He’s easily the greatest pianist that I’ve heard. I couldn’t believe the sounds that he could get out of the instrument. After a Babayan concert, everyone goes to the practice room, regardless of how late it is.

You described Sergei Babayan perfectly. Fully agree with you. I just saw him in a performance today in Valencia Spain.

It was my privilege to see Sergei Babayan and Daniil Trifonov earlier this year in a 2 piano recital. It included both Rachmaninoff suites for 2 pianos.

Although I am not a classical player, I have subscribed and watched your videos for your tips and insight on playing piano. Your advice and the way you communicate it is the best out there. I don't play classical, but I love the way you play and your sound.

I used to love to watch him play when I was in Cleveland. Agreed that he paints with as wide and varied a palette as anyone. I always thought of that head tilt as him listening intently while in "The Zone", enabling him to reflect and adjust in the middle of the performance. I miss hearing him live.

Babayan‘s method of ’take‘ is the best technique in piano, solving all problems like tension, acceleration failure, missing or wrong notes, weird gesture.

There are so many great pianists out there at the minute it’s hard to pick one for me. I personally don’t like to see a lot of facial expressions like for example Lang Lang, who is a great pianist by the way. Everyone to his own, but I liked Horowitz personality at the piano. He once said the expression came from within him, “it’s all inside here” he said, pointing to his chest, and didn’t do the facial expressions. The Russian pianists do take some beating though and I can understand why Josh likes Sergei.

Your intention is honorable ,however, first half said precious little...Josh... yes music has melodies, and unlike wind players and singers, pianists don’t need to breathe but the music does. In order to share Babayan’s hints play more specifics excerpts to illustrate how a melodic line comes alive using dynamics, touch and breath as if you were a singer..🌸

Mr. Wright, excellent video! I'm a young pianist who's just finished high school, and am now applying to colleges for piano performance. Are you on the faculty for the University of Utah? God bless

Different pianists can move different people...I find Zimerman's playing cold for example. I like Rosa Tamarkina's approach to Chopin although she was able to record very little.

Hi Josh.... I think you didn’t quite go over the humming after all? (Mentioned it wasn’t a Glen Gould thing but that was about it). Can you possibly cover this a bit more because I’m dead curious about it. I’ve found I tend to hum... more and more so in fact... think I perhaps picked it up (as indeed you do 😜) from one of my teachers way back when... 🤔

What makes you think Babayan is the greatest living pianist. A truly absurd comment considering the like of Argerich, Perahia, et al.

He was trying to talk and play at the same time while looking into a camera. I'm a teacher and if I do that with something hard like Rachmaninoff, there are wrong notes. I missed a note in Faber level 1 today because I was talking and looking at a camera for online lessons!

Dont ever imitate pianists' face expressions or gestures. They are doing them unconsciously and if you try to imitate it, you are going to look pathetic. It should come very naturally-not something you want to imitate

While you tone and technique is quite admirable, my one suggestion would be to avoid constantly playing the bass notes directly before the RH melody notes. This was a fashion from the early 1900s. It starts to sound mannered after a while and we begin to eventually lose the directness of communication in the playing. Notice how even in my rendition from many years ago, I ever so slightly offset the LH with the RH melody but NOT all the time. It should be used very sparingly nowadays as it is considered an old affectation. Cheers!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5LYhXSuo7yXo7c
