Steven Ogg (GTA, Better Call Saul) joins us this week to share his practice of setting boundaries to maintain sanity and the vulnerability he’s able to tap into to deliver dark, emotional performances.
Steven talks about the simple pleasures in his life that reflect his mental health and allow understanding to take precedence over feelings.
We also talk about lessons learned from leads on The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul, the truth to his opinion of Trevor on GTA, and the joys of… farting.

@@guitarman0365 What else has he done though, besides West World and Walking Dead that is of any significance? His approach to the entire thing is wrong. The entire cast of Red Dead Redemption who are also actors will get mad if you call them voice actors and explain just how intricate the process actually is. Ogg just sums up the entire thing to playing a cartoon character, a comparison that is borderline offensive to people that work in the industry. Actors with twice the talent of Ogg were able to do video game voices without diminishing the craft that they were taking part in. If he didn't want the notoriety, maybe he shouldn't have taken a job with the biggest game company in the world.

@fxg4merr
@fxg4merr 2 күн бұрын
@@guitarman0365 He's barely done anything huge besides Walking Dead and Westworld, and a few appearances in Better Call Saul. GTA V still massively outshines those in every way, but he just can't accept it because it's not live action. He needs to be given more film-based opportunities, but that will only come when he begins to accept his persona as Trevor. He didn't used to have a problem with Trevor, the problem was that he expected afterwards to be getting handed role after role by major directors, and that never really happened. So he resents the fact that his most famous character wasn't live action.

@bluesurrealcereal
@bluesurrealcereal 2 күн бұрын
Lol it's not sad because he lived the part...it's sad that you can't let it be and let it go. He's an actor. Just because you see him as something so iconic, he doesn't live that moment every day. Life goes on. I think for some creators, they need distance from being boxed in and reminded of something they did in the past because it limits their creativity. The game is for the fans and players. It's fine. He loves Trevor. But it doesn't define his existence.
@PaxBisonica89
@PaxBisonica89 2 күн бұрын
@@bluesurrealcerealWhat on earth are you blabbering about 😂😂😂 Ogg to this day doesn't understand video games as the biggest platform in entertainment, and he doesn't understand "Trevor" Is one of the most iconic characters of the century in any medium and he doesn't understand it because in his mind "gaming" isn't a linear medium like tv/movies and only appeals to kids/teens. And FYI "you can't let it go and let it be" means you clearly don't know what I'm talking about and making asinine assumptions based on nothing makes you sound like a proper helmet.

Such a great conversation about dark feelings and depression. I go through some of those times as well, but it’s okay. Not every hard day is a crisis. If I stay in it for a week or month then yeah something major is wrong. Luckily with routine, therapy, and in my case medication, I haven’t had more than 2 hard days in a row for a long time. But yeah that description near the end of the podcast of being in those times and can’t feel love, gratitude, etc is just what I feel in those moments as well.

Weird take, but i could see Steven Ogg playing the Joker in any new Batman movie. He gives me that Jack Nicholas vibe with a more physical acting presence with not only his body, but those facials are so on point going from serious to joking to sincere to joking to sinister etc.... Joker doesn't have to be some playboy type to pull a Harley Quinn type bombshell, Joker was never that until Jared Letto... i think you would get a Jack Nicholas crossed with Heath Ledger with a splash of the animated cartoon Mark Hamil Joker. Tell me I'm wrong! 😁

I don’t get it either. People bring up other actors and the characters they play, but just because they don’t mind being called their character doesn’t mean Ogg has to feel the same way. I guess people just expect every actor to behave the same way, when they’re human at the end of the day.

Great interview as always. Michael, any chance we could get Ahmed Best( motion capture actor for Jar Jar Binks) on the podcast? I feel like it'd be great to hear him on everything that's happened and the redemption he received recently.

Great talk, Steven seems like an interesting guy who has a lot to offer perhaps beyond the character roles he has played so far. Hope he gets some more roles that showcase his talent soon!

Steven Ogg is a true living actor and a legend who is not falling into a paradigm of actors or actresses guild of control. We need more actors or actresses like this. Grounded people.

I 100% get why he dislikes being called Trevor. If I played a certain evil mustached Austrian painter and that’s all anyone called me I’d be pretty upset too. Trevor while a great character, is a terrible human being.

It’s funny that he tries so hard to be this deep introspective serious actor, so hard that he shuns away his most successful work with Rockstar Games. Why not embrace it? It’s like those 80s one-hit-wonders that refuse to perform their most famous song…

I don’t think Steven hates Trevor or GTA but I do think he’s sick of being typecast as the antagonist or any type of villainous character, it was also the same reason as to why Michael left Smallville after season 7 as he didn’t want to be remembered as solely Lex Luthor he wanted to do other things and play other characters in his career which I respect it’s the same thing as directors not wanting to be remembered for directing movies in only one genre and who are known for wide variety of them

I get that being seen as Trevor vs all his other acting work, must be a kicker to an actor. The same goes for actors who are in films/games, and it feels like that one thing was their peak, and at times they feel that it was not their best work, but the one thing to always remember is that you are fortunate. There are literally 100,000s of actors who will NEVER be remembered, no matter what they do or how hard they try. To have something live on long after you've stopped acting/passed on and have it loved is rare and fortunate vs all the possibilities that could have been. Steven just nailed the GTA 5 role to the point where he was possibly the main linchpin in a game, a game that has made way more money than any film ever made or ever will make. As an actor, how many can claim to have the love and devotion the gamers have given him. I actually think he messed up GTA 6 before it came out. Sure, it will look better, but I don't think they will catch that magic in the bottle that they had with the last 3 main characters.

So let me get this straight. He doesn't hate the character that he played for a video game, that billions of people around the world liked, but when he got payed to act like that character for a fan of his work, he decided to attack the fan and act like a - hole? I don't see the logic here. I mean, don't you think that, if people like your work then you should embrace it, go with the flow and have fun instead of attacking people mentally and saying "oh I'm not this character, so screw you"? Like, the other two actors who played protagonists for GTA 5 understood this. And they rock with it, giving people what they want and just enjoy their life, so why can't Steven Ogg do the same? What's his excuse anyway??? I mean, that role of Trevor made him popular. It sky rocketed his career and made him famous. Can't he just simply see this and understand this? I don't get it. Also, this is why I live by one rule in my life when it comes to entertainment: never meet your heroes. Because, if you happens to meet them, then it could turn out to be someone like Steven Ogg, who's gonna go and flip you off or get angry on you for no reason, and you get disappointed that you have met the person who were a, at least your favorite actor. Or one of. Thus why I prefer to see famous people only through internet from a distance. And if I see them in real life, I avoid them like they don't exist.

I don't think people are mad that he didn't like being called Trevor.. it's that he doesn't seem to grasp the absolute craze and popularity of the game. His character is an icon, anyone the world!.. 100s of millions of people, maybe billions, love the game and feel connected to the characters. It's not just some cartoon character to them.. if he could just see it from their point of view.
