I reused the door and used a retro fit pocket door handle. I used a kit for the pocket door frame and slides. For the price, you may as well use the kit. They have everything you need and work pretty well. Some kits come in adjustable sizes, mine was made for the size of my door.Since I reused the door, I had to install a retrofit pocket door handle. This door has a lock on it that was installed backwards. I have a young child that we want to keep out of there, so this worked out well.

Installed a pocket door a few years back - they’re great! After a few weeks, my spouse complained it wasn’t working...right after they hung art on the wall next to the doorway. Turns out they nailed through the drywall and into the opened door locking it into place. 😂

Neither of us had a lot of experience with pocket doors so it never occurred to them. I was so focused on trying to get a good grip that little flip handle, I hadn’t even noticed the newly hung artwork and it never occurred to me “decor” could disable a door like that! We had a good laugh about it.

I pulled out the bumper and put in several squares of medium density foam used for ac insulation. Top to bottom. Softens the hit when opening the door. Useful if you have kids. Also made a t shaped guide for the bottom of the door as a center guide. Routed a notch into the bottom center of the door for the t glide notch into. No waver back and forth when opening and closing and illuminates the need for external guides that will mess up your paint.

Your vid helped alot. I changed two things. I made a guide and cut a notch in the bottom of the door to keep it from seating side to side. I also removed the hard rubber bumper and put 3/4inch foam from top to bottom as a stopper. The door does not slam into the frame and the guide kees my paint looking good. Even the kids can't mess it up.

I would love to do this for my downstairs living room! My boyfriend and I are trying to make a gamer hang out room but make it futuristic like, so sliding pocket door is a great idea! I have a question though, I am new to all these remodels etc and was curious if anyone knows if you need to first obtain a permit to do this type of project or if you could just do it without obtaining one? I know usually you need permits for stuff that involves doing remodeling or renovations that might involve moving electrical or plumbing sorts but was just curious any help is appreciated! great video and thank you!
@BrentDarlington

It will depend on the building department in your city. Where I love, as long as it's not a load bearing wall, you can do it without a permit. If you don't know if it's a load bearing wall, you may need to speak to a structural engineer or call the city building department and ask them what they would recommend.

The way you just can rip out studs, it is a testament to how flimsy the houses in the US are made.

You will need a door system made for exterior and I'm not sure one exists that isn't just a patio door made of glass

How does latch work? Norm pocket door latch has a hook that you can use to get door out of pocket

Awesome video. What size door and pocket door frame you used? I want to do the same to my pantry door. One question I have is, my door opening is 24”, should I go with a 24” pocket door frame or can I go a bit longer like a 28” pocket door frame. It’s hard to find a 24” anywhere in stock. Plus with the 28” pocket door frame I can slide the entire door into the frame, making it easier for reaching in and out the pantry. *Will Subscribe soon as I get a response Thx 🙏🏻

That one is a 32". That's building code here for laundry rooms. If you have enough room in the wall to fit a 28" then bigger is usually better. Yes, 24" would be tough to find since they aren't common but should be able to order one or get a pocket door kit that is adjustable to the size you need. You can also just get the hardware and frame the walls in with some 1x3" or steel stud.

Nice job Brent, ... I have to quote the exact project, (no electrical) curious, how many days do you think you spent on this project from demo to finish trim & paint? Thanks'
@BrentDarlington
@BrentDarlington Жыл бұрын
Probably 3 or 4 days with dry times for drywall coats and paint. First day is busy but after that a lot of waiting. Hopefully I have another job close by. Hit it in the morning for a few day. I usually do bigger jobs and this would just be part of it.

On the end why didn’t you use a latch lock like those used on patio sliding doors?

Awesome video! Did you use the old door jamb or was this a diy kit you can buy with everything you’ll need? What if the doorway and the jamb are load bearing?
@BrentDarlington
@BrentDarlington Жыл бұрын
I used a kit for the jambs. If it's load bearing, call a structural engineer or do a barn door style sliding door.

How do you correct a pocket door that is not level? I have 2 that I have to tape open to keep them open.
@BrentDarlington
@BrentDarlington 4 жыл бұрын
Pretty tough to fix a pocket door that is out of level. I would tighten up the guides at the bottom of the door so there is a bit of resistance. The door won't slide as easily but hopefully will keep it open.
