Now if only car makers over in the UK would listen. There is a big market for something like this. Instead we get ever more expensive alternatives on our roads. I would buy this at this price as it would be incredibly rare that I might need something else. Please someone make this possible in the UK.

Not with legacy brands, people are so shocked they don't have this in the market considering the apparent demand. It's not shocking at all, budget cars like this have lower profit margins, that's why legacy western brands don't make them, it's quite simple really.

@InsideChinaAuto

They're great for getting around and are really popular in the smaller cities. Even the tiniest ones that are called LSEVs are still on sale in smaller cities and rural areas, simply as a way to get around and stay dry when needed. Should always be wary though, those smaller ones are usually made by disreputable companies and come with risks, not least safety and fires, but this Panda is at least made right by a company with a good reputation.

Now imagine this with a solar panel instead of panoramic roof! It could give you exactly enough boost to use it as whole city aglomerate length if driving with that extra 10-16 km of sun charge! Here, in Israel, where we hardly have more than 80 km between major cities, it would cut our traffic jams in half at the very least! Especially when you think about almost half of the cars on daily road being used for some duet of workers with some tools and stuff using FIAT Doblos at the very least and the other half almost entirely consists of loner-drivers on SUVs they got from work😢

I have not been on the EV bandwagon for a multitude of reasons and most of them having to do with the fact that all the car and truck manufacturers are just making the same mistakes by building EVs that are just too damn big and are just EV versions of the ICE vehicles they have been pushing on people for years now. That said I love seeing these little mini EV cars and think that this is where they should have all started to begin with. They make more sense right now rather than trying to shift everyone into a big EV car or truck which require too big a battery and leave many people with that range anxiety worry. But these will never make it to the US because of the ridiculous rules and safety bs that keeps even the Japanese kei cars from being sold here. And that is the real shame of it all. I would buy one of these in a second if we could get them here.

I guess they won’t allow this brilliant car in Britain either. Main reason being the government will make almost ZERO taxes out of it, despite all the BS about emissions and pollution from I.C.E. vehicles. This would be perfect for commuting within London. Perfect if you have a small drive you can’t fit a Tesla on - but this would fit perfectly. Charge it overnight at home only (helps if there’s charging at work too) and that’s it. The perfect commuter vehicle. I find it cynical and ironic that those dangerous stand up e-Scooters with the impossibly tiny wheels are readily available for rent in London, but the UK authorities will wheel out two billion reasons why this vehicle MUST NOT be sold in the UK….(unless some Quango can import them and rent them to commuters for truly exorbitant fees for an hour). These should be sold here, even if they’re classed as quadricycles - though clearly, this vehicle is more than that. Tricking the general public into believing that the only EVs available cost upwards of £30k - while turning a blind eye to people dangerously perching on illegal e-Scooters - in the hope that, that’s all the lower classes will aspire to, (while insidiously banning the sales of EV’s like this Panda Mini EV) is a particularly cruel crime perpetuated by those running the UK. Over here, they’re still dreaming of seeing / forcing the lower classes on bicycles regardless of the weather (or Cattle Class Public Transport - which cannot cope and is often highly inconvenient due to a lack of proper investment). I’d buy one of these in a heartbeat. Very handy for commuting and shopping. I don’t go far, have a free bus pass for Central London anyway as I wouldn’t even drive there now anyway, but appreciate the idea of relying on electric power to get around instead of being taxed to the hilt on petrol and also subjected to whimsical ULEZ taxes when next they decide to move the goal posts and force every petrol car to pay ULEZ charges in London and other cities just because - it’s all about the Money (money, money…!) for them….!!! Thanks for the video review.

Wheel and tire is a strange thing. Width is metric, height is neutral ground in percentage and wheel is in inches. Perhaps it's because tires are bought using sidewall numbers as reference. No need to do any actual measuring. Sunroof, I think they're trying to compare it to screen sizes. Which doesn't require measuring. 64 freedom units, everyone knows how big a 32" TV is. It looks like the designer based the body shape on a car that their 3 year old child drew. I could well see a localised version of this doing well in the UK as there doesn't seem to be much competition where it comes to EV's in the budget arena. Even if it clocked in at the £10,000 price point there is a total lack of competition on the new market (and relatively little on the second hand one).

Those that can legally get on a US highway could be possibly a car class. In snow or heavy rain; they may not see you in your crumpled golf cart until the crows are picking at you on the side of the road.

In Europe, trucks are generally limited to 56mph, and in China trucks are doing about 80kph, so cars like this are perfectly adequate for both city and highway use, though most will live in cities which is where they're best served. I saw one doing over 100kph quite comfortably just a few weeks back. I'm tempted to say the US doesn't deserve small cars because everything is excessive there, but the comments show there are absolutely loads of Americans who just want something like this for their daily life and I feel sorry that they're not being served by the big 3 who only seem intent on sticking gas-guzzling V8s in 10-metre long pick-ups and charging the earth for it. Not everyone in the US lives out in the countryside an hour's drive from the nearest general store. Some just want to get to Walmart or the doctor quickly, quietly, in 10 minutes, by themselves or with a couple of kids, and not have to pay 50 grand for the privilege.

To anyone saying 'why isn't this available in Europe' - well, because it would have a hard time passing the safety requirements, and would score approx. -5 points in the euroNCAP crash tests. There's a reason our cars are so large and expensive - to have a safety cell protected by a good crumple zone, even for side impacts. This Geely is cute and all but you literally can't get it with more than one air bag, on a car that can go (limited to) 100 km/h, that's quite unsafe.

True, it's likely not a superstar in the crash test department, though I'd support cheaper vehicles like this in maybe restricted environments like certain urban roads and with a speed limit. For the speed most people travel and are allowed to travel in a city, the risk level is pretty low.

The Ami is available in Europe, and that car is a death box on wheels.

I never passed my drivers licence, and have been looking into "licencless" vehicles.... there surprsingly a lot! Most look like shopping carts, obviously, but a few are actually nice looking and functional. I don't have much in the way of savings, but I think I'll be buying a shopping cart car soon. There is a serious market for those things. I just wish the designers would stop with the "Box on wheels" look - it costs nothing extra at the factory to bolt on a curvy bit of plastic as opposed to a square bit of plastic. These things COULD look nice, if they too the time to design them that way.

Sure. I think the aim is to maximise the space but sometimes people don't always need or want that.

@@InsideChinaAuto If you're in a 1 or 2 person vehicle... as long as the shopping fits, I'd take style over "Box" any day. Even Smart had a "sporty spice" version...

Thanks for a great review, I want to get one now. One year on after your review how much blood has it drawn from the Wuling Hongguang MINI.

I'd like one myself. Don't think it's had quite the impact on the Hongguang you might expect but I see a few around. I'll get back to your email by the way, just haven't had chance yet.

Something like this would be fine for my wife and I when we retire. Just two people, short distance city driving to pick up groceries.

Meanwhile in the UK this would still somehow be £20k+, manufactures only ever seem to launch these as a concept & then price them at a silly price point
