Sonic Origins uses Mania styled insta shield which doesn't give you the extra range of Sonic 3&K and the invincibility frame is slightly delayed so you can land on spikes right after insta shield and don't take damage for a really short time.

I just realized that some of modern sonic's mechanics are based off of classic sonic's, that one swing thingy in mushroom hill is those poles you can swing on, and the insta-shield is just the parry

Fun Fact; Sonic’s Insta-Shield move isn’t necessarily a shield. There’s no protective barrier around Sonic so it’s nowhere near a shield. It’s more of a parrying instinct-move Sonic-3 has. Sonic only uses it to hit his enemies when THEY have shields or objects flying around them for protection. Or he can also use it to hit enemies that are further away from him, not allowing him to reach them and hit them normally. For example; Eggman’s machine would be further up into the air, the Insta-Shield allows Sonic to hit Eggman’s machine when it’s further away. The only reason why Sonic is able to take no damage when hitting a harmful object while using Insta-Shield, is because it’s supposed to parry it. Like think of it as Sonic being the one damaging the object, not the object damaging him.
