"A reputable organization" I think you mean: another corporation. There's zero guarantee that they'll be better, or that they wouldn't be *even worse* . Actually, the most likely outcome would just be one of the other big companies buying all their assets and further consolidating the market towards monopoly. Even if they were replaced by another corporation that didn't do this as often, that only solves half of the problem. There's still the issue of agents of the state acting with impunity while completely failing to do the most cursory of investigations. Even if the renter had no receipt and the rental car company had no receipt, it would have only taken an officer a matter of hours to go to the rental location and review some security footage (which I guarantee Hertz has) to see that the customer was GIVEN the vehicle. How often have you seen officers chatting with each other? Or directing traffic? Or harassing random people on the street? Surely they have the time in less than SIX MONTHS to review some security footage to confirm that a stolen car was actually stolen. The insane guilty-until-proven-innocent approach to law where anything a corporation says is gospel truth with zero actual evidence is a problem no matter how "reputable" a corporation or other business entity is.
