I have a ton of outboard gear but I started in the 90s so I had no choice but to buy the stuff I have. But if I started out today I would not have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on consoles and outboard compressors and EQs. If I started today I would have a powerful computer the fastest interface on the market and I would spend my money where it matters most MICROPHONES, INSTRUMENTS & MONITORS. If I really needed outboard gear I would have 500 series boxes with what I needed. Spend money wisely studios aren’t about the gear because on the radio no one can see your studio. It is about giving your clients a better product than the guy with the fancy studio pics on instagram.

I was literally thinking about this yesterday. A lot of my IG search recommended is laid out studios with so much stuff in them. Although it looks great aesthetically, it reminds me of having hundreds of VSTs! Awesome to look at, but not necessary. Great for efficiency to have your go-to stuff on every mix. Then the other side of me wants it all 😅

Honestly, as a studio owner just starting out, "instagram studios" bum me out. I've watched videos of people telling their audiences "if they have (enter cheaper product here) don't even touch that studio!" or "If they don't have a (enter extremely expensive product here) its not worth using them!" like I get it, we strive for providing the best sound quality as possible. But my prices reflect what we can do (we're cheaper than most of the market and are trying to build up cliental and equipment as we can) and we have a killer drum setup and sound. It's just very frustrating to encounter everything online basically telling me I can't succeed unless I have 10s of thousands of dollars to go into debt to pay for (enter products here). And I can't wait to prove them wrong by making kick ass music even though we have a 7b and not a (enter expensive mic here).

If clients don't wanna come to your studio because you don't have a U87 or some other super expensive piece of gear, then good. Those aren't the kind of people you want in your space. They should come to you because the work you put out is killer and you provide great customer service, not because you use expensive tools. Ignore those online influencers and have fun! ✌🏾

We did a test in our studio the other day with 6 different microphones. 3 of them were super high end (ranging from $2k to $5k). Every single engineer on site that day preferred the sound of one mic in particular, and it was the 7B. It's a GREAT mic

@@avationmusic We love our 7b. Its such a great sounding workhorse of a mice that we put on anything and it just sounds great going through our BLA 173. not that it needs a fancy preamp to prove itself! We just like the character and saturation it provides which means less processing later on

A video idea (a really brave one): track and mix a little demo song and make two versions (signal splitting, a lot of work, but that's what'd make the vid cool): one with stock/free plugins and tracked directly into the computer, another tracked and then mixed through analog stuff. Then compare. THAT would be epic

Hey Colt, thanks for the video! Question. How do you use the same hardware compressor (Tube Tech) on every vocal? Do you bounce down the vocal after finding the right settings and then move on to the next? I'm new to using external hardware and the amount of info out there is surprisingly sparce. Would love to see a video on how to do this kind of stuff with external hardware. Keep making great videos. Have a good one!
@ColtCapperrune
@ColtCapperrune Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! So, if it’s a song, I’m tracking/producing, I just record every vocal through the tube tech. If it’s a song, I’m mixing, I will put the tube tech as a hardware insert on the lead vocal. If i’m mixing a song, I didn’t track/produce, and I need to process more than two vocals, then I will Print those vocals through the tube tech, so I still have that flavor. Hope that makes sense!

I still have my Alesis NanoCompressor & Belari MP105. They were some of the first pieces of gear I bought when I started home recording. Upgrading the opamps help. I keep them for nostalgia mostly but they do impart their own sound. I have acquired better gear over the years but I still like having these old pieces of gear. Honestly I don't really need more preamps or channel strips or compressors, but I do find myself wanting more gear. For what I do at home I have all the gear I really need.

Your studio is magnificent. You make an excellent point about only keeping what you use and what you need. My own home studio is quite primitive. But it serves me well and I can accomplish a lot with it. Sometimes the limits we are faced with amplify our creativity. Look what the Beatles did with Sgt. Pepper and what Jimi Hendrix did on Are You Experienced? - and they only had four tracks.

There is an elephant in the room and it seems that it needs to be addressed. What is the reason that no one ever addresses capturing the sound to be mixed? It seems that everyone is always talking about mixing however no one wants to address capturing the source material to be mixed. The piece of gear that is always used in our studio is the room as well as the basic physics of sound which the room helps to take care of.

I’m curious what percentage of your time/days are spent creating content vs. selling your recording/mixing services to actual clients. Some big youtube producers like Beato still have big home studios with tons of rack gear, amps, guitars but they don’t make any records. All he needs is maybe a pair of speakers in the background. Hell even that could be green screened. What I find peculiar about the recording studio folks turned successful content creators, is why they still muck about in such a niche/broke industry when they’ve proven that they can be a successful on-camera salesperson (a valuable skill which if applied to other industries could earn them much more). I think the Six Figure Home Studio guys realized this at some point and pivoted their content to go broader (as all around marketers).
@chazguitar
@chazguitar Жыл бұрын
The content here is GREAT for guys like me, so your critique, veiled as a question (“I’m curious”) is beside the point. Even if I don’t have a ton of gear and even if I’m serving my small local market, understanding these pieces of gear and the techniques behind their use is both educational and useful.

Fellow “nobody” here… saw your question about the HPs. I’ve been very impressed with the Audeze LCD-X. I use them for mixing, and also when i’m taking in music for pure enjoyment at my desk. Best way ive been able to explain the sound: feels like a pair of monitors attached to your ears! I little heavier than most of the newer lighter style open backs, but worth the trade off for me. Here's a rule-of-thumb I believe works: Take a piece of paper and list EVERY paying client you've ever had. Number that list 1, 2, 3, 4 . . . etc. Now count ALL the units in your outboard gear rack (excluding Power Conditioner and Interface.) So - if the number of your gear is more than the number of clients, you may be buying too much stuff too soon. Face it - today's DAWs come with enough [great] emulations of Compressors, EQs, Reverbs ad nauseam - if you're just starting out? . . . psst - that's all you need . .. learn from that free goldmine of plug-ins. Then, when you've secured enough income, and you've just gotta have that Fairchild - knock yourself out.
