I like to rent from Budget, and plan my arrival in the afternoon or evening because they are almost always sold out of the smaller cheaper vehicles. They put you into the next larger vehicle they have available, often a luxury car for the same rate. You can always upgrade at the destination if you wish, but if when they are out of the smaller cars you get that upgrade for free. 😊

Turo is apparently not subject to the conventional rental companies rules. A $126 car on Turo with the subhead: "Total, taxes and fees included," but when you tried to rent it the charge was $165 after "Trip Fee" and tax was ADDED! Like Air BNB, they work by different and not very consumer friendly rules.

Another slightly related hack for Ubers is to take a free airport hotel shuttle to a hotel that is closer to where you want to be and then to take an Uber from there. Usually it’s much cheaper because you don’t have to pay all the surcharges for an airport pickup, plus if you plan it right you can be closer to your final destination. I did this at Ohare airport in Chicago this past week because the airport train shuttle was not running and there were hundreds of people trying to take the few buses and cabs that were available.
@zlauriault5 ай бұрын
Same when we went to Chicago. Unlike Atlanta, Boston, Seattlle, etc. the metro wasn't reliable and it was difficult to find in the airport anyway. We just used Lyft to get to Ukrainian village but staying on the Magnificent Mile there was plenty to do and it was walkable.

Another great advantage with Costco is that you can cancel at any time with no penalty and it's really easy. I often book 5 or 6 months in advance. I then go back every 3 or 4 weeks to check prices. When prices drop for the same size car (and often the same rental company) I simply cancel old reservation and book the new rate. Going to PSP this past Thanksgiving I changed reservations 3 times and ended up saving almost $200 from 1st booking in July...

How expensive depends on what you’re getting, and who you’re renting from. Luckily, all that information is available upfront. We rented a Porsche for a week in LA, and our experience was fantastic. It was pricey, but not appreciably more than what we would’ve paid at a rental company for a regular vehicle.

I had an experience with a rental that got a crack in the windshield while I was using it. I was charged by the rental agency not only for repairs, but also loss of use. I have had good luck using the Alaska Airlines car rental section. The worst has been the Allegiant, which I only used once, as their prices seemed really good, but didn't include taxes and fees! Several months ago, visiting a friend in Montana, when picking up the rental, the tank didn't seem full, so I took a time stamped photo of the tank and the mileage and sure enough, a few miles down the road, I saw the tank really go down, so I pulled over and documented again. When returning with a full tank and receipt, I was credited with a full tank credit. Also, as you mentioned, being nice and polite pays benefits; when my return flight was cancelled, I was able to return to the car company and get a really good price for a couple more days. Thanks for the great tips!

While it can be expensive, if you're not comfortable in the size of the car, I always recommend the extra insurance. I've driven little cars for most of my life and I needed a quick rental, they switched me to a truck at the last moment because of overbooking (I booked a sedan). I told them I was uncomfortable and they ignored it, andI took the insurance just in case. And I needed it! While still being super careful with the car, I did not under stand the turn radius and gouged a foot and a half long dent in the side of it from a tall concrete pole that was at turn corner in a tight parking lot. No cost to me besides the initial insurance. I felt bad, but told them the issue beforehand. All other rentals have been pretty ok though.

Great information. Thank you for sharing. It seems like car rental companies always offer me upgrades because they don't have enough vehicles. But be careful with the updates. For example, we booked a minivan once because we have 7 ppl. They offer us a 3 row SUV upgrade at no extra charge. This seems like a good deal. But while the 3 row SUV also has 7 seats, it hardly has room for our luggage and the 3rd row seats are very uncomfortable. Plus, its gas mileage is much worse than a minivan. Another time, I booked a sedan and they gave me a free upgrade to an SUV. I own SUVs at home and love driving them. But when vacationing, I prefer a sedan so I can hide my stuff in the trunk while parking during the trip.

I had to go through the pain of going through a repair on a rental. It was just a stupid crack in the windshield. Like you said, the credit card is only supplemental to your car insurance. I did make sure my car insurance does carry rental car insurance, so I'm not paying the exorbitant rates at the car rental. The car insurance pays everything up to your deductible, and then the credit card ends up paying your deductible. Therefore, i was out no money, but you still had to go through the hassle of all the paperwork.

As a general rule, auto rental companies charge you by the day. Consequently, if the return time is even 30 mins later than the pick-up time, you will be billed for that time differential as a complete day. The same is usually true for parking garages, while they ALSO charge by the calendar day rather than 24hr clock. Meaning, if you park today at noon and depart tomorrow at noon, you will be charged for (2) days.

silly question, but why would you want to be upgraded? I am ask that question and offered the free upgrade every single time I rent a car of course I always turn it down because when you are upgraded, it's usually a larger car which will cost you more gas to fill it up...... also, I agree with you. I have always videotaped a walk around and look through the car just to make sure I am never charged for somebody else's damage.

I just went back to a rental reservation I just made a few days ago and changed my drop off time to match the pickup time....sure enough, just saved $125 on the rental reservation instantly.

I didn't hear you mention it in this video but how do you feel about pre-paying the gas? My last couple times I rented a car, I pre-paid the gas. When I flew out to Arizona the guy at the rental place told me the gas there was something diabolical like $9 a gallon and he suggested I pre-pay to avoid paying what the gas stations was charging.

Extending your rental car duration is an excellent way to compare and save. However, in practice this is not always practical. Also if you do return the vehicle early, in most cases, you will lose your discount.

Also, if you're renting in Puerto Rico, don't put a deposit down, pay the whole thing off when you reserve. They rented our car to someone else who paid the full amount, while we had to scramble around to find another company.

Many credit cards offer primary car rental insurance rather than secondary. With secondary youll probably have to pay your deductible if you file a collision claim!

Great video. Another question I, have for you. I'm confused. So, does the company called, "Transfercar" pay you for actually transferring a car from one location to another? Or, Are they just allowing you the PRIVILEGE of using the car for the length of time that it takes you to drive the car or RV to the requested pick up location, for the next customer?

Great information. It is confusing all the prices on car rentals. This helps to know how to go about getting the best rate. I’m keeping this video for future reference. Thanks. Would you consider doing the same type of video for booking airline tickets? And maybe one for hotels?it can take me days trying to find the best deal and I don’t really know all the best ways to get deals.

Never assume that the rental car rates that Matt quotes are comparable in different locations, on different dates, etc. The key is to compare, compare, compare. In a remote area near Wilkes Barre, PA, the rental rates are significantly higher than near the regional Wilkes Barre airport - by walking 3 miles to pick up the vehicle (I would never have done this), my friend saved a lot of money. There are also discounts via membership in AAA, AARP and more. And look for coupons, too!

One thing we do is rent a simple sedan to blend in. I like a trunk too, even though I know some can be accessed from the back seat. When traveling to a tropical destination, for example, I never get a convertible or a Jeep. You stand out . Especially in areas where “high theft” signs are posted. Not paranoid but proactive. We like to hike and snorkel etc. we carry around a cooler and other things we can’t necessarily always carry on our person. That simple sedan is cheaper and better on gas, especially when you get to be somewhere for weeks. 😊
