An average student in school, Mukund focused more on athletics before he got into college. If there was one subject he was good at, it was maths.

Mukund thought he would get into college via sports quota. But one visit to NIT Trichy had him change his mind. As a result, not only did Mukund make it to NIT Trichy, but he also got placed at ITC.
He further went on to pursue his MBA after working for 7 years at Tuck Business School, Dartmouth, USA. From there he went on to BCG, then Zomato. Today he is the Chief Business Officer at Urban Company.
This somewhat funny, somewhat philosophical, and somewhat strategic video is all about his serendipitous journey.
At NIT Trichy, Mukund found himself a part of the famous placement committee. Escorting the newly arrived team ITC for placement season, Mukund was asked by an executive to participate in the interview despite not fitting all the criteria the recruiter was looking for!
Having made it to ITC as a management trainee, Mukund found himself at ITC headquarters in Kolkata. At 21, he was managing his own team at a factory for ITC. But after 7 years at ITC, Mukund decided to study further.
He chose to study abroad because he felt his work experience would not be in his favor at Indian b-schools. As he shares, getting into Tuck Business School was an eye-opening experience. As he tells us, international b-schools are way more diverse and consciously allow in more students from various backgrounds, letting students broaden their perspectives.
But, as he shares further, getting a job in the USA is full of obstacles too! From visa troubles to loan debts, all worked in such a way that Mukund ended up at BCG as a consultant.
As he continues his narrative, a pattern emerges. Mukund doesn’t take life too seriously. But he does have some idea about what he likes and what he doesn’t. His time at BCG allowed him to understand that consulting was not really his cup of tea.
He shares how he wanted to move back to India and work on growing a business. Finally, Mukund tells us how he got into Zomato via an interview which was just a coffee shop conversation. Having worked with Zomato till it grew to what we see today, Mukund decided to quit.
As he shares, when life gives you these hints, take them! Here are some highlights from this conversation:
➜ If you are good at decision-making and have sufficient leadership, team management, and communication skills, you can do well in interviews.
➜ When life pleasantly surprises you, know that you’re doing something right or thinking in the best way for growth.
➜ Managing a team teaches you how to operate in a job pretty fast.
➜ Fake it till you make it big in a professional setting!
➜ I enjoy playing sports is just for the fact that it teaches you that it’s okay to lose.
➜ I have always been open to going to people and asking if I don’t know something and to explain it to me.
➜ When your business is growing this fast (like Zomato did) you always feel you are out of depth.
