Pure gold. It took 12 years to hear this story and if not for your efforts, we’d still be waiting-who knows how long? Thank you.

Greatest race in Olympic history. Period. I’ll never forget watching it live at a party, one of my fondest memories from high school

A bit late to watch this but this is quality. I always thought Lezak deserved more praise and credit, sort of overshadowed by MP's glorious medal haul.

Great video. Will never forget jumping up and down on my bed, watching Lezak overtake Bernard at the end. Lezak recently did a clinic at my kids’ pool and let them hold the gold medal. So proud of USA swimming and people like Jason Lezak behind these great moments.

This is fascinating! I had no idea that the order of the French team got changed just before the race. This was such an exciting race. I'm American, so naturally in the moment I was thrilled that the US team won, but it's incredible to hear the story of the French team.

This style of retrospective interview is just very solid and entertaining. Both athletes show such composure and maturity.

What the French coaches did was unconscionable. Most people don't realize how relay teams get in a groove and any changes can have an impact on performance.

Even the best athletes can fail at the Olympics.For me that was the best race ever...and i still can't believe that Lezak made it.

I'm watching "The Greatest Race" on NBC's Peacock Channel now. As a competitive swimmer and water polo player in high school, I love swimming. I live in NYC now but I still dream about being in the pool. There are endless great moments in sports history. There was Secretariat's shattering 1973 Triple Crown records. Then there is perhaps the greatest moment in sports history with Jesse Owens' 1936 win in front of Adolf Hitler. In the world of swimming there is Michael Phelps. 8 golds in 8 days. I still tremble thinking about it. Alain Bernard owned the world record for the 100 meter freestyle. What Jason Lezak did was the "greatest achievement in sports history" in my lifetime. It's scientifically impossible to be a full body length behind the fastest swimmer in the world on the final turn and win the race. Somehow Jason Lezak pulled off the impossible. Every time I watch this race I am gobsmacked. I still can't believe this happened. Till this day, Ceasar Cielo holds the 100m world record with a time of 46.91. Jason's swim of 46.06 doesn't count as a world record because it was on a relay. I bow to Michael Phelps, Garrett Weber-Gale, Cullen Jones, & Jason Lezak. I will never see anything like this again. Also, let's give respect to the French. Smack talk or not it takes defeating the best in the world for history to be written.

This is edited and clipped so well! Hearing both perspectives about the topic in such a cohesive manner really draws a great narrative. Probably your best clip! Shoutout your editor (idk if Swimnerd edits your videos, or if you do it yourself) for making such a great video:) cheers from San Diego

The French that year were unstoppable! Freddie swam at Auburn and was a beast at anchor but the French screwed up bad putting him 3rd in relay if he would have anchored they would have won Gold

I know it was a great moment for team USA, Lezak, and Phelps, but it was such a sad moment that one of the greatest teams of all time was unsuccessful in clinching a gold. Arguably the biggest moment in swimming, that and the 2008 100 fly

I’m rarely willing to give up 18 minutes of my life to watch a video but with Bret I make an exception. You know what observations to make and what questions to ask, and even though you’ve been Inside you don’t make the interview about you. Cheers from Miami.

It sux that they changed the order last minute but let's not forget that in 09 they went back to the original order with Bernard second and Freddie as anchor and he still got smoked by the US and Russia, which was crazy because Freddie was way faster than Adrien and the Russian swimmer. I guess that French relay just wasn't meant to be
@ssiinnaann00863 жыл бұрын
Rome 09 wasn't the order they wanted for Beijing 08, also at the time Amaury Leveaux didn't swam the 100m and got replaced by Gregory Mallet who is a super swimmer but slower than Leveaux and swam 48.27 witch is the slowest time in the top 4 country's. Also Fred was starting the get older and more powerful so the 100m wasn't his best race. Bernard on the other hand was blasting with a 46.4. They didn't win in 09 but they did in 2012,2013,2014 and 2015 also because of the expérience they had from previous years.
@grodrigues13 жыл бұрын
@@ssiinnaann0086 Fred was third in the 100 in 09, bro. He should have won that relay.
@ssiinnaann00863 жыл бұрын
@@grodrigues1 a relay is made of 4 swimmers. For the two top teams (USA and Russia) the slowest guy was Mat Grevers in 47.61, the slowest french swam 48.28 so there's a difference of 0.67 and the difference between team USA and France is ... 0.68. So sure Fred was third this year and his 47.42 is that impressive for the guy but the french team as suffered from they lack of depth because they couldn't remplace Leveaux by a sub 48s when they needed.
