and Choy Li Fut are both adaptable because they are adaptations themselves. Wing Chun adapts police / security along with peasant military (the butterfly knives) and Choy Li Fut was connected to the highest levels of the Boxers Rebellion, it adapts military weaponry and grappling to the empty hand civilian style. That’s why everything is not meant to be “tightened up.” Some of it is throws, grip fighting escapes, etc, if you tighten everything up trying to make it all “Boxing” then you lose some of the essence of it. The “boxing” footwork is already in CLF as well, the entire game of CLF is off-angle striking which is what makes it Wing Chun’s natural rival because that is Wing Chun’s biggest weakness. At least the Wing Chun we have today. Mainland China Wing Chun is a lot more dynamic, and has a lot more footwork and angles, it is not so flat footed or straight-line focused. Ip Man kind of OVER-simplified the art, to be quite honest.
