This is easily Christopher Nolan's most underrated film. I love this movie and genuinely believe it's an amazing film. A little slow paced which is likely why it's underappreciated, but it's in my top 5 Nolan films.

Just saw it (in my own pre-Tenet tour of the Nolan filmography). I still have some Nolan films to get through but I gotta say your review does ring true. That Insomnia doesn't go into typical Nolan high-concept mode means it's more "approachable" / less mind-bending, but it's still more subtle and thoughtful than most crime dramas (though perhaps that should be seen as primarily praise for the mostly non-Nolan screenplay). Still: you nailed it by describing this as a good example of the great skill Nolan brings even as a director-for-hire. I hadn't realized the parallel hefore, but since I'm also going through Villeneuve's pre-Dune filmography, it struck me that both Nolan's and Villeneuve's first "Hollywood" movies were really well-made crime dramas. Though Nolan has been making films for longer (through which he has for some reason acquired a - to me, undeserved - reputation for making "cold" films), this is one of those that shows that he too can make the kind of deeply mood-intense, emotional and psychological works that I most enjoy in a film.

Insomnia is such a gem. It takes tired subgenre of world-weary detective movies and makes it fresh. Several scenes are iconic, especially the chase in the fog. Controversial as my opinion may be, I enjoy Insomnia more than Memento, Dunkirk, and Inception, but less than the other Nolan pictures.

I agree that it's not the most memorable, but it's still a solid, extremely well-done movie. It definitely feels the least Nolan of all his films. Like Memento, I've only seen it once, but plan on rewatching it to see if my initial impressions were correct (both films are great, but don't have the most rewatch value).

The big reveal at the end about Kay Connel's death is TOTALLY NOLAN. To me, that's one of the best moments in his films. Presenting a snippet of an idea and expanding on its meaning in nuanced ways.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen this, so I’ll try. This is criminally underrated. Granted most of his other films are better, but it’s Nolan...anyways, it has so many good plot points that make this movie incredibly thrilling. This was one of Pacinos last great roles, and he is so attractive as an antagonist, and Robin Williams is a chilling villain (RIP). Hilary Swank isn’t the greatest, but she’s fine as she should be. However, compared to his others films it doesn’t have something that makes it too distinct. Overall it’s a very good film. 9.75/10

Insomnia is great! It's super compelling, very well acted, incredibly well shot, and incredibly well written! I think this movie is getting slept on! It's so good and I just watched it last night! I love the simplicity of it, believe it or not! Not every great movie needs to blow my mind. It just needs to be really well made and compelling, which this movie is. Great Nolan flick in my opinion!

I watched Insomnia for the first time last week and I genuinely enjoyed it. Pacino was at his best, Williams was great, although not as supreme as in Good Will Hunting or Dead Poets Society. I loved the concept and the writing. I think the greatest scenes are with the two leads talking. I would give it an 88%,I think it's great, but still my least favorite Nolan film (I haven't seen Following, where can I find it?)

When the detective was writing down the address on the back of the novel. It did not give the apartment number. How in the world did he know exactly where to go? It was just the name of a town, no street address. No apartment number. Huge plot hole.

Insomnia is a remake, but honestly it's better than the Swedish film. In the original one the detective was a sex offender creep, and much less likeable. The killer looked like stereotypical bad guy. And Hillary Swank's character is far better (and central) character
