Do you have a switch in your bedrooms that controls a plug on the wall? Builders do this to save money, but it isn't really the most convenient set up! We show you how to add a ceiling fan to a bedroom that has a wall switch that controls a receptacle (the proper name for a plug). You can make your plug hot all the time or leave it on the switch with the light. The fan can be controlled by the pull chain and totally independent of the light. Get it working how you want it! Find out how here!
Warning: You'll need some former wiring experience. This is not a wiring coarse, but we show you how to get this job wired.
Whether you want to install a ceiling fan with a light or just a light, you need to get that wall switch to control a light in the room. Watch it to find out how.

Excellent video. I need a switch at the wall that has one switch for the light, one for the fan, and one for the receptacle. I think it's a similar procedure, but if you have such a video, please provide a link. Thank you.

That's a very specific application, so I don't, but you can apply the principles and methods that I used here to make all of those wires switched.

Thanks so much for posting this! I have done a lot of basic "remove and replace" electrical projects, but never installed the wiring myself. I was a bit hesitant to try this until I watched this video. I was able to install Hunter's Fanaway ceiling fan with confidence. It would have helped to see the wires spliced together before the switch was reinstalled into the switch box, but the explanation beforehand was adequate. Definitely the most comprehensive instructional video on KZbin! Thanks again.

My house built in 1984 is the same way with the exception of the master bedroom and no one ever connected a light or fan to a box that was installed in the ceiling, but never used. I installed a fan with light in the master. The other two rooms still don't have a light on the ceiling. Eventually I'll add one.

Thanks for making this informative video. I plan on adding a fan in a room wired just like this room, the switch powers a plug and there's no ceiling light fixture. My good friend is a seasoned election and I plan to have him do the job, at a generous discount of course. It's still nice to know what he'll be getting into. I feel much more informed now and could probably do the job myself but I think it would be wise to let my friend who's a professional do the job. I want him to kind of check everything out for safety anyway as this is a new house purchase. I will be able learn more from him, help him fish the wires and maybe next time I can do it myself.

Great video and information. I have the same exact situation in two rooms. The only issue I still had was the wiring at the switch. I was still confused on how to wire the switch. But I found a real simple solution at Home Depot. I found a electrical switch which is called Decor Two Single Pole Switches for 10 bucks. It takes the quess work out of figuring out how to wire the switch. One switch for the fan and one for the outlet. I also found a neat bracket for the fan if the joist in not in the center of the room for 16 bucks. After looking at all the stuff I need it will cost about $100 to set up both rooms not counting the ceiling fans. 50' of 14/3 Romex, 2 electrical switches, 2 fan brackets designed for fans, fish tape and small bag of electrical nut connectors. This video showed me a whole lot cheaper and easier way to add a fan than hiring an electrician for a simple job. Thank you very much.

Great Video. This was exactly the scenario that I have to work with, and the explanation of the three way wiring to the wall outlet will make the job far less intimidating. The hardest part will be fishing the new wire from the old switch to the new fan box in the ceiling. But, where there's a will, there's usually a way.

Thanks! Super helpful video. I've done a lot of this separately before but this puts everything together and is especially useful because I am starting with a switched outlet. Mine is a double switched outlet. On another note, as someone who's pulled about 10 miles of ethernet/phone cable, if you're worried about needing to re-fish a hole, put a loop in a string that youve tied to your fish tape, bend the end of the wire into a j, hook the loop, and tape about 3-4 inches down the wire where it doubles back on itself. You now have a string running parallel with your wire and if you ever need to pull a cable again, you just repeat the process so you always have string in the wall. Works with conduit too.

My house built in 1984 was ceiling fan ready, meaning they ran the wires and switches to control a ceiling fan and light in the living room and master bedroom in case someone ever wanted to connect them. No one ever removed the painted and textured cover and installed anything. When I removed the cover the boxes were cheap plastic. One of them broke removing the cover. No way was I going to install a ceiling fan on those things. I removed them and installed metal boxes. I installed fans with the light kits and control the fans with 4 speed wall controllers. I like being able to control the fans and lights independently and not having to use the chains at all. My other bedrooms only have switched outlets like these with no ceiling lights or fans. Someday I'll do this, but I want to change out the switch box with a double and be able to switch the fan and lights independently. I like a hard connection, don't care for those remotes.
@Homemaintenancesolution

Yeah, that's no problem Billy. you just need to get two switches and connect the red and the black to a separate switch. Then one will control the fan and the other will control the light. www.houserepairsyourself.com

We have a very small patio. An electrician attached a box to the center of that patio ceiling, and it was exactly on that wooden stud. He also attached there a small box (Steel), which is sitting on a couple of screws. His idea was that because it is attached to the sturdy wood it will support the fan. I doubt that box is sufficient for the heavy fan. I could change the box, but my question is how to attach any box to that stud? Maybe with some braces (going around that stud), if there is not much space for that thick rod on which the box is sitting. Or the box for the heavy fan (which is 48 in Havana, Hampton Beach) should be located between the studs only, so you can install the supporting rod? Thank you for the film.

