I love this quilt top! You just can't go wrong with black and white with some color thrown in! Beautiful. Now I have to make one, wait a minute...I've got a layer cake purchased, way back, that I can use - Blues & greens that are very modern looking. Yep! You're right DiAnn, B&W are wonderful to work with and this accent fabric is perfect. It's bold on its own plus the background is B&W, too. I think that's what really set this one off so well. Pick a fun fabric for your quilt! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

I heard you say you are a fan of yellow and navy; I am getting ready to quilt the yellow and navy checkerboard border of a wall hanging I’m finishing this week. Perhaps you can help me! The yellow is very bright but warm. I cannot find a thread color that doesn’t look harsh on the yellow, other than a yellow. But against the navy, I’m not sure if it looks too white. In fact I’ve tried palest grey, palest beige, and purple. Again, this is a pieced CHECKERBOARD border. What colors would you suggest I try?

Good question, Judy, though not an easy answer. Most any color will create contrast for one or the other fabric. One choice is to find a variegated thread with both colors. This will make all your quilting stand out. Or, have you considered a transparent filament thread? It comes in clear or dark and I'd suggest the clear to keep it less visible on the yellow. It's very easy to use and works great with a regular bobbin thread. I'd also suggest at least a size #12 needle so there's not too much stress against the thread which could break it. I've used this on many quilts with great success. Let me know how it goes. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

Could you add one additional color to each stack and not have a duplicate square in each nine patch. I'm guessing this would change the quilt size

Absolutely, Kimberly! Just layer 9 fabrics instead of my 8. I simply chose that b/c that's the fabric I had to work with. You'd come up with a couple extra blocks by doing it that way. Just remember that each layer of fabric will equal how many blocks you end up with. This quilt technique has received a lot of interest, so I may do another with lots of random colors. There are some fun layouts for this that would work great. I'm already thinking about some different options so watch for my next video! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

Hi Susan, my quilt backs are made from the same quilting fabrics as the quilt top. I'll often have some extra blocks or strips left over and will use them for the backing to keep it interesting. For my middle layer, I prefer a low loft batting as it's easier for me to machine quilt. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
