If anyone complains about the blanket on the front door then they can send you lots of money. I had a house where I had to staple three blankets on the door and then crawl through the bottom to get in and out.

Put some radiator foil behind the radiators! So the heat will reflect in to the room instead of warming up the wall behind it. You can also buy special ventilators to place on the bottom of the radiator, so the heat will spread faster.

For the ceiling cold, once you get the attic floor and attic ceiling totally insulated and whatever boarding to put on the ceiling and floor and the new roof will help. When you get the drainage fixed outside that will eliminate the walls absorbing moisture and staying cold. Same for the basement floor. Once you get the front porch door on that will really help too.

you han mount a thick insulated curtain above the door. Once you are inside, you can pull it over the door. If it is long to drape on the floor even better. then just pull off to the left when you leave or in the summer... Just thinking out loud. Great to see you two.

I know that (at least in the USA) that there is a plastic window film/sheet that can be put on on the inside of home over window walls or frames that reduces cold entering home by at least 50%, sometimes more. I can't recall it's name but it worked well when I lived in North Dakota. I also would use heavy bath towels as curtains during winter as well to help keep my very old house warmer. Cold walls would get a "blanket window protection" as well.

Our Hydro company does this test for heat loss. Windows doors antics as well. Nice to see this in action. Some spray foam might work in these minus temps.Surprising that a wool blanket can stop a draft. How about putting heavy plastic draped in the new porch door opening. It would make a big difference.❤ Frozen eggs are great for baking. RememberYou still need some air exchanging indoors during winter. 😊 great video!

If the blanket is pure wool it will give you great insulation. The cotton towel won't give you good insulation. I do snow shoeing, and to keep my feet warm I only use wool, no cotton socks. What a difference between wool and cotton socks. Also if cotton gets wet it stays wet where as the wool doesn't.

Hubby and I put up an old comforter between our kitchen and sunroom. The sunroom has 9 windows, a sliding glass door, a small flight of stairs, and the back door. We were really hot when the sun shone in, and freezing in the winter. We are looking for a bi-fold door for the opening between the kitchen and sunroom but haven't found one yet. In the mean time the comforter is fine, and I don't care what it looks like, so long as we're warm!

Why don’t you put up a temporary door on the mud room entrance? That will give you a few degrees from the outside temperature and if that is not enough at lest it will be a wind barrie. By the way I really enjoyed seeing ur home through the heat camera. Please do it again when you make changes. If ur up for some observations: I like that you have been posting more videos. BcMore videos = more viewers = more money yay And then hopefully the KZbin gods will feature you more. A lot of channels I watch have been going to the daily videos, I think it has benefited their channel enough that they have continued it for more then the initial 1st month.

COnsider the square footage of your floor. If the entire floor is cold (9C floor compared to your walls at 18C) because of an unheated basement, I would advise you to insulate your floor from the basement. That is easy to do, It is a huge area and if your feet are cold, you are cold. Insulate the basement ceiling (or the underside of the living space floors as your first priority. You can do this now. All of the leaks at your living space ceiling are between the wood board ceiling and the outside wall. My suggestion is wait until warm weather and buy a two part spray foam kit. With the kit, you can go around the entire perimeter of your board ceiling and spray a nice wide band of closed cell foam to seal the openings. When the foam is cured, lay your existing insulation back down over the foam. I believe you have a guest bedroom you do not use regularly? Put a valve on that radiator so you can turn it down to a trickle when the you do not have guests. Add a radiator in the hallway. Don't suffer with the cold. Also, heating that space will make your wood stove more efficient. By the time the hot water makes it back to the stove, you want it to be room temperature. You can not fairly evaluate your main door until you finish your airlock entry way. The second priority is building/installing an exterior door for your airlock entry way.

Is there a way y’all can hang a heavy blanket at your door while you are inside and not going in n out to help keep the cold out. I guess I thought that at the same time as y’all saying it. Is there some weather stripping that you can get to go around the outer part of the door to help seal it a little more when you close it to help keep the cold out until you rebuild it. There’s also these long rolls, I forget what they call them, that you put down at the bottom of the door to keep the cold out.

Regarding the front door. Have you considered adding an extra board to your door frame to widen the door stop. This could be done on both sides and the top and would allow you to add a good thick strip of weather stripping to eliminate a lot of draft. If you weren't concerned about the tripping hazard, this could also be done across the bottom.

You could add PIR insulation panels inside your house. They also work as a vapor barrier. It might not need any extra framing and is a very good insulation even in thin form. You could for example use 3cm PIR panels and put drywall or some other material on top of them.

I have a suggestion for you, at the front door- exterior you might want to put up some 6 mil plastic sheeting it will help with the cold air. You could also use the sheeting around the areas that are really cold ... windows and doors, etc... here in the States you can buy it in clear plastic or black. Another suggestion would be to invest in some silver bubble wrap but that can get costly and the r-value is only around 2 but you could always double it ... if it was me I would make a frame and either staple the 6 mil plastic or the bubble wrap to it and place it in your windows or even use it on the exterior door. Also, you can use that bubble wrap up against the floors between the floor joists and then you can add regular insulation to that but the bubble wrap must go up against the floor first ... then the insulation. Keep the videos coming! Love your videos ❤ Stay warm ... Cheers from Pennsylvania, USA.

Would adding another glass frame inside or outside make a difference on windows? Wouldn’t the it trap the heated air from escaping? Just asking so I can learn more.
@TheLasze
@TheLasze Жыл бұрын
Usually modern windows have 2-3 glasses already with vacuum between, which does what you describe. If you just add another window, it will probably be difficult to make airtight enough. If it is not airtight, there might be condensation between the windows. Not an expert on the subject, and someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

If you install used windows, they might be already faulty. Usually, the glass packages start leaking gas and become faulty. If you can insulate house walls from the outside, always do so. If you can't do so because of the restrictions, do it from the inside. Your lock is nice, but in a subzero climate, you need a special no thermo bridging lock to avoid cold passing through. The floor insulation is important but you would have to rip the floor, dig the dirt out, put in insulation and make a new floor. Maybe an undercarpet with carpet flooring would be cheaper and would make it feel warmer...

I wondered about that too. Deivids answered that in this video. They want to replace the inner door and frame , when budget allows, then move that door to the porch extension. For now, a roughly made door would help immensely in keeping things warmer this winter if put on the extension.

When I was young we had a coal/wood burner in a room under the house , ( dad built onto the 200 year old 4 room house that was insulated with newspapers and paper bags ) .the room was to small to be a basement . My father built a cinder block chute for the chimney pipe to fire proof the pipe and exhaust smoke about 15 ft away from the house .He laid cement blocks around the entire house and a cement plaster over that to stop heat escaping from under the house He cut holes and used floor vents on the floor and our house stayed toasty .there wasn't any ash or saw dust in the house it was all downstairs in the cellar room . I suppose you could put a fan down there also to help the heat rise . It sounds complicated but my dad and 3 brothers had it finished in less than a week . The only bad side is he had to go outside to put wood or coal in

Your windows are so cold, because they are not finished. There is NO plaster arround them like there should be. Don't pour building glue, cement, beton there - it is cold, it does transfer heat better than plaster and or wood (parapets). You need to have plaster there, and parapets. Foam isn't enough. I have same windows, only double glazed, room temperature is 21*C, window - glass 19.1*C, plaster 17.2*C, plastic part of the window 18.2*C. Measured by laser thermal pointer.
