For question, 20 on the extra dimensions, you can make an inference. If FH have to be on the same line, and E and L are opposite lines, that means FHL or FHE have to be a line. Given that D is in portland, and can't be in one of those lines, D and G have to be on the same line and therefore can't be in the same city. So further that leads to two possible situations. FHL/DGE or FHE/DGL with D being the only one we know what the city is. And those are M/V assignments. I might be wrong but that came to me as I see that HF limit that only E/L can be on the same line with them.

Quick thought: with the question at 1:20:00, I think there were several inferences that you didn't show. I think D always had to be a Portland Vendor and F + H always had to be Marketing.
@stevehm5
@stevehm5 3 жыл бұрын
Excellent videos, thank you for your time. For the problem at 1:20:00 the brute force is caused by missed inferences. FH cannot be vendors along with G, or else E is horizontal to L thus breaking a rule. (FH must be marketing) Also, since FH is at the top, you know the remaining spot has to be E/L to respect the E vertical to L rule. You can infer from this that there is no room for D at the top (since F-G-E/L is there, not necessarily in that order), thus D must be the Portland vendor. Knowing these added inferences, the brute force question becomes simpler: G clearly cannot be in Portland since it must be a vendor and D is the Portland vendor. Hope this helps.

Hi! Excellent videos, thank you so much for putting them up. In the "Extra Dimensions" question around 1:20:00, you form the grid under the assumption that each city has one of each role (marketing or vendor). However, as far as I can tell, the question doesn't specify this restriction - it seems possible that a city could have say two marketing people or vendor people. Would you mind pointing out where the roles-per-city rule is specified in the question, or if it's not there, give us some advice about when to assume such a restriction? I know in other cases you are supposed to NOT make assumptions that aren't specified in the question text, but your example worries me that there is a case where either I didn't make a necessary assumption or I didn't catch it from the text. Thanks!
@albertcotugno1419
@albertcotugno1419 6 жыл бұрын
Good catch - my mistake. If it doesn't specify, you can't assume that you need one of each. For the purposes of following the video, though, for now pretend that it says something to the effect of "Each event must be staffed by one marketing assistant and one vendor assistant."

Thanks so much for all these videos, but at 1:32:00, the game is not broken by the H-F rule, F could go in M/R. It's broken by the E-L rule where there would be no vertical spots left for E to be opposite L, but that could also be fixed by swapping D/L which is basically the same as what you did by switching H up to the M row. Not to be nitpickiy, but thought you would want to catch that! Thanks for all the videos.
@insightlsat
@insightlsat 7 жыл бұрын
Hey there - actually if you follow carefully, I was only saying there that if I try to put H in V-Q, we then see that G has to go in V-R, and that leaves no room on the bottom row for F, which needs to be in the same row as H. Since I didn't need to make the move of putting H in V-Q, I just backed it up after that and went in a different direction. My goal there is to try to put the conditions expressed in answer choices A and C into my diagram without betraying any of the rules. If I can do that, both A and C are not the right answer. The tricky part is that, if things go wrong when I try to do that, I won't be able to know right away whether A or C messed it up. I'd then have to try both individually, which can be inefficient. That's why I called the technique "risky."

1:35:22 G has to be a particular type of assistant. F and H also have to be the same type, not necessarily G's type. However because E and L are different types of assistants, one of them will also be grouped with F and H. This rules out F and H being the same type as G. put differently, G and D MUST be of the same assistant variety. That CANNOT happen if G is assigned to Portland. But all that is assuming each city gets one type of assistant which I didn't get from the initial text lol

Easier way to think of the first one. Make worlds! If P or T has to be in Wax make two worlds. One with P and one with T and fill them out with the rules as much as possible. Same for Yes being either T or U. You only need to make 3 worlds. world 1= P in Wax and T in Yas. World 2= P in Wax and U in Yas (this world will be completely filled out with all 7 elements). World 3= T in Wax and U in Yas.

@insightlsat
@insightlsat 6 жыл бұрын
Remember that the question is asking you to find something that MUST BE FALSE. That means wrong answers COULD BE TRUE. I'll give you the solution in a moment, but just on your own try making D true. Put P and S in W and try to place the rest of the elements without betraying any rules. It will work out fine, and that means the answer choice does not need to be false. --- Anyway... hope you were able to do that yourself, but here's the solution. P and S go in W. This brings in Q and U, since we have PQ and SU chunks. Since we need either T or U in Y, we need to choose T, because U is already in W. All that is left is K and M. And we need to have two elements in Z, so both K and M go there. So we're left with (W): PQSU; (Y):T; (Z):KM. Every element is placed, no rules are broken. D can be crossed off.

