Mom Accuses Sesame Place of Racist Snubbing of Black Girls

Sesame Place is facing backlash after a video shows a character appearing to snub two Black children who reached out for a hug. Park officials claim it was an innocent misunderstanding. They say the motion that Rosita can be seen making is her turning down another mother, who wanted her infant picked up, which is not permitted. Sesame Place says “the costumes sometimes make it hard to see at lower levels.” The theme park also announced they are giving extra training to their performers.

In an article I read by CNN it stated that the person playing as Rosita confirmed they were saying no to the person asking to hold their child for a picture (which is against guidelines.) This performer apparently didn’t intentionally ignore the girls and is devastated at the misunderstanding.” PERHAPS the person in the Rosita costume was struggling to see the small children below with the mask and just continued on with the gesture because the person with the small child was continually asking. But, I could be wrong. I wasn’t there nor do we know everything about this moment. Edit: I am not looking to argue with anyone. I’m not saying the person in the Rosita costume purposely ignored the girls or that she did. I’m just stating something upon observation and from reading articles. I was NOT there nor do I know what was going on prior or what happened after the mom stopped recording. She claims Rosita hugged a white little girl after, but that’s not in the recording. So, I will decide to stay neutral in this situation. Edit 2: I watched another video and I saw someone talk about how the girls looked like they were near the yellow line or passed the line that is there to let people know not to cross. The person said perhaps Rosita signaled no because they didn’t want to encourage crossing the line by making others think you’ll get more attention if you disobey the policy. Another theory I’ve seen is that the lady was asking Rosita to pick up her child but Rosita said no (like I said before against policy guidelines.) The smaller of the two girls looked like she was trying to hug Rosita or was being asked to be picked up which is also against policy so Rosita said no to the two parties who had children wanting to be picked up. Again, these COULD be wrong.

This company is SERIOUSLY on the down-rise. The fact that they displayed a completely VALID reason as to why the kids were seemingly snubbed, they STILL insist that "oh now this could really have something to do with race" like UGHHH. they were giving the most valid excuses, yet try to make it out as something it wasn't. OH and who's to say that the person in the suit was black? Would it have been racist then? or a misunderstanding? All I can do is sympathize with the person in that suit. You can’t see very well in those costumes so missing a kid trying to get your attention, it’s an easy thing to have happen. I’ve seen videos of other black kids getting missed out, but how many white, Asian, Mexican, etc other kids also got missed out on cause the performer couldn’t see them? My kid isn’t black, she’s been passed over for a Native American family. I’m not calling racism, the performers can’t always see the kids. Mine was small, there’s were bigger and easier to notice. The mom is calling racism because the person in the costume didn't high five her kids. What will the mom do next? In 10 years from now when the kids apply for a part-time job at their local grocery store and DON"T get hired, will the mother start calling the general manager a racist? When the kids take their written driving test and fail, will the mother start calling the employees at the DMV racist? Life is full of disappointments/unfairness. Don't let it get to you. Rosita seems to say no to someone else. This doesnt seem racist at all. Besides, I can assume it's not easy to wear that costume, obviously the gesture of no was intended to someone else and carried on while walking next to these two cute girls, but we can't read the body language of the actor because of the costume. Seems like a misunderstanding and an overreaction of the mom. If the actor says it was not racist, why don't we just accept what the actor says?

The character is clearly not doing the gesture at the kids. If she wasn't directly looking down, there was no way she could've seen those two little black girls in front of her. The white girl likely was farther in front and so she was visible. I'm a furry with a mascot costume collection and fursuit of my personal character and I can tell you that when wearing the head of pretty much all mascot costumes you cannot see directly down in front of you unless you're explicitly looking down. Given how close those girls were, the performer likely couldn't see the motions for hugs.
