I wish instagram could go back to being about pics only… like we already have KZbin and TikTok it’s soooo annoying. Regular pics went from 400 likes to like 40 smh with this new algorithm..

It’s not like reels are any popular.. they’re even harder to get a reach. It’s all views and less likes compared to picture posts. You can have like 500 views with 10 likes on reels. And theres people with biases intentionally not liking your reels because they feel like it’s “unfaithful” to their allegiance to tiK tok. And it will never makes sense to me that there’s a reels tab yet reels spill into the explorer page with the regular picture posts. Like why?

When I had both the "inspiration" tab and also "content creators like you" tab in the professional dashboard, it showed conflicting stuff. In "inspiration" the stuff shown was like content I post. But the "content creators like you" I had over 90% suggestions that had nothing to do with my content. Hence that was a bit of a wake up call for me as towards why my account was doing so badly. It showed part of IG was mislabelling my content (even if other parts were getting it right).

I love how your way of working with your free content as an introduction to your paid content sounds actually very effective. Yo make the audience work a bit, to their homework and come back to you to get more. Keep going.

One thing I wish I had more control of with "breakthrough viral videos" is to have the engagement be more localized to my region and not just all over the place. For example on a page I run that's located near Toronto, Canada, a video went semi-viral but most of the views were from Africa. While I'm grateful for the engagement, it would have been nice to see more of it in the Toronto area.

If you had a video pop organically, you should change the CTA at the end of the video and run it as an ad! Target the exact area you're looking for. I'm sure you don't have an issue with traffic but wanted to throw it out there! - Chandler

That can be a real problem. Had it happen to me. Gain 10k non engaged foreign followers . I tried removing them as they came in but it was too much. Finally I removed the post. Next time I'll turn it off sooner. Sucks, I spent years trying to go viral and when I finally did, this happens! 😆 smh

Idk Dom, This past 30 days Ive got videos doing normal traffic and engagement, with over 50% views from non followers but each day I actually (net) lose 20-30 followers. How am I still reaching non followers but not adding new followers??? The only thing I can figure is that it’s now showing content to more random audiences not likely to want to follow my niche. Make sense?

Suggested reels are also based on what you watch. I do watch a lot of Romanian funny reels and that's what shows there.

It’s been tough for my account lately. I was about 100 followers away from 120,000 and now I’m lucky if I get 10 to 20 new followers per post but I’m losing more than I’m getting and it makes no sense.

Okay, this Inspiration thing is totally bogus at least for me. Because I looked at it with my cat account, which has like 150,000 followers and under the Inspiration tab, there was NOTHING with cats in them except for two cat accounts that my account is friends with and who have like a 10th of the followers I do, and their videos have a lot fewer views. And literally this account is 100% cats 100% of the time. The hashtags are 95% cat related and there’s not even any humans in the videos!😂 so yeah, really not working here.

thx for the infos dominik!! i have a question about the issue with suggested reels in the inspiration tab (6:02): it doesnt match my content at all, but i usually use the same hashtags and i got my account for 5 years now. i notice a similar thing when i scroll through reels, suggested reels dont really match my content while the search page matches my content pretty well and i wanted to know if maybe not only what you post matters for the suggestions but also what reels you like and watch the longest? should i be super mindful about which accounts to follow and what content to like?

My issue is that my reels seem to be doing well and then they just plateau. Like everything is going great, I'm getting 5-10 likes per minute and then it just stops? I don't understand why. One of my reels is stuck at 48k and the other one is around 560k. It makes no sense cause the engagement is fine too.

I have quite understood Reel algorithm and stories too. But I still have to explore and test the photos, my Reels can reach to a bigger audience if i post strategically but my Photos haven’t made it to the explore page yet. Wondering Does photos require Saves and Like more ? 🤔

I have amazing statistics (around 1000 saves in the first 24 hours, over 6000 likes and around 200 comments), my reach is always 15-20k. So I don't believe my content is not good. Moreover, when theme pages with less followers share my content, it goes viral. The algorithm is already favouring small creators, it has been like this since the Tiktok breakthrough. The thing is when they reach 100k followers it starts taking their reach away from them, just like it does to us, bigger creators. I have proofs of what I am saying and the famous quote 'your content is not good enough' is simply gaslighting

So as a photographer, who doesn't do reels, how can the Inspiration match what I do? It only recommends reels. So no, it will never match what I do 🤷‍♂ Also, I had been doing the around 5 hashtags strategy for at least the last year or so. Based on your recent video, where you said using the same hashtags over and over again could have negative effects - and I use #animalportrait on almost everything, because that's the core of what I do - I tried a week without hashtags. For the recent, like you recommended. But it feels like both things simultaneously really had a negative effect, because reach plummeted within that week. As always with IG algorithm changes, there's nothing other to do than power through. But if recommendations are solely going to be based off reels again, that's a big middle finger again to those who don't care about them.

It's normal. They probably pushed out your first post to more people because you're new, but 1000 views is a LOT for an account with no followers and no posts. 60-100 seems more reasonable until you grow.

I'm a photographer who posts half naked alt girls. I haven't had Instagram do anything but punish my account day and night anyway. All my growth has been word of mouth. Instagram has been a fight since day one for me.