@@carltonpowers In the question overview it stated that "Each event is staffed by two volunteers". This helps us to draw the inference that there were only two locations for the six volunteers to go. We then can draw an inference from this because each of the six volunteer had to be trained as either a marketing assistant or a vendor assistant. We can make the inference that at each location there must be one m and one v because only two volunteers could work at the location. I hope this helps.

I think that our reasoning is correct in this very specific case because there were only 3 spots for each and every spot had to be filled and there's no doubling. But in general, it may be dangerous to make this inference. The next question (the ingredients) actually showed me the flaw in our reasoning regarding game 2, because in the ingredients game (game 3) if K is in then G is in, and if G is out, then K is out, but it does NOT necessarily mean that if G is in K necessarily has to be in or that if K is out, G has to be out.

I had one question while doing a practice test. It said something like: There are 7 employees, A, B, C, D, E, F, G. One will get the raise. Here are the rules. Wait, what? I didn't have a clue how to set up the diagram for that!

The diagram for the extra dimensions is not finished from the start. G must be under V leaving 2 spots. 1 of those 2 spots must be either E or L. Leaving F and H to be under the M category. That’s why it was harder to figure out. Once you take that extra step all the questions were easy.

G under Vendor doesn’t leave 2 spots for V. The question did not emphasize the volunteers had to be 3 vendors and 3 marketers.

You missed an inference. F and H cannot be in the vendor row because G must be there, If you had those three in that row you could not do the E - L rule. F and H can only be in the top row (m) with either e or l, nothing else

at 1:37:37. E and A are both right answers. If L is in Portland Both E & L would need 2 be in portland otherwise that would break the vertical relationship of E&L. No? However the rule states that D must be in Portland????

Sure. K brings in G. That does not mean G brings in K. In other words, K is sufficient to have G, but K is not necessary to have G. In even MORE words, lol... G is necessary to bring in K, but G is not sufficient to bring in K.

Because if H is in Westlake, you can still have 2 possible assignments. T: EGF W: HLD or T: EGF W: LHF F can be with GE in T. The rule says if F is in W, GE has to be in T. H doesn’t conclusively determine that.

1:53:30 Hybrid Sequencing and Sorting I'm not sure if you pointed out explicitly that the order of the interviewees on a given day doesn't matter (i.e., their arrangement within a vertical column), and I'm not about to re-watch half an hour of this video to confirm that, but it's an important thing to remember if you're using the "framing" strategy. I spent about 20 minutes racking my brain and shouting at my laptop that there are more than 3 possibilities to arrange the letters (i.e., F can be in any of the 3 positions in the 3rd column) before realizing that it doesn't affect the outcome of the game. Feel free to make fun of me in the comments. I'm sure I'm not the only one though.

For the main example at the beginning, why couldn't W have P/Q and Y have U/S? Why does T have to be in one of those? It doesn't state that T MUST be in one or the other - just that it's an either/or scenario with P/T in one category and T/U in another category, so why couldn't T be in the final category, Z?
@bryanarnold155

Great observation, tom actually could be booked at Z. He is just writing P/T and T/U to let you know they these elements can not be booked together. T can be with M&K at Zest. If T is booked at Zest then you know P must be booked at Wax and U must be booked at Yas. Hope this helped

55:30 - fixing number sorting - (E) also fills the positions in , why is E not the answer but (C) is ??!! - if h is in westlake then g in t and and e in t, if e is in t then f is in W. Putting D in T
@kk-qy4sh
@kk-qy4sh 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, I think this may help you understand why E is wrong. While H being in Westlake would make you put G and E in Terry, you cannot assume that F is in Westlake. The rule is: if F is in Westlake, E is in Terry. The contrapositive to that is: if E is not in Terry, F is not in Westlake. In other words (considering that there is only two group options, some books call this the "limited options rule"), if E is in Westlake, then F is in Terry. If E is in Terry, you cannot infer based on the rule and its contrapositive that F will be in Westlake. Remember you can't assume the sufficient condition from the necessary condition. Thus, placing H in Westlake would not complete our diagram. G and E would be in Terry, but we do not know if D or F could fill the final two slots (remember, the rule does not say that E and F cannot be in the same park)! Hope this helped! :)
@rowdy5583
@rowdy5583 5 жыл бұрын
Basically, when a rule goes one way (when F is in Westlake, E is in Terry) it does not mean (E is in Terry, F is in Westlake) A contrapositive does not make something Opposite, it means it (Could be) opposite.
