Confession: I own Syllabus but have never "used" it. I pick it up and read it (random pages) but feel intimidated to try the exercises. Seeing that someone actually worked through the exercises is inspiring and helpful. TFS

Hi Vicki! I worked through the book, journaling in the formats she presents and doing the exercises. It was interesting to me to "see" and notice things around me that would make my writing more interesting (even if it is just journaling). You should give it a try!

Thank you for reviewing these incredible books! As of now, I only have Making Comics, but when I first saw it I fell in love. I thought "I wish I had created this!" I love all the replicas of the old medieval drawings and her squiggly monsters and her neat handwriting interspersed with all the collage. Besides loving her style, I found her exercises actually helpful in my endeavor to learn to draw beyond stick figures. That adult voice that says "You can't draw" is so hard to shut up. Her exercises help to do just that so that you can exercise your creativity in a free child like way.

You introduced me to Lynda Barry in one of your videos, and I absolutely love her book, Making Comics. I borrowed it from the library and I think it's her best so far. When my husband gets a job, I'm going to buy that one and these three that you showed us. Thank you so much for sharing.

Have any friends in the us? Basic Composition books here can be as cheap as $0.50 depending on the time of year (like back to school) or they have fancier ones. You could have them sent to you.

Thank you for the review and for sharing your journals with us as well! I look seeing other people's sketchbooks and hearing about their process. I love Lynda's books. I've started doing her exercises based on her books and by watching her tutorials on her website. I like listening to her voice and having a sense of human presence. I also really appreciate her style of working and the fact that she explores the different feelings and experiences from her childhood and growing up. It feels very honest, and gives me courage to exploring my own history, even the confusing or challenging parts.

I love Lynda Barry. What's wonderful about your comp book, Melanie, is that I bet each one of those pages that were the daily exercises will bring you fully back into that day. That's what I noticed, doing her style pages. This video was a treat. I have her books, Syllabus and Making Comics, but I can see I do need to own Picture This.

I sometimes feel I’m not doing my journaling right because I’m just writing sentences but I get what her books will do for me. Seeing, hearing feeling and putting it down. Her style can be replaced with my style or help me find my style.

Observation, for me, is the key to my daily writing. I go sit outside in the morning when it is still cool here in the desert and close my eyes and just LISTEN to the sounds of the birds, I feel the air moving, I feel the cool breeze (NOT IN SUMMER!), and I write. I'm going to put this book on my "wish list".

Oh boy...thanks so much for this video. I’d come across her book Syllabus in a linked video. I’m a decorative journaler. I’d gotten too much into the added paper and tapes and embellishments, and want to get back to just paper and pen/ink/paint. I think I’ll need to get this book. I didn’t know which one to start. I think I’ll start with Syllabus!! Can I ask which mediums you did use? Which markers did you find bled the least?

I homeschool my kids 10-16 years old. I’m curious if you think this would be to grown up for kids to do with me or if you think it could work? I don’t have any of these books but I’m definitely interested in getting one or all. If you think it could work may I ask which one you think would be best for kiddos? This is exciting 🤪 thanks for sharing!!!
@MelanieSullivan2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michelle, I glanced through these books again and I would not personally suggest _Picture This_ or _What It Is_ for pre-teens. They both seem more aimed at adults who want to reconnect with the creativity they had as children. Without getting too specific about why, I'll just say there are probably better options out there for kids. I would have had no problem with letting my 16-year old read and work through _Syllabus_ or _Making Comics_ . Some of the imagery can be a little dark, literally and figuratively, and Lynda depicts herself as a cigarette smoking monkey or Sasquatch. (There's a lot of cigarette smoking depicted in both books.) _Syllabus_ and _Making Comics_ are highly similar, but _Syllabus_ might be more about keeping a written journal and _Making Comics_ is more about drawing and keeping a visual journal. They're both highly inspirational and you could easily use them to create your own 'lessons' for your kiddos without sharing the actual books if you preferred. I hope that helps!

I think the one I was referring to was Cartooning: Philosophy and Practice by Ivan Brunetti. It's a very small paperback book, but if you're interested in cartooning (or even telling stories), it's a fun little read.

Hello, I wondered if you think the Picture This book is suitable for an 11/12 year old who is interested in art?
@MelanieSullivan5 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Picture This is definitely targeted at adults. There's a lot of discussion about freely we drew as children and tapping back into that creativity as adults. Barry's character, a monkey, smokes cigarettes (although she talks about how bad they are) throughout the book and many of the illustrations are quite dark (literally and figuratively). Honestly, I think there are better books out there for kids interested in art. One of my favorite drawing books for kids (and adults) is The Usborne Pocket Artist. It's a fantastic little book! amzn.to/2nKHTUd Hope that helps!
