A luxury trunk build - this project is Part 1 (the exterior) of a 2 Part video (the interior) and is inspired by the gorgeous Louis Vuitton Trunk - Courrier 110 Malle.
Materials used - 10mm poplar plywood glued and nailed cask, pink oak slats, oak base frame with aluminium plate, solid brass nails (riveted or clinched), solid brass closures, lock, corners and corner angles, coated checkerboard canvas exterior, luxury goatskin leather border and edges, thick bridle leather hand stitched handle (with edge paint) and concealed steel opening hinges.

Not sure how many times I’ve come back to rewatch this. I restore antique Louis Vuitton, Goyard trunks so I’ve done all of this individually. I’ve learnt so much from this one video. It’s filled in a lot of blanks I had of the techniques. Is this work? Hobby? Cheers. Darren.

Hi Darren, thanks for your encouragement - it's just a hobby for me but I have been woodworking and leatherworking for a long time now....how interesting that you restore trunks - is that enjoyable work? Yes trunk making is harder than it looks - the workshops in France start with pre-drilled leather and plywood and will have access to the right tools and materials which was certainly not the case here but I managed to end up with something fairly close I think and I am really happy with it...warm regards

I was tempted because my friend is black and she is often asked if her bag is fake. People just immediately assume they are. Even though I'm white, I still get people asking me if my bag is real. So I thought why should I spend so much money on these bags? So in the end I chose to buy it at *condup* . Even if it is not the original, some replicas can have special emotional value because they are connected to specific memories

I’m so sorry that I didn’t get this video come up for me sooner. It combines my 2 passions - woodworking (been doing that for over 45 years) and fine leather work (10 years?). I have made quite a few pieces in homage to brands such as Hermes for family and friends and found the real difficulty in finding the right leather, hardware etc. Luckily, I found a guy in HK and the quality of his stuff is first class. I’ve got a feeling that a trunk might have to be made!

that's so interesting - and glad you enjoyed it - I enjoy both too and have also made quite a few items for family over the years with recycled bag leather etc. The hardware link in the comments - this one - www.malle2luxe.fr is a very good supplier of solid brass trunk hardware - he speaks English - the designs are his own but they are elegant and very high quality. Bon courage. Warm regards...

Funny. What you are calling banal chitchat, is to me much of what would make this a more instructive video. Things like what is this tool called. Why this tool ( why a drill press for some holes, vs the hand powered drill, or the cordless power tools used) And generally a why of this project that is producing something too heavy for a carry around bag, and too small to be luggage. None of that is mentioned.

@boreoff

Hi there, thanks very much, are you referring to the trunk borders? LV doesn't use leather, they use a canvas or for the borders they use something called Lozine which is a vulcanized fibre. Both can be sourced - have a look on Etsy for some good quality 1mm checkerboard canvas. I used French leather for the borders which I think is nicer than Lozine. Hope that helps...cheers and bon courage with you project...

Hi there, thanks for watching, it took a fair bit of time but it's a hobby so I am not counting, maybe 30 hours on the build itself but additional time researching, sourcing materials etc ....also filming it added some difficulty and slowed me down!! cheers

What about all the nail points protruding into the case?? Beautiful on outside but dangerous internally

there is a narrated video on my channel where I discuss this and other aspects of the build if you are interested but I clinched or riveted those nails...no health and safety issues hahah

Do you mind sharing where you were able to get the coated canvas? I'm trying to find some in plain brown but can't find it. I also have the same question about the brass hardware

@ thanks, I did come across the French restorer. That’s where I’ll get my hardware. Did you happen to get the fabric from them as well?

I looked up the trunk inspired by it. It might be blasphemous to say that your trunk looks better than the original.
