Well you sure inspire me, I am a UK viewer and I gave you thumbs up, subscribed and rang the bell. I am retired from working for a living, so now it's play time and I just love working in my shed. worked in some great shops but now I'm confined to about a quarter size to what you have. Every single storage issue you have solved has given me solutions to problems I face every day, I have to cart things outside to get room to work inside. As a result I have more awnings than a field of weekend campers. Thanks for sharing. It reminds me of an old saying I used to have, " in order to learn first you must teach". I taught a couple of apprentices and it feels good that you are teaching me. By the way I am 66 years old and more enthusiastic about wood work than I have ever been, and your lessons make that so. Thank you very much.

Not only did you expand my own ideas, concerning french cleats, but you telling your background of getting there, is priceless to me. In 6 to 12 month i am starting building my own shop and your video sort of polished some of my ideas and added quite a few. Especially the kabinet with paint and what not, inspired me. Thank you for your very informative videos, i always enjoy them.

The idea of having French cleats in various areas around the shop is genius, but just seems so obvious now. I love it! It would be so handy to grab the holders for your drill, drill bit, and screws and hook them to the side of your bench...or have a holder for safety equipment you could move between stations...the options are unlimited. It gives full flexibility to customize a work area based on the current project.

My shop I have just expanded. It was so small I had stuff on top of stuff and couldn't keep it organized no matter what I did. So with this new addition I started searching all the sites that talked about French cleats and organizing. Yours helped me the most because of the variety of challenges that you faced with walls, windows etc. Your vid made good sense. Last note. You don't talk too much I can leave the volume up and don't have to listen to a bunch of funky music.

I know this was 4 years ago, but it’s loaded with brilliant ideas! The magnetic box for the back of the bandsaw table is great, and your paint/stain/solvent storage idea is genius! The crown jewel for me was putting a vise on the dresser! Might have to add one in our bedroom! Ha! Thanks!

sorry i had to pause :59 in ... i did the same thing in my garage! i have a small space heater in the other side with storage racks i built to house all the totes and my small music studio. keeps the heat in the one side and the dust out. i used magnets and duct tape to create a door that snaps shut behind me. also hung a piece of plywood on hinges to conceal my seasonal decor and have poster/art hanging space. lift the door twice a year to get to those totes. love your vids, glad i subscribed. i dare to say, great minds think alike, im just getting into this woodworking passion and youve truly given me some excellent tips to connect my visions with my toolset.

Ingenuity at it's finest. You took the French cleat system to a whole 'nother level. I especially love how you integrated it on your assembly table. The Paulk-style table allows you to keep things off your work surface, but it has the potential for being a catch-all area and quickly becoming cluttered if you're not one to stay on top of things. Your system keeps things organized and movable and still within reach. It's just brilliant. You have given me inspiration as I start to create my own woodworking shop in my "corner" of our garage.

I had to laugh at the ending about playing with the lights. A while back I was moving and it was hot so I had the air on and cranked down. Like I said, I was moving, so naturally the doors were wide open also. My mom was helping us move and she kept shutting the air off because the doors were open. I got a little upset and asked her why she was doing that. She said, "Well, you're just wasting electricity by running the air with the doors open." My response was simply, "Remember when I was a kid you said that when I get my own house I can run the air with the doors open, but I can't do it in your house? Well, this is my house, I'm running the air with the doors open." She punched me. LoL! Yeah, my mom is feisty like that. Hahahaha! Thank you for the shop tour. I too and working out of a 2 car garage and sharing it with storage. The more I clean it out the more my wife finds to store there. LoL Your set up gave me some good ideas.

Well doggone you Jody - you made me LIKE and.....wait for it.....SUBSCRIBE. Seriously, your shop reminds me of my own. You made max use out of the limited 2-car garage space you have to work in. The biggest take away for me is your extreme use of French cleats. I use them for general adjustable storage, but you took it to a new level, and I'm gonna plagiarize the heck out of your idea. Brilliant! Next, I'm gonna dumpster dive and grab a bunch of board and practice your Shou Sugi Ban. I watched your on that and got a lot out of it. Such a great idea with the cleats I'm definitely going to be stealing this. Only improvement I can see is that it might me nice to have the table top overhang the cleats so that the cleats don't stick out from the edge. It would make it just a little harder to hook things onto the cleats, but it would be cleaner looking.

I have seen about 1,000 videos showing the French cheat system and yours is one of the better ones out there, I really like how well you utilized the space you have and made it effective. Maybe after another 1,000 videos I will get it through my head that French cleats are the way to go and Ill actually do this myself. The cleats on your work surfaces is a great idea, move what you need to work closer then move it back when you are finished. Great stuff.

