Late comment, but I wanted to say that not a lot of foreman or tradesman (in general) will stop and teach like this. Of the years I spent in trades I've never had this kind of mentorship and I think this is exactly what's wrong with its culture. We don't have servant leaders like yourself to help lift others up in their knowledge base. The cycle repeats and we don't produce quality workers; we reap resentful ones.

I was so lucky when I was younger, I guess. I labored for a lot of contractors, many took the time to teach me bits here and there. After several years of this, I learned a lot of trades. Not to the extent you will learn, but enough to get my own work, and build a good business. I hope all you new generation of contractors all have steady work and happy customers. Good luck

I literally could not agree more with this statement!! This is the kinda mentality of training/mentorship that should be a requirement for ALL journeyman that have a green apprentice. Just saying, that the amount of time and money it would save the company in the long run. Cause “Common Sense” is something that isn’t so common these days.

The single most detrimental problem at the company I work for. Now they are stuck with a bunch of inexperienced green first-year apprentice has and even second and third little about why or what they are doing. The company is struggling more and more because of this. I personally can't wait to find a better company to work for.

I’m a 41 year old commercial GC. My work ethic has always been strong. I’ve only had 3 FT & 1 PT jobs since graduating HS, and haven’t been unemployed at any point, since starting to work at 15. I’ve worked my way up to management at every job ( excluding the electrician job ), and have never been fired. I’ll give context to the reason I brought up my resume, at the end. I did 2 1/2 years as a residential electrician’s apprentice from ‘99-‘01 ( I was called a house mouse. Not sure if that’s still a thing lol ). During the building phase, I did grunt work ( loading, unloading the van, nailing boxes in their marked locations, etc. ). During the finishing phase, I installed receptacles, switches, light fixtures, plates, etc ). I never shadowed, or worked around a circuit panel. I was always kept busy, so I wasn’t able to observe, but the other two guys were doing . I was always instructed what to do, but never why to do it. As a result, I never truly understood the fundamentals of electricity. In retrospect, I understand that 2 1/2 years in a field, is a drop in the bucket, relative to what it takes, to master your field. That said, my master electrician, was a very insecure, neurotic, little man syndrome guy, who took his job very serious. I genuinely believe, that I was being held back, from my full potential, as a result of him. There’s no telling how many more years, I would have needed to put in, in order to get the proper training. The reason I mentioned my résumé at the beginning, is because I wasn’t some shady, lazy, unintelligent person, that teaching efforts, would’ve been wasted on. I received none of what you’ve taught, just in this video alone, in my 2 1/2 years, in the field. Anyways, this is all to say THANK YOU, for all the effort and everything you do, in order to share your knowledge and insight. 🙏🙏🙏

I've had trouble understanding electricity and basic wiring and he didn't over explain or used every electricity term available to make himself seem more intelligent. He explained simply and I loved the mixed media diagrams as opposed to a schematic that makes the teacher feel good about himself but leaves the students confused! thank you!!

I am a chemist and I have a master's degree in teaching. I absolutely love teaching, especially teaching chemistry, but I refuse to teach as a job because the education system in this country is messed up. Student teaching was the best as I was able to engage the students and help them understand the material and how it relates to the real world without writing stupid reports to the state and dealing with the political nonsense.

I was fortunate to have a father-in-law that showed me how to do electrical work. 5 years ago I bought a lake house that was very old and when I looked at the place the first time and being a volunteer firefighter I was surprise the place never burned to the ground. The previous owner had junctions boxes everywhere and most were not grounded or covered. I ended up gutting the place. I removed all the wiring and had the electric panel and service updated by an electrician. I just wasn't comfortable with that phase. I did run all the circuits for the outlets and lights. But I have to tell you that the three way switch still confuses me and also t bought a light switch that controls two things, in my case bathroom light and exhaust fan. That took me some time to figure out as well. Enjoyed your video and found it refreshing. I am still working on the lake house finishing the basement and adding a 2nd bathroom. It is amazing how much you can do on your own if you just put your mind to it. Thanks again....

Dude! I had to drop you a line. My sob story goes like this. I was diagnosed with ms had to quit work (oil field management for 25 yrs) had to sell my house and my in-laws gifted their rental property to us that was built in 1911. I do not have a construction background and I have always paid other people to do things. But now with the disability I have limited funds and diy is my jam. You’re video helped me so much! Electrical apprentice here. Great job. Only change I'd make would be to have the hots & neutrals wirenutted & pigtailed instead of having the second outlet attached to the first outlet. Having all the wires attached to the first outlet is another point of failure vs wirenutting them.

Or it can be argued that wire nutting pigtails results in two possible points of failure vs one. Old timers will argue that letting the outlet or switch be part of the circuit is bad because if the fixture fails it will be hard to find. But really in my 35 years of owning homes, never has a an outlet failed.

I'm a computer technician by trade. I wouldn't need to wire a house but it is so important to understand how wiring works because fans and power units are in computers. Although they have a small connector attached to the end, it is really beneficial to know how those wires connect to each other and why. This was great for visual learners. I had a hard time with learning basic wiring and electricity in school, and now that I’m 21 and looking into trade school, becoming an electrician has become a real possibility for me. This video was incredibly informative and comprehensive to someone who feels like they know less than nothing, so I really really appreciate it!! Thank you so much

I can almost guarantee you won't regret going to trade school to learn electrical. Even though that is not something I did, quite a few years back when I was that young, I did have the very good fortune of my best friend's father being an electrician. He allowed me to watch him, ask questions, and learn (many years before this great tool we call KZbin). As a result, over the years since then I have done a great deal of electrical work with what I learned from him. He passed away in 2015 and I am so grateful to have had such a man as a mentor!

Wow! This was explained so well. I have been rewiring a mobile home that has crappy electrical box/switch combos. I was having a difficult time but you explained it all so well. Your video was about the 10th one I watched and I wish I had seen it first. Thank you for taking the time to do this, I would still be searching if I hadn’t found it! Awesome! 👍🏻
