I am so thankful I had a grandmother who thought there was not gospel group as good as The Inspirations. She would play their records and just cry and praise the Lord. Then my mother began to listen to their records, so I cut my teeth on the greatest gospel group there has ever been. I now sing some of their songs for specials at church and one of my most request is Two Shoes. I don't do it as well as they do, but I get blessed just singing.

Mom used to put their record on and I would listen to Mike sing "He Gave Me Water" and wish that I could sing like him.... alas, it wasn't meant to be. LOL

thanks for sharing this there was a time where work was scarce and times were tough and this song carried me through, the version I had then was one the Inspirations did for the little ones and Mike did the whole song in that ultra low range which gave me a chuckle that i needed almost as much as the message itself sadly some of the Brethren believed they had the gift of discernment that allowed them to judge the heart according to the quality of a specific note and they didn't feel Mike's vocal fry passed the mustard and declared the life and ministry of the Inspirations hypocrisy (irony not lost on me) and the guy who ran the channel got so discouraged he took down all his gospel and replaced it with old country. the moral of the story don't spritualize your likes and dislikes and if you don't have anything nice (or at least constructive) to say keep it to yourself.Wow I have wanted to get this off my chest for a long time thanks

Pastor Mike does a lot of vocal fry. He’s a good bass without the vocal fry.

Agree 100 %. Some mics like the Neumann KM series can buzz enough that the vocal fry sounds believable. Not the case with these mics.

Troy Burns sang lead during this time, not Ron Hutchins. Ron was hired as the baritone in 1985 after Jack Laws left again and stayed until 1988.

Mike Holcomb is the reason i wanted to sing bass. i used to have a southeren gospel group (The Gateway Gospel Singers ) i miss it a great deal ! but NO GROUP IS AS GOOD AS THE INSPIRATIONS !
Mike is great. I love his voice. But he had a tendency to do the bass part TOO low. Like in this song. He’s frying the whole song. And it can take away from the main attraction of the song. He would sound much better if he sang an octave higher.