Next time cut the 14-2 and 14-3 in the ceiling and put a jb, could have 3 returns off the 14-3 going down to the switch, added another lighting scheme in the room, and splice the constant hots to (or from) the 14-3 to the plug, no drilling or fishing 😉

Someone else mentioned this but I have the same question: In your situation, why not install a junction box in the attic? Couldn't the existing wiring then be reused from the box to the attic and eliminate the need to fish a new wire through the wall? Very good video - thank you very much.
@Homemaintenancesolution
@Homemaintenancesolution 7 жыл бұрын
You could do that, but 2 reasons why it might not be the best. 1. You probably don't have a 3 way wire coming out of the switch box. 2. Junction boxes in the attic are legal, but usually hidden and difficult to trouble shoot if a problem arises. Best to you!

We have a recessed light close to where we'd like to hang a chandelier. The electrician we hired said there is no support to hang a chandelier; he'll need to cut holes in the ceiling to find wood in the crawl spot (first floor ceiling; 2-story house) on which to attach the ceiling box.
@mwarrick8669
@mwarrick8669 9 жыл бұрын
***** The recessed light will provide a way of wiring the chandelier; we just need a way of supporting the weight in the spot we'd like the chandelier. Is there hardware designed to do what we need?
@danielwood8778
@danielwood8778 5 жыл бұрын
All that would require is a small inspection hole first, in the location proposed for the installation, locate the joists with a flashlight then use a expandable rodded box that would be placed against two joists. These are usually referred to as a braced ceiling fan mounting box.
@danielwood8778
@danielwood8778 5 жыл бұрын
Oh, also you already have the hole cut in the ceiling for the recessed light and that would probably as good a spot as any to change the purpose of that hole for your chandelier. Since that hole would still be larger than you need for a standard fixture box you would either have to close up that opening with a drywall patch or cover that extra wide opening with a medallion or what is sometimes referred to as a daisy ring

I live in a small apartment, and management has given me the "okay" to install a ceiling fan in my living room (no light fixture or power to the ceiling). I've got the same issue: the light switch next to my front door controls the receptacle below, which I have a lamp plugged into. My apartment has it's own circuit breaker, but does not have access to an attic. My apartment is the bottom-floor of a three-story, two apartment tall complex (the apartment above me is a two-story dwelling). All of this being said: is there any way that you could give me an idea of what it would cost to hire a licensed electrician to do this kind of work? Management will not do any of this, so it comes out of my own pocket. Thanks! Again: very small apartment with low ceilings. I'm not sure if this factors into the price, based on the amount of work needed.

@Homemaintenancesolution

Michael, I'll look for an opportunity to shoot that. The issue that comes into play on that is that every situation is different. You will end up having to cut a hole in the drywall in a couple places to drill through the floor joists until you get over to the joist space that you need to be in. See our videos on patching drywall on our channel. Thanks!

Im in a first floor apartment with concrete ceilings. I have no lights but an outlet controlled by the switch. Im thinking about wiring the fan with a plug and running the wire down the outside of the ceiling and wall with some wiring trim to make it look nice and clean.

John, that sounds like the best solution, in your case. Good thinking!

@@Homemaintenancesolution I just looked into it I'm going to have to replace the outlet with the actual wire molding Outlet because it has an opening on the top to receive the wire molding so the wires can get to the back of the outlet without trying to go under the original outlet cover

Why dont you use gravity and drop a small chain down from above and take a wire hook to snag it below and pull it into the outlet box? Then use the chain to pull the Romex cable!

Why don't you just add a junction box in the attic, cut the wires going to the outlet, then reuse the existing red wire to run to the light? Seems more logical, but I am not an electrician, and I have no idea what is the correct method.

In a certain case, it can be important. Code requires metal boxes to be grounded. Thanks for the comment!

Thanks for this video - this is exactly what I'm trying to do in our house. Question for you - if I wanted to keep the top outlet across the room attached to the switch (as well as the light in the fan) could I just leave that red wire that was originally attached to the switch in place and add the new red wire for the fan light, or can the switch only have one red wire coming from it? Thanks in advance!
@Homemaintenancesolution
@Homemaintenancesolution 10 жыл бұрын
Pete, sorry I didn't see this comment yesterday. You are exactly right in what you said. Yes, you can leave the red wire to the top of the outlet connected. You aren't allowed to put two wires on a screw terminal, so you will want to nut them together and bring a "pig tail" wire to the terminal. Best on your project!

Aaron Ransom Yep, if you don't have an attic above, then you will need to cut a channel of drywall out so that you can drill through each joist to get over to the joist bay that you need to be in. After that, it's matter of doing the patching. We have videos showing drywall patching as well. Best to you!

msiddi01 You simply need to switch both the black and the red wire. Don't connect either one to the hot source in the switch box. Hope that helps! Please subscribe to our channel if you haven't already. Thanks!

@Homemaintenancesolution
@Homemaintenancesolution 10 жыл бұрын
Sean, you simply need to connect the black wire in the 3 wire cable to the fan switch instead nutting it in with the hot wires. Make sense?

Thank you for your video. It's pretty straightforward. I do have a question though, is there any drawback to using a higher rated gauge wire than you need? Like if I was really worried could I go double what I need or would that cause issues? Thank you!
@Homemaintenancesolution
@Homemaintenancesolution 7 жыл бұрын
M Marrone, mostly no. The basics are that it costs more and is harder to work with and fit into the box, but the only significant one is that it COULD decieve someone in the future into installing a higher amp rated breaker, especially if it goes back to the panel.