I had a very similar idea awhile back. I hadn't seen anyone use them like this until I seen your video. Great work. My idea was going to try and design a modular workbench system where each bench is connected via french cleats. I could also have tool holders and whatnot too. There would be a main bench with cleats on each side then connected to the cleats I was thinking of purpose built worktops. A few top ideas I had were a router table, grippy/downdraft table for sanding, or even an easy to clean surface for when I need to stain/finish/paint. I could probably come up with a bunch more ideas too. I never really got around to doing anything with my ideas. I started drawing up a design on the computer but I never finished. My current bench is nothing special, but it does the job for now.
@InspireWoodcraft5 жыл бұрын
I really like the concept of different work stations and what-not. The only thing that would take a while to engineer is the back support for the cleat system. In my experience, French cleats don’t work as well the farther out the weight gets. But they’re amazing for sheer weight.
@jronmanplays5 жыл бұрын
@@InspireWoodcraft The plan was to have legs, adjustable in height, at the opposite end of the french cleat side of the workbench extension as to add extra support. I was also going to experiment with the idea of having each top use 2 rows of cleats for extra support on the cleated side.

I had considered cleats for a mobile work table in the middle of my small shop, but adding small tool caddies is brilliant. Thank you. And I am so excited to find someone else with a radial arm saw. I just found this video and it is great. I have played around in my garage for over 20 years (I say played because I don't really consider myself a true woodworker). As far as your issue with electrical plugs for your tools, when I first got my stationary tools. I installed plug outlets on my bigger tools. These outlets are fed from the plug feeding power to the machine. This allowed me to "daisy chain" all my tools together so I have power available at any time. It also made plugs available close for when I want to run a saw or router. You just have to remember to only have the tool you are using running to keep the draw from exceeding the wall outlet you are feeding the tools from. Works fine for me, thought I would suggest.
@InspireWoodcraft6 жыл бұрын
You know I thought about doing something like that because the bandsaw has an outlet on it already and the radial arm saw has to be plugged in with its own separate switch anyway. Great idea that I actually forgot about! Thanks!

Well, I certainly got inspired by you today! You came up as a suggested channel for me. I am so impressed by you, your shop and the energy you put out that I subbed. Really well-done video and the editing and sequencing are top-notch. I have watched many, many shop tours. I've always believed that you can improve your shop and builds by sharing ideas with others. And boy, did you give me a bunch! I like the FC system much better than peg or slat walls which I have at one end of the shop above the built-in bench that came with the shed. My shop is a winterized 10' x16' shed. It's expensive to buy and replace the hanging accessories and hardware that come with those types of walls. My plan is to remove the bench & slat wall and use FC instead. This same side of the shop has a loft above which gives that area the right ''cozy'' feel for a small work station where I can sit down and carve spoons and bowls as well as boxes and gifts for others. The idea of having the removable bins on the side of the work surfaces is brilliant. And your hanging cabinet for paints and stains is very clever, especially the latching side. There's a nice friction fit which I like. John Hines in Canada built cabinet years back for the same things but I believe it included the glues too. At the bottom of the cabinet, he incorporated a bare light bulb that stays on during the winter. That 60-watt bulb generates enough heat to keep the contents from freezing. That is a big problem here in New England too and I lost a lot of glues and stains that the first winter. It works well too! I did the same thing to a small cabinet like nightstand I have on wheels that contains my overflow of the same items. look forward to your content and enjoying your channel. Thanks!!

I love the french cleat idea! I am in the process of doing exactly what you have done with your garage. My experience has brought me to the realization that an inexpensive way to put benches, saws, drill press on wheels is to use one, or more, furniture dollies. They hold up to 1000 pounds - none of my moving carts weigh that much. Wheels are very sturdy and less expensive than purchasing the caster wheels separately. Just attach the unit to the dolly securely and it rolls just fine. A long 6 foot dresser (old furniture is great for a workbench with drawers!) uses one dolly on each end and it rolls around easily.
@InspireWoodcraft5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for adding this bit of info! I tell people all the time to buy furniture dollies even if it's just to take the wheels off for something else. Individual casters can add up way too fast!

Very nice job organizing. I feel your pain of trying to organize a small space for your tools. For your garage floor, I have had some good luck with single stage epoxy. Pressure wash and scrub with a cement cleaner, apply cement primer, then multiple coats of single stage epoxy. I used the Behr variant from HD. Two coats have held up well to food traffic. I pull a car in for oil changes but I imagine car tires would eventually tear up the epoxy as it's not as durable as the two stage stuff.

The cleat system on the work table is a great idea! I'll have to try that on my table for drills and fasteners as well. The plastic wall is great too. I did something similar but with a white tarp which has a board attached the length of the bottom. I'm able to roll it all the way up to open up the shop or drop it down to keep most of the dust and clutter to one side. Bonus feature, if you put a bright light or two on the opposite side of the plastic, turn all the other lights off, then you turn the wall into a huge soft light source for finished photos/video. ;-)

Nice shop and great use of space. Hope you don't mind but I am going to borrow your French cleat idea at the work stations. I am actually building a new mobile cart/assembly station for my saw stop and the idea for the moveable storage modules is a perfect fit for my space. Thanks again!!! Mike

I love French cleats too. I've been making prototypes for the new setup after we move. It is going to be cleat city in there. I even made some for screws and such with little plexi windows in the front. I cut off the label from the box and put it behind the little window. Works great. Nice job on the shop.

Fantastic setup! I get 1/2 of a 2-car garage for my shop. Still in a state of chaos. Your system provides many storage ideas. Thanks man!

Thanks a ton. I do plan to make a video on the storage cabinet but I want to make a few revisions first to make it easier for people to make, and have plans to go with it for those that could benefit.
