I love the quilt, but especially the binding you put on it!💕

I previously made a 3 layer rag quilt as you've described - it's wonderful! However, it is very heavy for Arizona weather. Do you think 2 layers of flannel will be too flimsy, or equally nice but lighter weight? I've got the strips cut, but am tempted to only go with 2 layers of fabric.

If the sky blocks are too large…by even a smidge….you will get this unwanted tongue. I use Deb Tucker’s Wing Clipper as another viewer. I get perfect results every time. It is a combo of sizing and nudging in a hair. Love your geese!

the slotted triangular geese ruler-template prevents skewing of fabric because one side of goose triangle is longer that the other base side. TIP...when sewing the wing like triangle to the goose MAKE SURE the goose base triangle AND wing base triangle are evenly above each other with edges straight then sew the side to the goose.. You will find in the trimming up of the finished block the bottom across the threee pieces of the whole base is straight and not bowed or skewed.

for those of u that would like or need a larger than a 1/4 inch above the beak...the slotted flying geese triangles ruler-template allow u to easily square up larger side triangles AND/OR to use already other larger cut orphan triangles as wings. IMPORTANT to remember is to make sure the bottom base of the goose n triangular side are evenly over each other before sewing up side seam. Do NOT let the bottom base matchings slant away, keep them straight on top of each other. Then using the slotted ruler for squaring up SIDES of goose block FIRST because the bottom should be straight not bowed or skewed...then free ruler rotary cut the horizontal top to desired 3/8, 5/8, etc above the beak. The trims are just slivers AND also, if you have pieces of odd scraps small or larger, its easy to cut a geese from an odd shape scrap. Sounds complicated but it is easy, once u try it a couple of times...this gives you consistent accuracy and more leeway IF 1/4 in above the beak is NOT enough space to keep u from sewing thru the goose's beak tip.

Some great tips to solve a little 'dog-eared' problem. Love those orange/purple/green geese at the end. With a dark centre square in the 9 patch, it really emphasizes the small pointy 'beak' of the geese 🥰

Thanks to Carrie for the question and Lea Louise for the answer! This was really interesting, and I guess I never realized how to make the correction. Flying geese blocks are one of my favorites and I'm now in love with using the disappearing nine patch. How fun is that. 😍

The fabric in your video is so pretty! This is such a good quilt pattern especially for beginners but so great for old quilters like me too! I'm getting to the point in my quilting life where I just want uncomplicated projects that turn out well. Thanks so much for sharing :)

Using Deb Tucker's wing clipper and her "nudge" helps to handle 1/4" problem.

That tool makes perfect geese’s every time. The nudge is essential.

I never press seams open, except on flying geese. They lay so much better and have less bulk at the tip. I was a tailor in the 80's/90's, learned to rip seams with a razor blade too! 😂

I’m confused about the math. Wouldn’t just cutting a charm in half give you 2, 2 1/2” pieces and the rows would come out even but off set?

I learned this technique from my MIL long time ago. But I do it even easier. Cut one square exactly in 1/2 and add 1/2 half to odd rows in the left side, and 1/2 square to the even rows on the right side. After sewing all rows will be equal ( you know… more or less 😉🤪)
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise2 күн бұрын
Great tip, Gigi! Then we can take it one step further by adding 1/2 block on the end of every row as we chain stitch. The simply flip every other row so they alternate sides. The beauty of quilting is there's always a way to make it work! Sure appreciate you following along. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
